Hello Listers. I would be grateful for any advice/suggestions to resolving a conundrum My gggrandfather was John McMahon, son of Philip McMahon and Elizabeth Meehan, who was christened on 12/12/1830 in the RC parish of Drumgoon. What is the best way of getting hold of further information about Philip McMahon and Elizabeth Meehan (ie age, parents, other family, occupations and especially where they lived?). Also is there anyone out there who might be researching this family? Sincerely Rob FLYNN
As you probably know, Drumgoon/Cootehill RC parish records go back only to 1829, so unless Philip and Elizabeth married in 1829 or early 1830, there's not likely to be a record of their marriage. The Griffith's index shows Philip McMahons in Cavan, but none in Drumgoon. You might check the Tithe Applotments, done in 1820s and 1830s. Diane

It's always better to get a photocopy of the original rather than a transcription because transcriptions can contain errors or omissions. I got only a few transcriptions through the IFHF, stopped when I realized, for example, that causes of death had been left off death certificates. Diane
I've purchased a number of transcribed documents through the Irish Family History Foundation website. Now with the Civil Record Index available on the Family Search pilot website, I wanted to find out if it is worthwhile to purchase any duplicate records from the government office (GRO), other than that the GRO copies would be a primary source. Has anyone found errors or additional information when getting the actual document from GRO? Melanie Egan Orlando FL
I just acquired the Baptismal certificates of my CONNELL g-g grandfather [b 1836] and his four older siblings; the eldest was born in 1828. This was from County Cavan, Catholic parish of Balyna, St. Bridget's Church in Clogharinka/Clogharinkoe. In addition, their mother DORAN, and her siblings' records were there back to 1808. So, you may not want to assume you'll be disappointed. Carolyn, I was initially ecstatic since my grgrandparents had been quite elusive(to me!). Finding the right record was exciting. Disappointment set in because I still didn't know the name of my grgrandmother's father, so I'm not sure where to look for her. All may not be lost for you yet. The document should have at least contained the name of the parish. That in all likelihood would have been the parish of the bride. You could try contacting the priest to see if there might have been more info in the register. You might also see if he can look for other potentially related records (baptisms or other marriages in the same time frame with similar name). If the parish is in the Diocese of Kilmore, you can find contact info here... http://www.kilmorediocese.ie/the-parishes. And has been pointed out to me, including a small donation to the priest is generally appreciated. I've found that the information on the downloaded records is sometimes not as complete as that on the original. For example, no cause of death in the transcription of a death certificate on which it was provided. If the parish register has been filmed, you might check the film to be sure information wasn't omitted. Diane
Hi Carolyn, I think it's hard to define "usual" for the parish records. Each priest had his own way of recording. For marriages, you might get parents, and would probably get witnesses. You might get a townland, but not necessarily. I wouldn't expect to find age or occupation in a church record. If it occurred after 1864, however, you at least have a date which you can use to get the civil record, which would have age, father and occupation. In the couple of cases where I've purchased the records, the value to me was the confirmation of the match of the 2 individuals, and the date of the marriage. I too wish that parents were listed, but it is what it is. One side note, which I find interesting..., my GrGrandparents marriage was recorded in Latin, which was not uncommon. When the record was transcribed, they chose to translate it into English. I discovered this because I've been exchanging emails with the current pp. It doesn't matter too much, other than I generally record exactly what was written in the registers when keeping notes on my ancestors. (Johannes for John, Anna for Anne). And I guess to answer your original question, Father did offer this to me in one of our exchanges: "Sadly , the priest who was in the parish at the time generally ignored the column for parents' and witnesses' names so there are no further details for John and Anna ( the form of entry)...".
