    1. [IRL-CLARE] Gort Workhouse Records
    2. My Kerrigan ancestors lived in Kilkeedy parish, Co. Clare, at the time of Griffith's. I know they came from Kilmacduagh but can't pin them down to a townland, wonder if they were dispossessed at the time of the Famine. The Gort Poor Law Union included Kilkeedy and Kilmacduagh parishes, as well as several others in that corner of Co. Galway. Has anyone on this list looked for their ancestors in the Gort workhouse records, which are held in the Galway County Library Headquarters in Galway City? I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile hiring a researcher or an exercise in futility. Diane

    3. I realize that, but no reason we can't add more. We aren't trying to compete with Clare library. We have a Headstone section for every county in Ireland. Some have more than others. :) Christina > Christina, > > While I welcome your request for photo's I think it should be > pointed out the Clare has the largest collection of Graveyard > records along with photo's on line on the Library Site. > http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/graves/ind > ex_graves.htm > Any addition to your site or request is always welcome. > Regards, > Larry. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Christina Finn Hunt" <[email protected]> > To: "irl-clare" <[email protected]> > Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2011 1:10 PM > Subject: [IRL-CLARE] Gravestone photos wanted! >> If anyone has gravestone photos to share, please drop me a line. >> Clare is really in need of more photos in the IGP Archives. >> >> Clare: >> http://www.igp- >> web.com/IGPArchives/ire/clare/photos/tombstones/markers.htm >> >> If you have any photos from a cemetery in Clare, please email me >> Off List. >> >> [email protected] >> Thanks, >> Christina

    3. Brian, I may be stating the obvious, but have you searched for any submitted trees at places like Rootsweb, Ancestry or Genes ReUnited ? With descendants in USA and Australia and possibly others who stayed in Ireland, there would seem to be a big chance that a variety of people are looking for a common ancestor. I would also suggest you try Googling selected names using quotation marks. That should cover most online possibilities. Peter

    3. I am seeking information on the extended family and ancestors of William Moylan who married Mary Littleton in Quin, County Clare prior to 1840. I have information of three of their children - 1. Ann - b. 13 March 1836 who migrated to the USA 2. Mary and Bridget (born early 1840's with Mary being the elder) - they both migrated at the same time to Australia in 1855 -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. 1. [IRL-CLARE] carmody answers etc.
    2. Lewis Pat
    3. #1 NOT all the info is on Castle garden records, as you say,nor is it all on Ellis Island with the many people that came thru, and IF it is there the names are NOT always there due to the fact the people doing records didn't always know how to spell or understand the name told, because of language barriers even back then, so names were very often spelled as they sounded to the recorder at the time. I know of one family who became Felts, because the man made hats...recorder couldn't understand the broken English spoken by a name named Frarracio...so asked his occupation and put that down as name as the man made hats of felt material. And many records have been lost or unreadable, therefore not posted. #2 IF I had a Mother or someone in Mother's family to ask about the Carmody name I certainly would have asked them #3 Also IF I knew the last name of Johanna,my"supposed" great grandmother, my great grandfathers wife, both supposedly born in Cork, I would have checked that, in nearby areas and counties. I say "supposed" as she may have been a 2nd wife, on grandfathers death certificate, it is stated his Mother's name Mary...and known last name. IF my Father had had siblings I would have asked them if they could be found, but alas, he was their only living child. I have written, sent donations to churches and received no answers or answers saying no family by the name in that parish. Maybe a fresh eye that sees and knows all,and understands all the info, could do this, that paid researchers and I haven't been able to do There are NOT always answers found at all, much less easily. I hope some of the suggestions given are useful to those who haven't used those sources.

    2. Judie, I don't know what the #1 refers to. There's only one Limerick PLU, and it includes the southeast corner of Clare and northeast corner of Limerick. On the seanruad site you can just type in Limerick by PLU and it will give you all the civil parishes. Diane

    2. Athlunkard townland is in St. Patrick's civil parish (Parteen and Meelick RC parishes), which is part of Limerick registration district (PLU). (Use the seanruad.com site to see what parishes, PLUs, etc., various townlands are in.) groireland.ie describes the information on the various registration forms. You could compare that to what the IFHF provides. A photocopy is always better than a transcription (and often includes more info). Diane

Castlegarden preceded Ellis Island and there is a free search site at http://www.castlegarden.org/ Also there are many, many ships lists at http://www.immigrantships.net/ Best of Luck Bernice Hassett -----Original Message----- From: Lewis Pat Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2011 11:22 AM To: CLARE IRL IRL Subject: [IRL-CLARE] Diane & Nancy-your message re;Carmody #1. My Grandfather did not come thru Ellis Island as it hadn't been built yet, he came in 1888-9,possibly on the Celtici. SO there are no records of him on Ellis Isle search. There are many JOHN Carmody's on Ancestry....none matching any info to "my" Carmody in more than 10 years of checking that site. #2-The best info came from his military records, and the fact he put down Liscarroll, Cork as to who to contact in emergency, on 1895=1901 military records, did NOT give any info as to his family, tho his Father "may"have been born in that town....his parents had moved to Middlesex England before 1861. Checking church records there in Liscarrol area have yielded nothing as the churches claim no such family in area. Grandfather told my Father very little of life as he knew it..very secretive...and died long before I was born in order to ask any questions....and I had little contact with Father past age of 6. There are NO living "direct relatives with any info....and after more than 40 years of searching I think I can give it up....unless a miracle happens! And there were no documentations, papers etc. to be found when Father died, back in 1966. What I was saying in message that there are problems doing research and sometimes a very un-penatrable brick wall! And sometimes people do not read all of the message. Only for the fact that I decided to check the British census (because of the famines) starting in 1851 on to 1911, did I find where the family moved to in England from Cork...and who was in family and what happened to them, occupations, deaths etc, and a English friends help copying and sending on copies to me, would I have ever found as much, to this day. They were extremely secretive as to passing on info, including not registering births, as many Irish neglected to do back then in England and Ireland. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Diane. You are so right and you just prompted me to go in and check a nearby county for a family I have been searching for years to find. I *think* I found my husband's ancestor in County Longford last week. Have been trying to sort him out for a long time. Using the new advanced search in some counties on the IFHF site, I put in surname combinations I thought had relatioships. I finally narrowed down to a good choice. Put in the first name and up he popped. This is a for a couple that married after Civil Registration but never registered the marriage. Arrrgh. Anyway, I only found the one child for this couple, which seemed odd. Seeing your story of finding a record in a different county, I checked Westmeath. Found another child so I looked for the marriage. It was there. And it said the husband was from Brideswell. I checked that location and it is in Roscommon. These counties all touch in the Southern corner of Longford. So a big thank you for your nudge. Now I have them in three counties. :) Ancestors did find marriage partners in other parishes and even other counties. You can see Clare on map: http://www.rootsireland.ie/ifhf/map.php Counties with Advances Search enabled. http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=advancedsearch Christina PS Clare is not in the IFHF site. > I couldn't find the marriages of two of my four pairs of > greatgrandparents in the parishes where they raised their families. > Turned out the brides came from neighboring parishes, which were > also in different counties from the grooms'. 3. Dear Listers, I am trying to trace McGrath in Co Clare. I am sorry I don't have much info, but the story is that some time between 1850 and 1880 two brothers George and John McGrath emigrated and finished up in Jamaica one of them had a son called Archibald who married a Spanish girl and had a son called John Presley McGrath who now lives in Wolverhampton. Can anyone tell me was it possible to go direct from Co Clare to Jamaica or would they have to go to the USA or Canada first? Is there a website for the tythes or an early census I could look up? Thanks in advance. Talk to you soon, Bill ______________________________________________ This email has been scanned by Netintelligence http://www.netintelligence.com/email
