Pat, For better results, you need to include some known dates in your postings if you want people to be able to help. We are wasting our time looking in Clare records if the family were known to be in Cork or Middlesex at a particular time. Try looking at the Clare library site. They have a number of directories that may assist be they are date specific. Peter

Peter, could I have the URL for that Clare library site? I want to be sure I'm looking at the one you're referring to. The same people used different spellings. My grandfather used the Scanlan spelling, but at that time people changed the family spelling to Scanlon. I cannot read my father's bc because the writing is strange to say the least. But it looks as if that even if his father was Scanlan, he was id as Scanlon. Thanks to "TLiewer", who did find "some" info, on my Carmody family in Middlesex, Eng. She may have found the exact birth records of Patrick and John Carmody sons of my great grandparents Denis and Johanna Carmody, both born in Cork. I am presently sending for the certificates. At last "may" have the maiden name of great grandmother. I can hardly contain myself over this "new" info! Most exciting info found since 2002! Part of a chunk of brick wall coming down. Of course my main goal over the years has been to find out just whee in Clare the Carmody families live in Clare, before moving to Cork. Altho in Griffiths and tithe list the names are found there seems to be a large gap in info as to who else was in the family, wives, children, etc. of the men who worked the land, and not owned it. Guess it is and will remain a complete mystery of sorts for many of us . I suspect my Carmody family lived in any of these areas, Tulla, Six Mile bridge,Kilkee, Kilrush, Ennis. Does anyone know how the main road coming into Ennis, Clare from Shannon airport, got it's name??? Where could I find that info, would the library have it? I did manage to get a picture of the sign by itself and one with me standing under it for posterity...on my trip to Ennis. Unfortunatly, I got ill while in Ennis and had to go back to hotel in Cork to rest. While in Cork, tho, did find a Sgt. Carmody working for Millstreet Gardia, he and his family came from Kerry, and we could find no match. Any info appreciated, thank you!
Mary, The site is www.irelandxo.org not .com Peter
Not sure why this appears on Clare list. It looks like Cork. There was hardly a single Carmody entry for Cork pre 1864 on the new Family Search site. So I'd recommend you follow Theresa's advice and order a birth certificate of one of the children from GRO. Alternatively, if you have an Ancestry subscription or can get access through a local FH centre, have a look for London births which they have online. Peter
Just tried your .org and it came up, same site as .com !!! An FYI re: the initiation of a project sponsored by the Irish government. It will start with Galway and progress to other counties. Ireland Reaching Out The Ireland Reaching Out (IRO or Ireland XO) Project is an Irish government sponsored initiative established to connect people of Irish heritage abroad with the Irish parish communities from where their ancestors emigrated in Ireland. The national pilot project is being organized within 46 parishes in the South-East Galway region and aims to enable geographical parish communities as they are today to expand to become globally connected online virtual communities. In June of this year, the parish community of South-East Galway will be part of a Week of Welcomes festival. Activities will include visits to ancestral townlands, talks on local history and tours/leisure activities in the local South East Galway area. Please visit the website www.irelandxo.com<http://www.irelandxo.com> to view the brochure
Yes. Mary Ellen, I also received the notification - it was from the Galway site. I have been fortunate (through this wonderful Clare site) to locate many of my relations still in Ireland....it is those of us spread all around the world who are linking up with descendants of our ancestors....knowing someone for many years but not being aware that they are a second cousin! Surprise! Surprise! I know that this subject has closed but I am a few days late in catching up with my emails so hope that the Admin will allow it through . On the other issue of Parish priests - I worked for many years in a Parish and we would supply information upon request - I would do this outside work hours in my own time - sometimes we would receive a donation - most times nothing. I didn't mind doing this until we received a request from someone who wanted copies of all baptisms, marriages and deaths in the records which related to their family. These amounted to over 55 pages and I wrote a short note to the person concerned asking if they would mind sending a large envelope with a certain amount on it to cover the postage cost. (We were not a very wealthy parish and every cent had to be accounted for). The response I received was quite abusive that I should dare to ask for the postage cost etc.etc.(remember I did not ask for the cost of paper, printing, time etc. nor for a donation to the Parish, just an envelope and postage). Needless to say, the information was never forwarded and from that time on it was decided we would not supply anyone with information. One "bad egg" killed it for everyone else - including those genuine and generous researchers. We were sorry to have to take such a stand. I often seek information from Church and other archives and ensure that I enclose a small donation and, if I do have it, any information or photos etc, that may help them in their record keeping. This is always appreciated. Regards, Kay ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Ellen Chambers" <[email protected]> Subject: [IRL-CLARE] Catholic Sacramental Records in Ireland
