I read somewhere a long time ago that Sir Bernard Burke, Ulster King at Arms & founder of Burke's Peerage etc traced his ancestry back to the De Burgos, Earls of Clanricarde through the Burkes of Meelick. Unfortunately I have been unable to find either the book or article I read or Sir Bernard's tracing of his ancestry. Can anybody help me please? Thank you very much for your help, now and in the past. Brendan Burke, Dublin. P.S. I' m posting this on both the Galway & Clare lists as Meelick is on the border between the two counties.

This website might be of interest as it has at least one Irish database: http://www.movinghere.org.uk/ One of the databases is (PRO) T91/180 Irish Reproductive Loan Records for Limerick Co. 1848-1854. Free access to original images! I don't belong to Limerick list so maybe someone would post it there as well. Just figure with the closeness of Clare and Limerick, there might be something of interest to those in Clare as well. BTW, I initially found this on the PRO website but the links to images I was interested in were messed up so had to go to "Moving Here's" website to access them. Cheers Aggi-Rose

I am researching my family from Garlic Hill Crusheen, they are buried in the Kilawinna Graveyard at Crusheen.Does any body know if there has been any list done on the graves there? My family are the Butlers, William & Mary Ellen Butler(Hehir from Carrowkeel Beg) their children William, Arthur and Emily. Also Michael & Emily Butler(Mahon from Northampton Co Galway).I would love to know any information on their headstones especially dates. My grandmother was Kathleen Butler d/o William & Mary-Ellen she came out to Australia in the 1920's but died in 1942(40yrs).I cannot find out any information of when she came out here, all I know is that she came out to be a housekeeper for her uncle Rev Michael Hehir in Melbourne. I would appreciate any information, Vickie Mulholland,Sydney Australia.

Although I have not begun an all-out effort on researching Roughan, I do believe that Ronan is a spelling which Roughan researchers should consider a variation. Now as I run through online materials, I will be mindful to collect and post something by someone with real credentials in Irish surnames, such as Maurice Lenihan (1800s, wrote a history of Limerick) of our own Clare region. A few years ago by request, I posted the dozens of spelling variations found while doing Carberry research, with many of the odd ones being verified through records as actually Carberry. I am now trying to determine why so many families, particularly on the Eastern seaboard of the U.S., apparently chose (rather than being mistaken by recordtakers) to be known as Coby or Corboy and then much later changed to the usual Carberry spelling. I suspect that it is because there was a Gerberich family who settled Pennsylvania in the 1700s, a line of which was using Carberry as of the early 1800s. The new settlers of the mid-1800s may have chosen a distinctly different spelling in order to maintain their own cultural identity. Back in Clare, it is known that the Minogue and Mannix are interchangeable, for some reason significant within that family and not of general relevance to Irish surnames overall. The government does not have a bill in congress called 901B (or whatever they named it this week) that if passed will enable them to charge us 5 cents for every sent e-mail. There will be NO cool dancing, singing, waving, colorful flower, character, or program I will receive immediately after I forward this. People are just trying to talk me into doing it to make me look like a fool. The American Red Cross will not donate 50 cents to a certain individual dying of some never heard of before disease for every email address I send this to. The American Red Cross RECEIVES donations, they don't donate! And finally, I WILL NOT let others guilt me into sending things on to my friends for fear they will think I am not their friend...or by telling me I have no conscious or don't believe in Jesus Christ. If God wants to send me a message, I believe the bushes in my yard will burn before he picks up a PC to pass it along...but even if it does come by e-mail, HE will send me one at which point I'm SURE I will know it will be from HIM. AND if he does, I'm sure he will care enough to delete all those annoying forwarded '<<<<<<<<' in it!" Now, repeat this 4 times to yourself until you've memorized it and then send it along to at least 5 of your friends before the next full moon or you will be eaten by a werewolf!*

Ruth, I have to smile because you had a distinct gem in that info. Unless my memory disserves me, the Roughans have been operating a hardware store in Ennis for many, many years. I think the Clare library website has a photo of the storefront, in the usual traditional style. Neat ! Thanks so much for sharing that. He was a builder/carpenter and among other things built a church and a school. He had a brother who owned a hardware store. This information came from Patrick's son Thomas Patrick Ronan, who we came to know about 5 years ago. Tom lived in New York but had retired to West Chester, Pa. He covered politics and government for the NY Times and lived in London for 9 yrs. as a foreign correspondent for the Times.
