Thank you, Diane--can the GRO help me if I don't know for sure which county or even which parish to look in? Cathy [email protected] wrote: Since you have a wedding date, you could request a copy of the civil marriage record from the GRO. That would lead you to their parish(es) and church records. The failteromhat Griffith's index shows only one Gaughran in Cavan at that time, in Ballintemple parish, no Collinses there but nearby. They may have come from adjoining parishes. Have noticed this thread and may be of some assistance. The FHC nearest me has the INDEX films for births, marriages and deaths in Ireland from 1864-1958. Some gaps here and there but most films are here for most of Ireland [not Northern I. after 1922]. These are the same films it was suggested you rent. If Cathy or anyone else wishes me to check the INDEX films for the Registration data [year, name, surname, district of registration, volume, page # and nothing else, no parents, no residence, no ages except for deaths], you will need to send me a NAME, a SURNAME, a YEAR and an expected PARISH or DISTRICT. At least a COUNTY. The Registration districts for Cavan are Baillieborough, Bawnboy, Cavan, Coothill, Enniskillen, Granard, Kells and Oldcastle. Am told they are generally the same as the Poor Law Unions. I can't do a lookup without a YEAR to begin the search. The films are constructed year by year, not surname. Beginning 1864 as the books closed on Dec 31, all the names were gathered at the Registrar's offices and sent in for publication in full years worth of names for the entire country of Ireland that were Registered. Beginning 1878, the names were sent in by quarter years [3m spans] so there are 4 quarters of names per year. Each quarter year's books are alphabetized by surname just like the full years before [meaning its 4 times the work to look up names]. The INDEX covers all counties in Ireland. One bonus is for Church of Ireland is that marriages were recorded for that faith beginning 1845. It was the official religion for Ireland, so only those marriages were required to be recorded. Quaker, U.P., Roman Catholic and all others were not officially recorded, they were in books kept at the local church. Only a few of these books were filmed. 1864 marked the beginning of mandatory Civil Registration meaning all births, marriages and deaths were by law recorded at the local Registration Office. To find out if any of your parish of interest's records were filmed, go here and select KEYWORD SEARCH. Enter the word PAROCHIAL IRELAND to see if its records were filmed. There will be 462 returns. You could enter the parish name with it...but spelling must be exact which is a problem. Just scroll through the returns and you'll see all the films the FHC's have for Roman Catholic births, etc in Ireland. The FHC in my city is 8 minutes from my house, I work there as a non-churchmember on Wednesday evenings. The building has been closed 2 weeks for remodeling, it just opened up this past week, construction debris is still everywhere but we are open. I enjoy doing lookups but please send me as much information as you can [not a GEDCOM] and understand that without a year or brief span of years, I'll not be able to find what you seek. If you are asking about a very common surname [MURPHY, O'CONNER, O'DONNELL], I'll be happy to send 'your' Patrick or Mary....along with dozens of others and let you scratch your head]. Won't do any lookups on the GAUGHRAN and COLLINS one until I hear details of what is needed......Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA >
