Can anyone tell me what information I would find on the 1864 index of Quarterly Returns? I notice there are 11 rolls of film in the other 1864 series. Can someone enlighten me what the 'v' stands for? Regards Julie Searching WEIRS from Ashfield, Cootehill, Kildrumsherdan Julie, If I recall correctly, in the civil register you will find the surname, name of the child (if given when registered), mother's name, father's name and occupation, townland, county. I believe the "v" you mention is the Volume for the Registry; that will help if you order film from Salt Lake. Regards. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Birth index films and Birth Registration films

    3. Julie - The INDEX films give only a scant bit of information....hopefully enough to idenitfy the right Birth [or marriage or death] you are seeking. The Index films are a series of 90 films made by the LDS church. The full handwritten Registration can be ordered from the GRO. Some years of these same REGISTRATION entries were filmed by the LDS church, there are around 1430 films in this series. A made-up example of a birth INDEX entry : Index film for 1864 : O'Lantern, Jack ...... Baillieborough.....2-345 Translates to Jack O'LANTERN's birth was registered in 1864 in Baillieborough volume 2 page 345. If you then order the LDS film with 1864 Births, volume 2 [happens to be #101081] you need to scroll to page 345 and look down the page of names to find Jack O'LANTERN's full entry. Without the Index film, you'd be looking through almost every frame of the film [thousands of images per film] to find it. The Index films are very important to finding the original entry. If you can't order the actual registration film or it wasn't a filmed year, you can go to the GRO's website online and for 6 Euros get a photocopy of the original handwritten entry [same as what was filmed]. If you give them the Index information from the Index film [name, year, parish, volume and page #] you will only pay 4 Euros each but that isn't on the GRO Fees pages, I confirmed this by writing them an eMail and asking. You will have to tell them you have the Index information to get the lesser price. I have access to the 1864 Birth Indexes for all of Ireland [film #101041] and can look up a name if you contact me. The nearest LDS church [only 8 minutes from my home] has all of the Index films that were made by the church microfilmers, but only a rare few of the actual register films are there to view, most have been sent back after ordering and viewing. Its easy to get lost trying to figure out the system. These films are not in stock and must be ordered into each FHC. Looking at one of the Birth Registrations from a film, these are the column headings, note that the name of the infant might be blank or say Unknown. It was not required that the child have a name to be registered. Most did, but some are seen with a last name only. Also, the last column about the Baptismal name is usually blank. Surely some have data but none I've seen yet. Number Date and Place of Birth Name [if any] Sex Name and Surname and Dwelling Place of Father Name and Surname and Maiden Surname of Mother Rank or Profession of Father Signature, Qualification and Residence of Informant When Registered Signature of Registrar Baptismal Name if added after Registration of Birth and Date Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA >
