I am trying to research the surname Wiggins from Cavan. Everytime I enter a search I get nothing. I am looking for Joshua Wiggins who I am told was born in Cavan in about 1836. He came to Australia about 1859. He married Mary Fleming, also from Ireland. His father was Samuel Wiggins. Does anyone know anything about the surname Wiggins at all? Thanks, Joy Hudson
Maybe your family memory of "Cavan" is not referring to Co. Cavan but to some other Cavan Townland in some other county. My family memories of "Cavan" turned out to mean Cavan Townland in Co. Armagh! Joy, In addition to the other advice provided by the others, I have a few suggestions. I don't know what databases you have searched, but I sometimes like to look at the Griffiths Valuation online database (free) that sometimes can give me an idea where to look for a Surname, even if not everyone was listed in Griffiths: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php There are a few Samuel Wiggins listed. And there are a few Wiggins in County Cavan. Then I search a Records database of 11 counties (Cavan is one of them) that will show me if there are any Catholic Church records of a Surname available: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi_main.cfm#Counties They have 160 Wiggins Baptisms and 9 Marriages. 25 Baptisms are in County Cavan. (To find out more than county, name, and year, you have to pay for the records to be sent to you.) To search in County Cavan only, click here: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi.cfm?CountyID=4 I also like to post or search Message Boards for my Surname and County of interest. I noticed no one has posted about a Wiggins in Cavan, so you probably should post what you know there. Who knows, maybe a fellow descendant has also searched and not found a reference and decided not to post. Someone has to start! http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wiggins/mb.ashx Two people have posted the surname Wiggins on the County Cavan board, found here: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.cav.general/mb.ashx I also like to search Ellis Island (or Ancestry.com passenger lists) for my Surname of interest and County name. I always hope that a niece or nephew has come over to stay and lists their townland and father's name along with my relative or his family as the person they are coming to stay with. Use Stephen P. Morse's One-Step web page (white form) to search Ellis Island - found here: http://www.stevemorse.org/ [The Ellis Island search engine has missed too many of my relatives that Morse's web site found.] So these are just some places to give you further ideas. If you like what you see in the Griffiths list, your next step might be to look for church records on microfilm that would cover the townlands you are looking for. Not all parishes are microfilmed, however. And you have to know if they are Catholic or not. If you need further explanations, don't hesitate to ask.
