    3. Thanks for the URL's, Jim, I had already found them by 'Googling', but I was wondering if any Galligans or descendants of Galligans from Co. Cavan had joined in a Galligan name DNA project. The reason is ask, Jim, is having done extensive searching for a Canadian namesake whose earliest known ancestor, a John Galligan, had arrived in the Ottawa Valley area of Ontario with, supposedly only, his parents in 1842 . My research with Ontario censuses and other such sources proved that he had an older brother and a younger sister, Anne, all born in Co.Cavan, as well as possible first cousins from the same , presently unknown parish in Co.Cavan. I did get a possible clue from a cemetery record when a Bridget Galligan, from the next Crown-granted lot indicated Kilmore, Co.Cavan as place her place of birth. But my search continues because, although I had discovered that his mother's name was Anne - there is, naturally no indication of her maiden surname, as she was married in Co.Cavan; his father's first name is also presently a mystery, but considering the eldest brother' name is Thomas, and when John got married in 1855, he named his first son Thomas Daniel. Needless to say my Canadian namesake is thrilled so far with the revelations that I unearthed, hence my question about a possible DNA project for Co.Cavan Galligans. Thanks, again Jim for the URL's. 3. Pádraig, I started a Cullivan DNA project group because none had been created yet. It is starting slow, but I've had further inquiries and interest, so I expect it will grow as knowledge about Genealogy DNA testing increases. You could start your own Galligan DNA Surname Group, even if you do not have the Galligan Y-DNA - you would simply want to get someone who does have it tested. Galligans who have joined those other projects listed at Family Tree DNA can also join the Galligan project - everyone can join two projects. Even if those Galligans don't join, you get to see who matches your DNA string of interest from the whole database of testers who have signed an agreement to allow their results to be shared. [Keep in mind it is pretty easy to start a project. I knew next to nothing, and although it seems intimidating, I was able to accomplish it fairly well.] I joined the Yahoo Group for DNA-Newbies to learn more about this whole thing. I lurk most of the time and only read the occasional email, but it is worth joining. If you joined you could ask about Galligan projects. You might get other places to look sent to you. You can look at the Cullivan project here: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.aspx?group=Cullivan There is also an interesting "Breifne Clans" project that the Cullivan members have joined, since it "is to establish Y-DNA profiles for the early Breifne Clans" of the 12th Century (covering counties Cavan and Leitrim). To learn more about the DNA-NEWBIE group, please visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DNA-NEWBIE To subscribe, send an email to: [email protected] With "subscribe" (no quotes) in the subject and body. Good luck! Susan Daily