I just discovered that Google now has the townlands listed for Ireland. I was able to find Tullaghaboy, where my Haren's originated! Give it a try on Google Maps. Just put in Ennis, Clare, Ireland and then zoom in, you'll see the townlands listed. Pretty neat! Liz
Pat, In researching my Co. Clare MASON family, I found the following record. Have not yet determined if Bridget belongs to my line. MASON, Bridget & CARMODY, John from the Blackhill, Broadford parish records. Children: Mary b.c.1888 m. ? Moloney Winifred b.c.1892 m. ? Burke 1901 Census: PLU: Limerick DED: Fahymore town land: Ballyquin Beg Killokennedy Parish Carmody, John 48 Bridget 42 Mary 11 Bridget 9 Winifred 6 note: don't have the census in front of me, but my notes also show a second Bridget Carmody and a third aged 2 listed as granddaughter. On the same census page is a HICKEY family. Judie Mason Chicago
Everything situation has legal issues to surmount; I'm sure it will work out in the long run. Diane, Anyone researching in Clare or Ireland generally should bookmark that site. As for Clare, it looks like copies are generally held by both National Library of Ireland and Clare Heritage Centre, while some but not all were copied by LDS. Originals are still held locally but having provided copies, priests may be too busy with pastoral work to do lookups. The Clare Heritage Centre says commissioned research only. Has anyone used them? I believe it's quite expensive. Peter in Sydney
Sorry to send this whole message again... the First start of this letter/message should have been " Looking for family.ancestors of my great grandfather, Denis Carmody supposedly born in Cork 1825, I can find no relatives at all in either Cork or Clare.Hoping to find parents or any relative ancestor in cork or Clare since the Carmody's came down from Clare to Cork...In Clare may have been in Kilkee, Likrush, Ennis or Tulla, In cork somewhere close or between Liscarrol and Kilbrin (t:[IRL-CLARE] Carmody's/Clare or Cork To: [email protected], CLARE IRL IRL <[email protected]>, [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]>) The "Father "Denis Carmody* born Cork, 1825, also the Mother Johanna(????maiden name) in 1826, in Cork. No more on Priests as a topic. Thanks Christina List Admin
Your best sources are obviously the English census records and then the civil birth records for England, using the Free BMD indexes. In addition to the 1871 and 1881 census records that you mentioned, I found the family in 1861, again in Harlington, with children Patrick, age 3 born in West Drayton, Middlesex County, and Johanna, age 11 months born in Harlington, Middlesex. The 1871 census has those 2 children as well as John, age 8, and Denis, age 5. Jumping over to _http://www.freebmd.org.uk_ (http://www.freebmd.org.uk) , I found a birth for Patrick Carmady, recorded in the first quarter (March) of 1858 in the district of Uxbridge, Middlesex. West Drayton is part of the district of Uxbridge. I also found the birth of John Cormady, recorded in the third quarter (Sep) of 1862 in the district of Staines, Middlesex. Harlington is part of the district of Staines. The places and the ages are right so I am comfortable that these are your family. When using the index, the key is to check the box for using phonetic spellings. You can use the links in the freebmd website to go the GRO website and order the birth record of John or Patrick. They take credit cards and are very prompt in processing orders - I've gotten one in less than a week mailed to the US - and the cost is 9.25 pounds. The birth record will have their mother's maiden name. I was not able to find any marriage record for a Denis Carmody under any spelling. So it may be that he and Johanna were married in Ireland. Once you have a maiden name, you can narrow your search. If you need some help working through the ordering process for the birth certificate, let me know. Once you have it, the list may be able to help you with the next step. Theresa Liewer Ankeny, Iowa In a message dated 5/17/2011 9:48:17 A.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes:
The truth sometimes hurts a great deal. Like all the pedophiles. My father hated the Catholic church and did Not want my mother to send me to a Catholic school. I can tell you all kinds of things about priests and what they did to my parents. I can say we kids adored Fa McCarthy and that was probably why he was moved away. But this is a family history list and I will go off and do happy things. I tell the truth as I was taught at home and in Catholic school! Whenever I've visited a church in Ireland, I've always been allowed to look at the records, but it helps to be polite. Attending to the spiritual needs of their parishioners is an enormous job for most Irish priests, leaving little time to answer genealogy requests. Catholic bishops decide whether or not their dioceses' films should be made generally available. (They're not public documents.) There are a couple of bishops who have held out. The best way to encourage them to keep holding out is to write nasty things about priests on mailing lists. Diane
