Looking for information on 19th and 20th century Gaughran and Collins families, probably along the area of Co. Cavan that borders Co. Meath. My great-grandparents were Bryan [called Bernard at times] Joseph Gaughran, born in Ireland 1855-1858, and his wife, Catherine Kate Collins, born 20 June, 1859, in Ireland; according to the family stories, they were married in Ireland on 9 May 1880; they left for the U.S. the following day. Family has it that Bryan left a small shoe repair business in Ireland for one of his brothers to take over. Bryans brother Patrick [born around 1848] was already in New York City as of 1868. I have requested copies of their death certificates and know from these that Kates parents were Patrick Collins and Ann Carolan; Bryan/Bernards parents were Eugene Gaughran and Bridget Smith. Bryans brother Patricks death certificate, however, lists his father as Owen. Perhaps Eugene was a given name and Owen was a nickname? These death certificates list just Ireland as the places of birth for all four of my great-great grandparents. I have a lead, from a descendant of Bernard and Kates daughter, Anna Gaughran Cunningham, that there is a family relation to a Bishop Gaughran of either County Meath or the Diocese of Meath, Ireland. I have researched Bishop Laurence Gaughran and know he was born in 1842 or 1843 in the parish of Lobinstown, Co. Meath; he studied and was ordained in Maynooth, spent time serving in Taghmon parish, Navan, and Kells, and became a bishop in 1906. He died in 1928 and is buried in the grounds of the Cathedral, which could either be St. Marys Cathedral in Mullingar or the former cathedral, currently St. Marys Church, in Navan [I am not sure which Bishop moved the diocesan seat to Co. Westmeath or in what year that took place]. Any details that look helpful would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. --------------------------------- Finding fabulous fares is fun. Let Yahoo!
