No civil birth or marriage records in Ireland in the 1830s, but Knockbride RC parish records are on LDS film 0926133, item 3, baptisms 1835-79, marriages 1835-77, and burials 1835-75. You should find Ellen and John's marriage and Catherine's baptism. The marriage record may or may not list Ellen's parents, but worth a try. (Have you checked her US death record?) As you may know, Griffith's shows some Carrolls in Blackstep, probably relatives of Ellen's. Burials of Carrolls in Blackstep may include Ellen's parents. Diane
Diane Thank you.... this information certainly helps.. Ellen died in 1871 before death records were required. The information of her birth date & place was taken from her grave stone. John died in 1900 & his parents were both listed on his death certificate. ----- Original Message ----- From: DLCulhane@cs.com<mailto:DLCulhane@cs.com> To: irl-cavan@rootsweb.com<mailto:irl-cavan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 03, 2009 2:31 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CAVAN] Birth & , Marriage info for Blackstep,Parrish Knockbride No civil birth or marriage records in Ireland in the 1830s, but Knockbride RC parish records are on LDS film 0926133, item 3, baptisms 1835-79, marriages 1835-77, and burials 1835-75. Joanne, The FHC where I volunteer as a non-churchmember HAS film #926133 permanently on the shelves, I ordered it over 8y ago for a Kilann birth that was located and was readable. Here is what's listed to be in it : Item 1 Parochial registers of Killesher (Fermanagh), 1855-1881 Catholic Church. Parish of Killesher (Fermanagh) Item 2 Parochial registers of Killann (Cavan), 1835-1880 Catholic Church. Parish of Killann (Cavan) Item 3 Parochial registers of Knockbride (Cavan), 1835-1860 Catholic Church. Parish of Knockbride (Cavan) The film notes for Knockbride say the film has portions that are illegible and faded. It was filmed in 1973 from originals in Dublin. Anyone can order in this film for viewing, making photocopies and doing research.....however if you wish a simple lookup done, please send me details and I'll check that film. Need a name, which Church registers you need searched and an expected date. Will also pass along that Civil Registration began in Ireland in 1864....any death in Ireland after 1 Jan, 1864 must by law be registered at the parish General Register Officve [GRO]. Therefore the 1871 death would be in the Registration books......or was this death in the US ? Sorry, I've not read the original query. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA =========================
Morning Meg, Thank you for your most generous offer. Would you check Item 3-Parochial registers of Knockbride ( Cavan) 1835-1860 Catholic Church, Parish of Knockbride (Cavan) for a marriage between JOHN DUFFY and ELLEN CARROLL. I believe the year was 1838, but could have been anytime between 1837 & 1839. John's parents were Dennis ( Denis) Duffy & Ellen Boyle. I would be surprised if they are listed on John's marriage record, but I'm including them just in case. Would you also check for a baptism for CATHERINE DUFFY ( daughter of John & Ellen) born 1839. Ellen died in Westville, Franklin Co. New York in 1871 before records were required to be kept. I was hoping the Irish records went back far enough to give me her birth month & day in 1813, and her parents names, but any bit of information is greatly appreciated. Many thanks for your time & effort. Meg, I can't thank you enough! I look forward to receiving the images. I am puzzled by your statement" so I suspect it's a name like Eugene though its unusual for Scotland"..why the reference to Scotland? Did you mean Ireland ? Interesting though, my Great grandfather, son to John & Ellen was named Alfred Eugene. Thank you again, your TIME & EFFORT IS GREATLY APPRCIATED. So the 1813 birth won't be found. The film contains : Baptisms, marriages and deaths, 1835-1860. Film #926133 I did find the 1838 marriage of John and Ellen, writing is really badly deteriorated but with knowledge of what it says, you can pick out the words. There were no parents, no residence or farmland name, but there are 2 witnesses. The text is in Latin which I studied way too long ago, but have seen enough latin texts like these to recognize some given names. The Birth in 1839 is likewise.....hardly readable and in Latin. There is actually more information in the entry, however its mostly illegible. I've made copies digitally and also with the copy machine set at differing darknesses. Can send them as digital images. They will arrive from a different eMail address, the default eMail on the machine where the pictures are held is different than mine but the server is the same. The subject line will identify them clearly. The microfilmed images ware done in the negative. More words seem to be legible if shot that way. I did the photocopies in the positive, so some are dark to see the center of the page, others much lighter to see into the shadowy margins where other words are. The Marriage entry reads : 1 March, 1838 In Mat'm Conjuxi Johanium Duffy et Elenoram Carrol coram Terentio? Duffy et Hugam Duffy Conjunxi is ' joined ' and Coram is ' in the presence of ' The name Terentio is extremely hard to decipher and may begin with an F....but Ferentio is just as puzzling. The birth entry of Catherine is even more deteriorated : 6 March 1839 B Cathrannam F Johannus Duffy et Elen--- Carroll Eug?----? [2-3 more illegible words run together into blackened margin]. The rest of the page is hard to read but ' Eug--- ' is not among the usual words, so I suspect its a name like Eugene though its unusual for Scotland. Perhaps its a witness or presenter of the child. Every entry had the ' F ' which I thought referred to the latin word for ' son '. However, both male and female infants had this letter immediately after their given name. I'll send the JPGs since you probably wish to look at the images.
