    1. [IRL-CLARE] Census Search Forms 1841 & 1851-Alternative Source Pension
    2. Larry Brennan
    3. Clare Library Site has a little gem on their site which should be checked as an alternative source for information on Clare Family research: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/census_search_forms/index.htm When the Old Age Pension was introduced in Ireland in 1908, people had to prove they were over 70 years of age in order to qualify. As Civil Registration did not begin until 1864, birth certificates were not available for those born before that date. The government, therefore, found it necessary to establish a person's age by allowing the census returns of 1841 and 1851 to be searched. (The original forms were subsequently destroyed in 1922, during the Civil War.) Applicants provided the information by letter, and where there were sufficient details, a search was carried out. When the family was found, and the applicant identified as a child of the family, a certified copy of the return was provided on payment of two shillings. The information in the Census Search Forms, or 'Green Forms' - the internal office records of the search made - is given here. Two points of access are provided to the information: by the applicant's surname, and (where given) by the applicant's mother's maiden name.

    3. Hi Anne, On her death cert it states she died would you believe on Boxing Day 1894 aged 54 yrs.I'm pretty sure she arrived into Vic .She married Patrick McMahon at St Killians Sandhurst 1861.If she was 54 in 1894 that would give her a birth yr of 1840.Her death cert also states she had been in Vic 33 yrs, which makes her arriving 1861 -the same yr she was married. 3. Hi Rae, Do you have approximate dates? Do you know what year Annie arrived in Aust and into which state? Did she marry? There is a John O'Donnell, 64 years, occ cooper, living with his wife Eliza, 64y, in house 46 Main St, Miltown Malbay, Co Clare (1911 Census). This would put their birth years as c1847. They had been married for 38 years (marr c 1873) and had 2 children, both of whom were living. In the 1901 Census, John, 54y, and Eliza, 50y, reside in house 33, Main St, Mmiltown Malbay. He was a cooper and Eliza was a housekeeper. Living with them was their niece, Mary Kate O'Donnell, 17y, a Post Office official. I cannot find her anywhere in the 1911 census, so she probably married or emigrated. Could these be your family? 3. All the work of John Mayer, he has done a great job... yet another great database on Clare Library. Thanks, Liz... glad you found some Harens... there are even some of my Dillons... Within the next couple of months, the Clare Roots Society volunteers transcriptions of around 18,000 Memorial Cards will be on line, free of charge to all, via Clare Library. I am loving the discoveries we are coming across with these.. a memorial card for President John F. Kennedy to name but one. Lots of sad notes, but I see all of these as a celebration of lives, a great memorial to those who have passed. It's also going to be a great database, the likes of which we haven't had before, as it includes details we normally wouldn't find in one area. 3. Would anyone on the list be able to provide me with any information or assistance in regard to the following family. MICHAEL O'GRADY married BRIDGET O'DEA. Their known children were: 1833 Margaret (baptised 4 July 1833; sponsers Michael Meehan & Bridget Neylan) 1835 Ellen 1836 Michael 1841 Ellen There may also have been a son, Daniel, born about 1835. The parish records show MICHAEL O'GRADY (senior) as living at Garrynagry. The Tithe Appoltment & Griffiths Valuation records show RICHARD O'GRADY at Garrynagry and so I believe that Michael may have been his son or younger brother living with him. The Tithe Applotment (1826) also shows a property in Cahermore under the joint names of MICHAEL O'GRADY and JAMES O'DEA. This would possibly be Michael and a relation of his wife (BRIDGET O'DEA) There is no mention of Michael (senior or junior) in the 1855 Griffiths Valuation the father may have died by that time. His sons Michael and Daniel may have left for Australia by that date. I would love to hear from anyone with any information about, or interest in, this family. Tony O'Grady Melbourne Australia.

    3. Hi Brian, There were 2 O'Donnell brothers - Pat A, aged 50 years, and Francis, aged 47 years, both single, RC, both retired shopkeepers residing together in High St, Corofin, Clare in the 1901 census. In the 1911 census, they are also together in house 16 in Corofin Town - Patrick, 65y, and Francis, 58y, both single, Rc, with Patrick listed as a retired grocer. Both census forms list them as brothers. Their birth years would be Patrick c 1846/1851 and Francis c 1853/1854, which would fit nicely with Jeremiah's birth year of 1852. Corofin is about 25 to 30 kims from Liscannor, depending on which route you take. Could this be them? 2. Brian G Smith
    3. I am seeking any information on Nora Fitzgerald (born c. 1774) who married John Hannan (Nil details). They had 2 children that I know of - Sarah (b. c 1810/11); Thomas (b. c. 1822) There may have been an earlier son - (Michael (b. c. 1809) but I have no evidence if this. The family may have been from County Limerick rather than C. Clare but unsure on this point. Norah Hannan and her children Sarah and Thomas travelled with Mr and Mrs Thomas Fitzgerald and their seven children plus Mr and Mrs Michael Enright and their three children on board the barque "George" from Liverpool and arrived in Tasmania on 7 November 1842. Norah was shown as a widow (so it seems clear that her husband John died in Ireland approx between 1822 and 1842) . Norah whose maiden name was Fitzgerald was may have been Thomas Fitzgerald's sister. Their religion was Roman Catholic. Any assistance in tracing their origins in Ireland would be appreciated. 3. I am looking for information or leads on the following two families from Clonloghan/Drumline. !. LAURENCE McINERNYand HANNAH McNAMARA from Tullyvaragga. Laurence appears on the 1830 Tithe Applotment records. Their daughter, Hannah, was born about 1815 and married MICHAEL MCMAHON at Newmarket on Fergus on 5 March 1832 (witnesses Silvester McNamara and Mrs. Hogan). Hannah and her siblings ,Bartholomew, Mary, Patrick, Martin and Matthew all later migrated to Australia ' 2. MATHEW & MARGARET McMAHON lived in the same area - possibly even in Tullyvaragga. Their son MICHAEL was born about 1811 and married HANNAH McINNERNY in 1815 (see above) 3. MICHAEL McMAHON married HANNAH McINNERNY (see details above) They had seven children (Honora, James, Mathew ,Margaret, Laurence, Bridget and Patrick ) before they migrated to Australia in 1851. I have only found Newmarket-on-Fergus baptism records for two of their children - Honora (20 April 1833) and Margaret Mary (13 March 1842) I hope that someone on the list might be able to give me some assistance with this search. I have no other information on them other than the fact that Mary (Liddy) Reidy did come to live in Elmira and is buried in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. I have no LIDDY or SHEEDY information.
