have an interest in hewitt's - tullylish,gilford and laurencetown - county down - also hewitt's county longord,ballymahon. i have an elijah hewitt policeman married 1885 laurencetown to agnes j kerr - went to new zealand in mounted police ,had three children - elijah died there in new zealand. family post 1890 including all the sons went back to tullyish area banbridge. one of sons had 11 children . think elijah hewitt father was a francis hewitt (male) a farmer. however i have now found out elijah hewitt was born in co cavan. anyboby have any connections to the above. - i.e a francis hewitt b say c1840 or brothers of elijah hewitt b 1861 of county cavan.
There is an index to Griffith's Original Valuation online that you can search by surname and County. I entered just "Hew" under partial surname, to get all possible spellings. (You also might play with it.) There is no Francis Hewit(t) in Cavan listed, but this is not a census. It just is a very large list of land occupiers in Ireland c. 1856-7. Sorry to not have an easy answer for you.
