    3. You may be able to get a researcher in Dublin to get these in the National library in Kildare street. You can google 'Geneology research in Dublin' to get results. 1. [IRL-CLARE] Corbetts in Clare and elsewhere / Ejectment books
    2. Gordon Corbett
    3. Hello All I have taken over the running of the Corbett One Name Study and, as my Corbett ancestors were from Miltown Malbay, I am focusing my Irish information gathering on Clare. The family were Catholics, consequently vital records are sparse in the 19th century and the Church was prevented, by law from keeping them, beforehand. These I am gathering up to this period. (Here in England I can go back another 150 years as Catholic records can be found included in the Anglican registers) Civil records seem to be an huge untapped resource and are rarely referred too, let alone used, as has been said. I come across them occasionally and in trawling them do make tiny steps back. The Ejectment Books seem to fall into this category and I expect that they contain a wealth of raw data that would benefit the hundreds of my Corbett researchers, and everyone with ancestors who rented property. I would like to see them made available as scanned images, preferably; even on a pay to view basis, as a facsimile say held at Ennis to be accessed and copied, or as a transcript. I am sure that there would be many transcribers, willing to volunteer. I know that I would. The arrangements I would currently need to make to access these books and spend time going through them are practically insurmountable. So, if some kind soul would like to help me, or suggest a work around, I would be grateful. Gordon Corbett Corbett One Name Study GOONS Reg. 1016

    2. Re: unanswered correspondence Just a reminder, not a correction. When asking a question of any institution, person or archives, you are more likely to get an answer if you include a self addressed , Stamped envelope with your request. It will encourage the person reading your request to send a reply. Irish stamps can easily be obtained from any store that specializes in selling collectibles. On the other hand, I have found the Irish to be especially negligent in answering my letters. But have received some answers when the SASE is included. Worth a try.  Pat D     3. 3. With the messages recently re: Pyne/Pine, and Carmody and my inability to link people of those names to what known info I have I am going to just stay with what I have at present and give up trying to go further back. I "know" there were Carmodys' in and around Kilbrin, to Liscarroll,Cork, between 1820-50s. Lack of cooperation of the RC church, despite calls and letters to the church there has not got me any documentation per se, in two years of asking. Have been able to trace the great grandparents thru Brit. census of 1861-1901, with only Denis Carmody, b Cork,1825, and wife, Johanna Courtney b.1826 Cork. At some point after 1851 they went to Middlesex, England and got married there in Uxbridge, in 1857. Denis and Johanna had Fathers' named Patrick.,Johanna's Mother named Elen. Their children Patrick b. 1858, Johanna b. 1859, John b. 1862, and Denis b. 1864, all in Uxbridge or Harlington, Middlesex. Denis was a agricultural farmer,as I think his father before him, and I am guessing due to famines his family "supposedly' from Clare, moved to Cork for work and then on to England. Their sons Patrick and Denis remained bachelors, Johanna married a John Carter and I have traced her family down to present day. John came to the USA in 1889, joined the US Army in 1895-1901 after working as mason for the years between when he found work. He married a Hanora Mulcahy Sullivan, a widow about 1900. She had 3 Sullivan children, and then had John Carmody in 1902. All I ever knew from family lore was that the Carmody's started out from Clare and made their way to England, from my Father, John who died in 1966.I am the last of the line ( as far as I know) Many different people on the lists, have tried to help in finding , most sending the documentation of census, but no one able to match to a family in Clare, which was possibly Kilrush area. I have checke thru Griffiths, and tax rolls, but hard to make a match when you have no idea which town they came from or settled in while still in Ireland. The above info took 45 years to accumulate. I even tried to find the family thru Denis' in laws, and made a "possible" connection, but cannot match to anything else, yet. With the help of so many people, I was lucky to find what I did with suggestions, and their documents they took the time to find for me. I thank you all. With the last finding of a "possible" link of in law I almost flew over to "dig him up, and see what I could find, but have decided enough is enough. I will have to wait til I meet them face to face someday. But want you all to know I am grateful that so many have helped or tried to over the years, from Australia, England and the USA! Time to pack it in, I think! pat

    3. In researching baptismal Eustace records at St. Senan's Church, it appears that there is a lapse of Eustace baptismal records in the 1830's from about 1833-1839. Yet, I know there were several Eustace births in the St. Senan's area during those years. Is there any explanation other than they just failed to be recorded by the priest/parents? Terry

    3. Dear Nicola Thanks for jumping in and thanks for the information re the dates that the Ejectment Books are up to. As a transcriber for Co Clare also, I agree with Sharon that any database for records for Co Clare or any county in Ireland for that matter are a fantastic asset to the library and thank you for your time. Unfortunately I have no William Lynch's in my line, I have only found Patrick so far with his son John who left Co Clare in 1848. Regards and thanks again. Joan in Oz. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nicola Jennings" > Hi Joan, > I'm jumping in and answering your question to Larry. > Yes - they could be. 3. Hi,   I have somewhat of the same problem. My Tadgh Scanlan might have been one of the first evictees.  According to some information and I received from a now deceased uncle, Tadgh may have come from another area into the Township where the Scanlan's lived for many generations.  Current one do not care about family history!!!!!  According to my father we were not related to the other Scanlan/Scanlon's in the area except by marriage.  That marriage one I have found and will not go further there, no interest for me.   And I have found that my family used both the Scanlan and the Scanlon forms of the name within the family!!!!!   Alanna --- On Sun, 6/19/11, Lewis Pat <[email protected]> wrote:

