    1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] Ennis the city and Leader the family
    2. In a message dated 3/8/2011 11:56:12 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: As to the Leader family, in writing to names I had in family via the Irish phone book, I tried to find a Mulcahy family in Cork, in the Kanturk area, the letter passed thru from one family member to another before I finally received an answer about 2-3 years later from a Dr. Leader in Boherbue. He had just retired, and his son has taken over the practice.Dr leader was a help to me by getting the priest to find my grandmothers baptismal certificate info and copy, when previously told not available but was able to get her siblings. I had 2 enjoyable visits with Dr Leader as he showed me around Boherbue and Kanturk where my Mulcahy family had lived back in 1850-80 time period. he said his Mother was probably a cousin to my Mulcahy grandmother, which made me feel even more welcome and enjoy the trip. I found your posting very interesting. Dr. Leonard Leader was a not too distant cousin to me (how else could I get a name like Leonard!!). It's a name that runs in the Keale, Millstreet branch of LEADERs, but the most common given names are John and Henry, after the original two brothers of that name who settled in Cork about 1660. I also spent several days some years ago with him and his wife, who was an O'Callaghan, and two of his daughters who were both studying to be doctors. I never met his other children who were away at school. His father was also Leonard, of Duarigle and Lisheershane, married 20 June 1916 (Boherbue R.C.) Ellen, dau. of Daniel Mulcahy and his wife, Mary O'Keeffe of Boherbue. They had a family of seven and Dr. Leader had six. I have a Mulcahy gr-grandmother, but from the east Cork branch of that family. This may be a bit off-topic for a Clare site, but as the Clare LEADERs no doubt are an offshot of the original Cork line, maybe this will help some researchers. Len Keane (OCathain)

    1. [IRL-CLARE] Ennis the city and Leader the family
    2. Lewis Pat
    3. My family ancestors supposedly originated in Clare. The CARMODY family.Whereabouts is unknown after 40 years of searching still. I finally made it to Clare in May 2002, and was able to take a couple of pictures of Carmody St. A main road as you come into the city of Ennis, just to prove I had made it finally after years of dreaming about making a trip to Ireland. I had heard that there was a Carmody bar/pub there and wanted to stop but unfortunatly it was taken over by another business by the time of my visit, and lost my chance. I will continue looking for a connection tho I keep hitting brick wasll as my Carmody;s moved to Cork,, Kilbrin area, then to England for work in late 1850's due to the famine. And, unfortunatly, I didn't get to spend much time there as the city was crowded, lots of traffic and little parking. I had to go to Kilrush to find a place to stay over night. The weather turned cold over night and very foggy so little to see there except the sea, I never did find a Carmody family there either tho I had been told many lived in the area. Maybe someday I will be able to do the trip again. As to the Leader family, in writing to names I had in family via the Irish phone book, I tried to find a Mulcahy family in Cork, in the Kanturk area, the letter passed thru from one family member to another before I finally received an answer about 2-3 years later from a Dr. On my 2nd tri[ over, I called to find Dr Leader not in good health and was unable to see him and found out he died not long after, but I wil not forget his kindness to me and the visiting the area. Many Leaders all over this area, so good luck finding a match to those looking..try putting the name in google with Kanturk Cork you may find a lot of info going back to the 1600s. The only Carmody I found turned out to be a Carmody,, police Gardai, near Kanturk, ( he was from Kerry) when I went to the police station and left a message that I had hoped would get me some family info but alas, we could not make a match. I did enjoy both my visits with him and his wife on both visits and figure somewhere along the line we are lpng distance cousins. Good luck to you all!

They can vary from a single acre to several hundreds, but some are merely open fields. Unless you know there are records kept there I think you will be disappointed. But if that is where your family lived, you may well find relatives in the area or someone who knows something about your relatives. 3. Thank you for the suggestions so far - please keep them coming. I am struggling with the geography and social history of the area, so welcome and value any comments about the place and times. Len has pointed out that the LEADER name is not basically from Co. Clare, and this is borne out by a comment in "Irish Names and Surnames" - WOULFE 1923 who says it is "A late English surname in County Cork". Ancestry's index of Griffith's Valuation lists the name over 600 times, but this includes multiple entries where one person had more than one allotment, and also both Lessors and Lessees ( and there were a few in the latter category). My quick count showed only 4 LEADER's in county Clare, and 2 in Limerick, with the rest in Cork. There were only two occurrences in the Index of Irish Wills (James in Upper Sunville in 1792 and Thomas in Limerick). The 1788 "General Directory of the Kingdom of Ireland" showed John LEADER as a grocer in Ennis, but I could find no mentions in the 1824, 1846 or 1856 directories for Ennis. I had expected to find at least Ellen I had assumed that the LEADEN name was a mis-transcription for LEADER, as it looks that way in Griffiths, but the Baptismal entry is more worrying. I have not seen any parish registers, as I understood that they were only available on microfilm at NLI, and then only from March 1841 for Baptisms and April 1847 for Marriages, so I will need to explore that further, thank you. The Shipping Registers for SA are incomplete, but I do have the one for the "Escort" . Sailing on the Escort from Clare under Remittance Orders, there was one married couple, (both Farm Labourers), 20 Single females ( 1 Dairy Maid, 16 Domestic Servants and 3 Farm Servants) and 21 single males (2 farm servants, 2 Labourers, and 17 farm labourers). I have often wondered whether they were actually from one or more Workhouses, but have not been able to find any information. The only formal programme I have found finished a few years before Catherine was involved. Thank you again, and please keep the suggestions and ideas coming. Robert SLATER South Australia

    2. It's in Dublin. I think the best resource is the Clare County Library on-line site. It's tremendous. Len In a message dated 3/8/2011 8:19:55 P.M. 3. In Dublin, across the country, I'd say at least a 4 hour drive? (distance is not always a good indicator of time spent getting there - at least in Ireland). 2. Follow the link below to the Irish Times Web site, convert the civil parishes to RC parishes, then click on the individual parishes to see the status of the records: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/index.htm Diane

    3.   >>>I was thinking you could get all the  church records surviving in Clare from the County Library on-line<<<  How could I get to this area of the site??   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >>>NLI or know exactly what you want is there.<<<  I have a date after 1864 for one person's birth.  I have the d date for a sibling -- 10 July 1899 at 29 years.  I have the 1864 b date, but not in front of me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I do not have dates for others.  If I have a date for say a son, then maybe I could find more information to look further.   I know that I can go online and download a form to obtain a cert from Dublin.  I forget the name of that site.  I have looked at that site.   If I could go online and do research, it would be easier and cheaper also. Thanks for all the help.   Alanna --- On Tue, 3/8/11, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote:   As there are no vital records of b, m, or d prior to 1864 except for  Protestant marriages only from 1845, I was thinking you could get all the  church records surviving in Clare from the County Library on-line, unless  you are very well-versed in the workings of the NLI or know exactly what you  want is there.
