I found the posts in my spam box where I also found the original of this post.   I opened one and did NOT touch the link which looked odd, so my computer was half right and half wrong.  Wrong that it is putting the Irl-Clare posts, all, in the spam box.  Yes I have that title in my contact list.  Right in that that post was spam but not because the post was bad, but the link that was not touched by me was bad.   Alanna --- On Tue, 7/26/11, Mary <[email protected]> wrote: From: Mary <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [IRL-CLARE] From list admin To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, July 26, 2011, 4:44 PM My computer would not open it saying it was dangerous....very clever little computer!! 2. Kat inquires: === The area mentioned, Kilmaly Islands, Lands of Upper Gragroe, is also unfamiliar to me. Where is it located? === Kat, Kilmaley civil parish is located from 5 to 10 miles WSW of Ennis town. It is part of Islands barony, which includes 5 civil parishes in this general area of west Co. Clare. "Lands of Upper Gragroe" is more difficult. There aren't any townlands in Kilmaley which resemble Gragroe......... although there is a tiny Cregroe Lough about a mile south of Kilmaley village, apparently in Kilcloher townland. There are two Cragroe townlands in Co. Clare, neither are near Kilmaley civil parish. One is just a couple of miles NE of Tulla town, and the other is 2 or 3 miles NW of Sixmilebridge town. Nothing else on this. I'm still collecting the information on the Lissatunna area for you. Pete .................................................... 3. Too cool, Nicola!!! Thank you ever so much for sending me this record! Where did you locate this information? I know I have never seen it before, so wherever you found it is somewhere I apparently have not yet been to research. The area mentioned, Kilmaly Islands, Lands of Upper Gragroe, is also unfamiliar to me. Where is it located? Based on the year of my great-grandfather's birth, it could very well be him, although he would have been only 15 years old at that time (he was born in 1808). I wonder if it was common practice for a young man of 15 years to rent and farm the land (on his own) during 1823? In any event, I am very grateful to you for finding me another potential lead to explore. Again, I thank you wholeheartedly! :) -Kat-

There are quite a few......but the "starting point" of Newtown, Lissatunna, Ennistymon is giving me trouble. The townland of Lissatunna is about a mile WNW of Ennistymon town.......however, there does not seem to be an area, much less a townland, called Newtown in or around Lissatunna. Even the 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch-scale maps do not show a settlement of Newtown. The nearest of the several Newton townlands in Co. Clare to Lissatunna is over a dozen miles to the NNE. I think I'll wait to see what Anne has to say before I dig a deeper hole [gr]. Pete - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts </HTML> Hi Pete, Never hesitate to jump into one of my conversations with someone else. The way I view it, the more, the merrier! :) As it was explained to me many years ago, Newtown is not a townland in its own right, but is rather a sub-division of the bigger townland of Lissatunna which, in turn, is an area of approximately 221 acres situated in the old Civil Parish of Kilmanaheen and the old Civil Parish of Clooney to form what is known as the ecclesiastical Parish of Ennistymon. On an old Ordnance Survey map, Lissatunna (Newtown) is sited just over 1 mile northwest of the town of Ennistymon. For anyone living in...... or familiar with....... the town of Ennistymon, I believe the route they would need to take to get to Newtown is to cross the road above the Falls, heading (Northwest) out of the town of Ennistymon. Just as a matter of interest (likely more mine than anyone else's! lol), our old Markham homestead remains intact to this day in Newtown. Last I had heard, it was owned by a German family who leases it. If anyone on this IRE-CLARE list lives in the Ennistymon/Newtown area and happens to know the names of the current owners or, better yet, how I could contact them, I would offer my last ovary in return for this information! You see, when my great-grandparents built this house, they added a plaque to one of the stone pillars holding a metal gate, located, I believe, at the rear of the property (difficult to determine front property from rear property in the few photos I have of the house and property). The plaque has our family name on it (Markham) and, written in Gaelic, are the words "I am cold" directly below the Markham name. Since the house and property have been consistently falling into disrepair (again, last I had heard), I would dearly love to have our family plaque back in the family again......here in the USA, since we no longer have family members living in Ireland. By the way, Pete, I'm also from Massachusetts. :) -Kat-

    1. Re: [IRL-CLARE] Looking for John Keane
    2. Peter R Booth
    3. Lorrie, I too have Keane ancestors. But mine were from Wexford. I can tell you they are pretty hard to find with all the spelling variants like Keene, Kane, Cain, Cane, O'Keane. Have you recently tried Civil Registrations from 1864 on the new Family Search site? I'd also look for other Keane births in Clare around that time for possible brothers and sisters. You also need to find his immigration records at Ellis Island and see if any other family were on the same ship. That might provide more clues. I'd also look at his marriage and death records to see if parents are mentioned. Finally, I would go to 1901 Irish Census and look at the distribution of Keane families in Co Clare. If there aren't too many, you may spot something relevant or worth following up. Peter
