One place that helped me find my Co Armagh ancestor was a search in the Families in British India Society (FIBIS) http://www.fibis.org/ He had retired from the Britsh army in 1819, and there he was. Im not sure about other military sources, but when in doubt I google. Have turned up a lot that way.