    3. Hello Peter, thanks for your helpful reply. Yes they did all end up in Victoria, in Eaglehawk near Bendigo. They are all buried in the Eaglehawk cemetery. Thomas and Hanora came via South Australia and my guess is they took advantage of the Assisted Immigration Scheme to South Australia as they stayed there the obligatory four years before coming to Victoria. I haven't yet cracked the arrival details of the others, although not for the effort of trying! One of the problems is that, probably because of illiteracy, they weren't sure of dates, ages etc, eg Patrick gave his age on his marriage certificate; his age at death should therefore be his marriage age plus the years he was married, but it isn't so. Possibly the priest who married him looked at him and guessed his age. This makes it impossible to check the immigration indexes and use age to determine if a particular Patrick McMahon is mine. I have a lot of detail of their descendants in Australia and would love to take my McMahon line back further into Ireland. Thank you for the suggestion of the last one leaving Ireland after the death of the parents, that is something to consider. You asked about the Victorian immigration indexes - I believe the original record of these is at the Public Records Office of Victoria (PROV) in North Melbourne. I find the digitised version on their website a bit annoying as it really needs an Advanced Search option to speed up the sorting process. Thank you again for replying Peter, and for your suggestions. I'll keep digging around and see what turns up. Best wishes, Marg. -----Original Message----- From: Peter R Booth Sent: Sunday, June 19, 2011 11:04 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-CLARE] My McMahon family

    3. Thanks to everyone with explaination of "ejectment books". Seems the missing books are the ones that have the information of John Pyne's ejectment of the land he was to take care of in Clare, near Kilrush. Since my Carmody family supposedly came from Clare to Cork then to Middlesex England, and both Carmody and Pyne were agricultural farmers I was hoping to find a connection to them in Clare area. Seems the only connection I now have documentation of is Pyne's daughter married my great-grandmothers, brother. All I ever knew was the Carmody's had bee in Clare for years before moving on to Cork , leaving the mystery alive!

    3. Hi Joan, I'm jumping in and answering your question to Larry. Yes - they could be. I'm afraid I can't help you with 1848 as I have only reached 1835 in the Ejectment Books. In 1834 Crofton Moore Vandeleur took a case against William Lynch of Kilrush (ground and dwelling house). 3. Marg, After just re-establishing an 85yr old connection to Clare, I was getting quite excited at the possibility of another link. But probably not. At least the names forced me to have a closer look. Your families look to be from Ballycorey in East Clare and mine are from Milltown Malbay in West Clare. I'll also check with my new cousins in Clare. There are a few submitted trees on Ancestry both private and public, but they all seem to hit the brick wall with Michael McMahon and Ann(e) Collins. Perhaps you have an Ancestry subscription, or conversely, one of the submitters are on this list. Nevertheless, their data looks to simply cover all the Australian families which you probably have. I see they settled in Victoria. Is that where you live? I've used the Victorian Immigration Indexes often, but never been able to find the original papers from which they were derived, especially for Assisted Immigrants. Those for NSW have a host of extra detail not on the indexes. And the original shipping lists for NSW have also been digitised. Not so Victoria it seems. You could ask at Victorian State Archives. The reason for that suggestion is that I feel the last child probably didn't leave home until after their parents died. So that might help find their deaths. The new FamilySearch site has Irish Civil records after 1864. But before you get too excited, there's hundreds of deaths for Michael McMahon. So you need to get a specific timeframe. Like UK, these are by Registration District. I'm guessing Ennis would be the registration office for Ballycorey, but others may be able to confirm this. Another thought is the Clare Libary site. There are some hidden gems in their collection hidden under donated data. Oops!!! I see some of it is yours. So you know all about that. Sorry I couldn't be more help. I keep an eye on any follow up posts. Peter in Sydney

    2. Marg Watson
    3. Hello listers, I have rejoined the Clare list after quite a break and would like to list my interests. Five McMahon siblings came to the Australian goldfields from the 1850s: Thomas McMahon born c1833, married Hanora Hartigan at Barefield in 1854. Thomas and Hanora immigrated to Australia shortly after their marriage. Patrick McMahon born c1836. Catherine McMahon born c1837, married John O’Brien at Barefield in 1861. Catherine came to Australia with two children Patrick and Mary, but without John. Presumably he died in Ireland. Mary Anne McMahon born c 1838 Ann McMahon born c1839. These were all children of Michael McMahon and Anne Collins. Whilst I have no definite information on Michael and Anne, I think I may have found him on the Griffiths Valuation at Ballycorey. Putting together all the information I have from the children’s marriage and death certificates, I think the Ballycorey Michael McMahon may be my man, although I am prepared to change my mind on this if I find information to prove me wrong! I would love to make contact with anyone researching this family, or any other McMahon family from Ballycorey to try to unravel my McMahon mystery. Best wishes to all, Marg Watson in wintery Australia.
