    1. Re: [IRL-CAVAN] Norton/Naughton Dilemma
    2. I suspect they were Naughton in Ireland and became Norton in the US because that name was more common here (just as my Lohans became Logans). IFHF unlikely to change the spellings of names. Diane

    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Norton/Naughton Dilemma
    2. Maria Crocker
    3. Tonight I decided I would search the IFHF for my Cavan ancestors, in particular, the NORTON clan. When results starting coming up with the surname of "NAUGHTON" I figured I'd discovered yet another unknown family fact. When the names, dates, etc., starting matching what I had for my NORTONs, I got a little confused. Two of these people I found a few years back on the LDS sight - as NORTON. The IFHF site states "Church Baptismal Record" or "Church Marriage Record" at the top of the page. Who is correct?? Aren't the LDS records a scan/copy of the original church records? Then I decided to search NAUGHTON on the LDS site and found two more children of the family I'm researching (and already has as NORTON). My gut tells me to go with the IFHF because it automatically converted NORTON to NAUGHTON ...?? Also, how do I reflect this in my family tree programs? Any suggestions? The family was known as NORTON here in Maryland, but how do I show the NAUGHTON connection? I'd be grateful for any suggestions on the name and clarification on the records... Maria

    2. Hi, Kay: It varies widely from parish to parish. There are some that go back to 1818, but not many. To learn the years covered for any parish and where films can be found, go www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ and click on Roman Catholic parish maps, then on the parish itself, and you'll get a list. Good luck! Diane
