I don't know the names of my great great grandparents. His name may have been John Farley. I also know they came to the States prior to 1853. All I know is that they were from County Cavan. They settled in Brooklyn, NY. But I think about one third of the population of Brookly were named Farley. My great grandparents were John Farley and Ellen Curtis. Hi As the family moved around a lot ,it is possible that John was a member of the ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY POLICE FORCE. (RIC) The index is on Ancestry Many retired RIC constable had other jobs when they retired from the force. A search of the 1901 and 1911 census may tell you where the family were in 1901./1911The census also mentions the occupation In 1891 the bride married in her home parish. Have you considered searching the Northern Ireland records. Another possibility is that the names on the marriage certificate is not the names you remember. The Ango Celt Newspaper for Cavan is also on line at this address http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/ http://www.emeraldancestors.com/ http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml Good Luck Rosaleen Sligo Ireland > From: irl-cavan-request@rootsweb.com > Subject: IRL-CAVAN Digest, Vol 4, Issue 59 > To: irl-cavan@rootsweb.com > Date: Wed, 10 Jun 2009 01:00:41 -0600 > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Have you searched the church records? They're your best bet for information before Griffith's (1850s) and civil registration (1864). Diane
Thanks All for your responses! A request is now winging its way to Sacred Heart in Arva. Rosaleen, the family was in Granard in 1901 and Ballinamore in 1911. I know that John was a baker. In fact my grandfather's youngest brother left Ireland for NY after a fire in the bakery in Ballinamore in 1929. Since they were married in the church in Arva, and the first born was also born in Arva, I assumed that Ann is from there, and John was working there as a baker. Melanie, thanks for the library links. They've made great progress! I spent an afternoon at the Ballinamore library in 2006, but the index wasn't quite so electronic. And unfortunately, I didn't know about the bakery fire at the time. John, I don't have any tips toward your brick wall, but I wanted to let you know that there is an online index for old County Leitrim newspapers. If you find a record that is of interest, you can e-mail the library and they'll send the copy for $5. This is the website for the library. http://www.leitrimcoco.ie/eng/Services_A-Z/Library Click on Leitrim Newspaper Search on the right. Since your ancestors lived in Leitrim during a good part of their lives, you may find mention of them. Melanie Egan Orlando
I'd look to see if Mary Drumm married a Leonard, during the interval between the marriage and the daughter's birth. I must have deleted this one before I read it. The FHC nearby has INDEX film [not the full registration] for 1891 Marriages if it would help any. Someone will need to re-contact me with any details to find this marriage. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA
Your best bet would be to contact the church direct and see what they have in their records. My Grandparents married in 1925 and although noted in the marraige register at St Collumcille's Church at Aughnacliffe and a notation in the baptismal register at St Michael's Potahee there is no civil record of the marraige at all.
