    3. Listers Patricia Kostelnik writes that she knows of 2 films made in Cavan: 1.) The Playboys 2.) The Run of the Country This is, according to my wife's cousins, is correct. How do I know this? That's a good question and I'm glad that somebody asked it. According to my wife's cousin, Philomena Smith McCaffrey and her Auntie Maggie Smith The Play Boys was filmed almost in its entierty in the wide spot in the road known as "RED HILLS" which is where Auntie Maggie lives, and has lived since the year they discovered dirt, and where Philomena grew up before marrying Mr. McCaffrey. Many of the extras in both films were Smiths, all related to Auntie M. and Philomena. "The Run of the Country" was also filmed in the RED HILLS and Killebandrick area. Once again the Family Smith found gainful employment as extras in the film. Some of the extras also used in this film were the cows which belonged to one of the Smiths. I saw "The PLAYBOYS" on tape about two weeks after I returned from Ireland which included a 4 day visit to that Town in May of 1998. It was easy to recognize landmarks, even the telephone box outside the post office that I used to call home and approve my daughter's request to replace the Alternator on my Chevy Corsica. The main Pub in Red Hills is known as "THE PLAY BOYS, and is just opposite the long north leg of the village Triangle. Its owned by one of the SMITHS. The other Pub, located on the short south side of the triangle is also owned by Smith relatives. The "QUIET MAN" may have had its village scenes filmed in Cong, County Mayo, but John Ford selected outdoor sites from an area of about 36+ sauare miles around that village. I picked up that juicy tidbit from a young lady publican in the village of Carna, which is near Clifden. I do love my 15 minutes of fame!
