Here’s my puzzle which I hope some of you might have ideas on. My GGrandfather John Caffrey married Ann Sheridan in the Arva RC Church in 1891. I found that information at the IFHF site. Unfortunately, the abstract did not include parent’s names, and so Ann Sheridan is a bit of a dead end for me. When I last visited Cavan in 2006, I found the April 1863 baptism record for my GGrandfather John in the register at St. Michael’s in Potahee. This date is of course before civil registration, but I have a pretty good handle on my Caffrey’s. (The family farm was in Garrymore.) When I visited the Registrar’s office in Dublin, I was unsuccessful in finding a civil marriage record for John and Ann. I’ve worked with the Cavan office, which was very helpful, but also unable to find a civil marriage registration. They also checked in Counties Leitrim and Longford. John Caffrey became a baker, and the family seemed to move around. They had a daughter born in Arva, my grandfather born in Bawnboy, the next son born in Crossdoney, and the youngest 2 in Granard, Co Longford. John and Ann eventually settled in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, and are buried now in Potahee. I have a copy of their death records, but of course, parents are not listed. The marriage witnesses were Bernard Whitney and Mary Drumm. I’m not sure how/if that can help me at all. The sponsors at the daughter’s birth were Bernard Whitney and Mary Leonard. From the civil birth record, present at birth was Mary Sheridan, but no relationship given. Again not sure what to do with that info. None of the sponsors for the other baptisms were a Sheridan (although I have not seen my Grandfather’s record yet). Whitney was not a very common name, and I did find a Bernard Whitney immigrating to the US, but I was not able to identify any connections here with that individual. Since John was a baker, I presumed that he may have worked in Arva town, and that perhaps Ann is from there, but that's pure speculation. Any thoughts? Thanks. John
John, I don't have any tips toward your brick wall, but I wanted to let you know that there is an online index for old County Leitrim newspapers. If you find a record that is of interest, you can e-mail the library and they'll send the copy for $5. This is the website for the library. http://www.leitrimcoco.ie/eng/Services_A-Z/Library Click on Leitrim Newspaper Search on the right. Since your ancestors lived in Leitrim during a good part of their lives, you may find mention of them. Melanie Egan Orlando
