Hello Just subscribed. Anyone out there researching the surname of SLOWEY or CLARKE. I have Margaret Ann SLOWEY born abt 1822 in So. Cavan, according to 1851 census in Manchester. She married Peter CLARKE born about 1820 in Enniskillen. Their first child was born 1847 in Manchester; therefore marriage must have taken place about 1842-1847. But don't know whether marriage in Manchester or Ireland. But as yet cannot find marriage in Manchester. Wondering if anyone has any ideas of a location for (Roman Catholic) marriage in Ireland? And if any records for possible churches available to search for the period 1842-1847. Any help appreciated! Regards Jane Coop (West Yorkshire, England)
Hi Jane, Availability of records varies parish by parish. I just did a search at http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/map.php?&set=yes and found a Margaret Slowey marriage in 1843 in Co West Meath, but there was not a corresponding entry for Peter Clarke, which implies it is not in their system. The fact that the record isn't available does not mean it doesn't exist, however. It could be that the parish did not make it available to the IFHF. If you knew the parish you were interested in, you could check http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/cavanrc.htm for availability. The National Library in Dublin would have a copy if it exists. The LDS has film of records for some parishes. Good luck. Hi, Jane! Pleased to meet you! Where have you been all my life! I've been researching Slowey/Sloey/Sloy since the beginning of time - well, at least since 1995 - without coming in contact with another person so involved. The cc is to my sister, Carol Gebhart Marlo, in St. Louis, Missouri who has shared my frustration. I'm in Long Beach, California. We have exhausted the records of both the PRO of the Republic and the PRO of NI, such church records of which we are aware, and also the patience of more than one researcher without advancing our search a single step so I'm going to give you the whole enchilada, the whole nine yards, re: my GGF, John Slowey, before you turn out to be a product of my feverish imagination. What we know of John Slowey is this: o He was born in 1841, probably in Ireland. The town and county is unknown. o He married Elizabeth Davidson /Davison/Davis in about 1863. The location is unknown. Elizabeth (b. 22 June 1842) was the daughter of John Davidson/Davison/Davis and Elizabeth Cline/Clyne o Family tradition says that their first two children, John (b. 1865), and Elizabeth (b. 17 Feb 1866), were born in Glasgow, Scotland. We have no record of this. o The family emigrated to North America in about 1869. John is found at several addresses in Allegheny City, now northern Pittsburgh, between 1870 and 1876. o Three more children were born in Allegheny City, Eleanor (1870), Kate (27 Oct 1872), and Mary Josephine, our grandmother, (5 Feb 1876). o The family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1876 where John Slowey farmed and perhaps worked for the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad. The family is shown in Bogy Township of Jefferson County, Arkansas in the 1880 census. o John Slowey died between 1880 and 1883. Do you know John and Elizabeth?
