    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Researching in Dublin
    2. "E" Sharp
    3. We just returned from a 3 week vacation to Europe and while there we spent some time in Dublin where I did some research at the National Library. It was very easy to find and the people at the Library are most helpful. So if your planning a trip there, don't hesitate to spend some time doing your research. I did research before I went and I did know it was County Cavan, had the name of the town, parish, and approximate dates, etc. I also checked on line before I went, to see what records were available for the area I was researching as some of the records/dates are missing for that area. I did learn it is pronounced Ca(short a)vin. This was our 3rd trip to Dublin but the first to do research and as usual, believe it or not, only about 15 minutes of rain on the days we were there and had a wonderful time. We walked from one end of the city to the other and back many times. There was a big, I think rugby, tournament going on and lots of fun and laughter in the streets. Elaine

    3. Hi if you search the Griffith valuation site you will find Samuel Hart in Antrim and Down http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php I ncan find no Hart in the Landed Estates. Therefore he may not have been the owner of the land. http://www.landedestates.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/family-list.jsp?letter=H According to the Irish Family History Foundation site marriage recored for Clare PC only begin 1845. 3. Can anyone give me some guidance about how I might find out my ancestor's landlord's name. He was Samuel Hart and he married Rebecca Kelly in Clare Presbyterian Church in (I know, it's not Cavan!) Co. Armagh in 1840 before they emigrated to Canada. I persist asking in Co. Cavan because there is a family memory of "Cavan" though I do not know if that refers to the county or to some townland named Cavan. Many thanks. Karen

    3. Thanks Diane, I'll look up the parents now, as I have the marriage of Arthur and Bridget. I did have real problems with this family, Arthur married twice, both times to a Bridget, and then his son John married twice, both times to an Ann. I think they couldn't be bothered to remember a new name for the wife, so chose someone with the same name.. 3. Lyn, Thanks for that, although I had some copies of birth register entries, I hadn't twigged. I now have some more credits for Scotlands People and have obtained one which shows 1846, Dundee. So that just leaves their births and their parents marriage... Thanks again - most helpful. Don Lyn Brown wrote: > Hello Arthur, > Are there any children born in 1855 or later in Scotland? 3. For Rob and anyone else who is interested, this was posted to the GOONS mailing list about obtaining copies of parish registers from the LDS church :- "The system is the same for everybody and still low tech. Obtain a form or download one. Complete the form with details of the events for which copies are required, including names, date, place and film number. Enter you postal address and credit card details on the form. Post it snail mail to Salt Lake City. You can also fax it. About 3 weeks later a large envelope of photocopies should arrive. I guess that when the big programme to digitise and index everything is in full swing, it will be possible to view on line." 2. At least where I live, films are sent only to Family History Centers, where they can be viewed. You can get photocopies of individual pages (for items that have page numbers) sent to your home, but at $2 a page, most parish registers would cost a small fortune, and they don't have page numbers. If it were possible to get individual pages from parish registers, that would be great (for those situations in which you had an exact date). Diane

    3. Don, I have no information about your Arthur McGuire however the 36 McGuire/Maguire people recorded in the searchable surname database of my Genealogy Pages originated in County Cavan. Some including my gt-grandparents went to Scotland to find work during the famine years before emigrating to Canada. If you see any possible connections to them or others in my family tree I am always happy to compare notes and share information. \ Dave Ingram My Genealogy WebPages: Updated 16 APRIL 2009 http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=713 Personal information is not shown for individuals who could still be living for privacy protection. ps: Would you by chance be connected to Lord Farnham, 1832-1860 of County Cavan, landlord of many tenant farmers? http://www.sierratel.com/colinf/genuki/CAV/Estates/Farnham.htm http://search.live.com/results.aspx?FORM=IEFM1&q=lord+farnham

    3. Forgive my intrusion Dianne, but the advice you gave Don re his McGuire enquiry is relevant to my enquiries as well. You said in part he should "get the church records". Can you tell me please how does one do that from the distance of Australia. Any help to point me in the right direction on this matter would be appreciated. Cheers Rob Flynn

    2. Records for many RC parishes have been filmed by the LDS and can be rented through your nearest Family History Center. Filmed records for virtually all RC parishes are held by the National Library of Ireland in Dublin, as well as in county heritage centers, but you have to pay someone to search them for you (or go to Dublin yourself). To see who has copies your ancestors' parishes' records, go to irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse, click on RC parish maps, then click on the counties of interest and the individual parishes. In each case you'll get a table that shows where records are. (Note that RC parishes are not the same as civil parishes.) Of course, in many cases parish priests have access to old records, but most don't have time to rummage through them in response to individual inquiries, which is why they've allowed them to be filmed. 3. Hi, This is my first post, so I hope I don't break any rules. I was wondering how I could find the birth of Arthur McGuire (about 1821) who claims to have been born in Cavan, Ireland, on the 1851 Scottish Census. Also of Bridget Sullivan (abt 1827) - same place, together with their marriage. They moved to Scotland some time before the 1851 census I'm assuming that their marriage took place before 1851, as they were married on the 1851 census. Any help or direction pointing would be very much appreciated. Don Farnham

    1. Re: [IRL-CAVAN] McGuire - Cavan
    2. There are two routes you could take to try to find the marriage (which would be easier than the births because later). According to the Griffith's index on failteromhat.com, Sullivan was not a common Cavan name in the 1850s. You could note the civil parishes, then see if any of those parishes also had McGuires, then get the church records (if there aren't too many parishes and you have patience) and look for the marriage. A faster but less reliable route is to use the Irish Family History Foundation site (less reliable because it doesn't include all church records). For the years 1843-1851 the index shows only one marriage of an Arthur McGuire in Cavan, in 1846. Unfortunately, it doesn't show a Bridget Sullivan marrying the same year, but still might be worth a look. You can pay on line by credit card, so fast and easy. Diane

    3. Hello All, I'm searching for any information on the CONVEY family in County Cavan.  All I have to go on is the fact that my gggrandfather, Joseph Rushworth of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, married Catherine E. CONVEY in Beltarbet church, County Cavan on 18 October 1843.  Their descendants were catholic so I presume the marriage took place in the local church. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.  Best wishes, Paul.

    1. Re: [IRL-CAVAN] Convey
    2. Filmed copies of the Belturbet/Annagh RC records are can be found at the National Library of Ireland and Cavan Heritage Center beginning in 1845. Too late for you. No Rushworth births/baptisms in Cavan in the LDS pilot site (which includes civil birth index) or in Irish Family History Foundation site. The only Rushworth listed in the Griffith's (1850s) is Thomas in Co. Galway, and the only Irish births in the IGI are two children to John and Hannah Rishworth, also in Galway, in the 1870s, so it doesn't look like Joseph and Catherine stayed in Cavan, perhaps not even in Ireland. There are no Conveys in the Griffith's index, but MacLysaght says Convey is a synonym for Conway, and there are several in Cavan, including a Thomas Conway in Annagh parish. It could be that Thomas was a brother of Catherine's. You might check Anglican records for Annagh/Belturbet. Since Joseph was English, they may have married in the Church of Ireland, even though they later raised their children Catholic. Diane
