Hello again, firstly thanks to all replies. I must confess however I am a little confused - should I try for certs at PRONI or GRO ? Regards A bit confused pj
Hi and many thanks for your kind reply, sorry for the delay in answering but I have been on holiday. Yes it was suggested to me that Cavan was at one time in N ireland, I tried for a birth cert for Mary Kelly frrom the office at Belfast but thgey immediately sent my cheque back. I have tried for the republic twice, I have no family members who know where she came from, some think she may have come from Co Waterford but I have tried for that county too. I know her Father Owen definately came from Co Cavan, as I have some of his Army records and his place of birth is given as Annagh his discharge address was given as Redhill on his discharge papers. I have thought could she have been born at sea? or on route to Redhill or maybe she wasn't registered? but the family were Catholic and so I presume she was registered and probably baptised somewhere too. I have census copies but unfortunately they only give Ireland as place of birth! Regards pj
Diane Thank you.... this information certainly helps.. Ellen died in 1871 before death records were required. The information of her birth date & place was taken from her grave stone. John died in 1900 & his parents were both listed on his death certificate. ----- Original Message ----- From: DLCulhane@cs.com<mailto:DLCulhane@cs.com> To: irl-cavan@rootsweb.com<mailto:irl-cavan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 03, 2009 2:31 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CAVAN] Birth & , Marriage info for Blackstep,Parrish Knockbride No civil birth or marriage records in Ireland in the 1830s, but Knockbride RC parish records are on LDS film 0926133, item 3, baptisms 1835-79, marriages 1835-77, and burials 1835-75. You should find Ellen and John's marriage and Catherine's baptism. The marriage record may or may not list Ellen's parents, but worth a try. (Have you checked her US death record?) As you may know, Griffith's shows some Carrolls in Blackstep, probably relatives of Ellen's. Burials of Carrolls in Blackstep may include Ellen's parents. I'm working with very little information. What I know: My GG-grandmother Ellen Carroll was born 1813 in the town of Blackstep, Parrish of Knockbride. Co Cavan. I do not know who were her parents. Ellen married (abt 1838) John Duffy, son of Dennis Duffy & Ellen Boyle. They were married in Ireland, but I don't know where. Their first child, Catherine Duffy was born 1839 in Ireland. John & Ellen emmigrated soon afterwards,to New York state, possibly through Canada. John is listed as head of Household on the1840 Malone, Franklin Co,New York census. I have been able to trace & record the family after their arrival in the United States, but nothing about their lives in Ireland. My question...with this limited information where should I start my research in Ireland? Birth, Baptism & Marriage records seem to me where to start, but I have no idea where to look... are records for Blackstep available, or do I need to look for parrish records.... any suggestions or directions greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Joanne Mack, Oregon
At the brsgenealogy site, which I believe equates to the info of the Cavan Heritage Center, there were 2 Mary Kelly's baptized in Annagh between 1880 and 1882. 2 matches for the search criteria: kelly (plus variants) mary 1880-1882 Parish: ANNAGH (RC) Action Source Surname First Name Year County Church Baptism Kelly Mary Ellen 1880 Co. Cavan Church Baptism Kelly Mary Josephine 1882 Co. Cavan I decided to guess at father's names, which is another filter allowed. Mary Ellen's father is John Kelly, and Mary Josephine's father is Timothy Kelly. Not sure where that leaves you. Note that Annagh civil parish is in Cootehill and Cavan registration districts. The on-line birth index on the LDS site shows Mary Kelly births in Cavan in 1880 and 1882, in Cootehill in 1881. With the volume and page numbers on the site, you can get the registrations from the GRO for 4 euros apiece. Probably better to rule out Cavan and Cootehill before turning to Waterford. Another route is to try for Mary's baptismal record through the Cavan Heritage Center, since the LDS hasn't filmed Annagh RC parish and the NLI film goes up only to 1880. Hope this helps. Hi Pat, For certs, you would go to the GRO. This link on the Proni website explains what records they do NOT have -> http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/research_and_records_held/records_not_held_in_ proni.htm My understanding of PRONI, and others may explain it differently, is similar to a role of the National Library and National Archives in Dublin. They do have microfilmed copies of many records of public interest, including parish records from various denominations. The official record keeper for birth-marriage-death, however, is the GRO (or GRONI). Hope that helps a little. Hello, Has anyone got a family of BRICE in Derrins Townland? Mine is Arabella Brice, born c 1800, married John Corbett somewhere nearby, probably circa 1830. Drum village is near Derrins in Co Monaghan. Drum is on the border with counties Cavan and Monaghan. Regards, Lyn Brown in Griffith NSW
I sent a message earlier that never seemed to come through - so here goes again. Apologies if it did go through I want to thank the list, especailly Rosaleen, for your help in getting me started in chasing up my Jackson family. I have been chasing up what is available in Sydney and an index to BDMs gave me John and Jemima's marriage date. Have ordered LDS films of the RIC records and parish registers and as the 1911 Irish census for Cavan should be available shortly (according to their fantastic website) will await these before further research. Further Queensland research around one daughter Agnes Jackson (Grantham) indicates other members of the family just may have also come to Australia .......! Since then the LDS film of Royal Irish Constabulary has arrived and more info is added to the mix! cheers Narelle

Hello all I need some help with where Derrin, Co. Cavan, Ireland is or was. Some of us believe our ancestors were from there but as of yet, I can't find this particular location. What I am finding is Derrin, Co. Laois, Ireland. But that is no in any remote closeness to Co.Cavan. Is it possible Derrin, Co. Cavan, Ireland no long exist? Kind regards Diana Nowell
If you ever need it in future and it doesn't work the first time (match any), READ THE DIRECTIONS! and try each of the various suggestions. As he says, most confusions occur over spelling and how it changes being handed down. Also, for others new to this site (www.seanruad.com), remember that the way an English speaker says the word might be far different than the way an Irish speaker would say it. My grandfather lived in Ahoghill, which does not sound like A Hog Hill, but more, I am told, like "Howell". Lots of confusion for me if I go to Ireland and start asking around for "A Hog Hill", I'm sure! Nancy
