    3. Hi, I too have McGuire's from Cavan who were working in the Jute industry in Dundee. I am having problems finding them in Cavan, but as I can only use the internet, and looking at free indexes at that, I understand that it may take me some time to find them. I do have details of all the Scottish vital stats that I need for my direct line, but am beginning to work out on peripheral lines to see if there are any living relatives who may have had more luck tracing their ancestors. 1. [IRL-CAVAN] Maguire/McGuire and Devlin
    2. Hi Folks, I have found a record on Scotland's People that is quite interesting but seems a bit far fetched. I am tapping into your greater wisdom and expertise. I have found a marriage for Terrence McGuire, parents Denis McGuire and Helen Brady, no location given and Mary Devlin, of County Cavan, father James, deceased and mother Maria Donoly. The marriage is registered in the Burgh of Dundee in County Forfar Scotland in the local Catholic Church on November 26, 1858. Witness was Philip Lynch and Hannah Clark From their son's marriage certificate I can verify that I am fairly sure that this is the set of parents that I am seeking. Their grandson was in my GGGrandparents household on the night of the 1901 Fermanagh census. I know that times were hard. Would they have travelled to the East Coast of Scotland for work? Perhaps there were more Irish working there? All comments and suggestions will be considered. Roy thank you for mentioning the idea of sharing information with others on certificates that we have that contain info not our own. Unfortunately the other bride and groom listed are from Tyrone so will post there. Actually seems I answered my own question if folks from Tyrone were there too. In further reading the second marriage on the same day I find a witness to the second marriage is Mary McGuire ( the recently married Mary Devlin??) same day, same church. Friends or relatives. Friends most likely as all are listed as "weavers." Janet

    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Cavan Flacks c.1832
    2. Ted Flack
    3. Help? Without direct access to the UK National Archives, I am reliant on the records that are available on-line. The searches I have done on-line have not been succesful in identifying a possible Flack family living in and around Bailieborough, Cavan in 1831 to which William, b. 1 Apr 1810 or 1809, could have belonged (The Army records show that William said he was from the "Parish of Killan, in or near the Town of Balyburrow"). The only clues that I have as to his parents names are that his father may have been also William and that an Elizabeth Flack, possibly his mother, is buried in the same grave in Burnley. The family was Presbyterian (William baptised his son in Limerick Prebyterian Church on 25 Feb 1858.) I have found Flack families in Monaghan and further North, and a family in Lurganbane, but non with a William and Elizabeth. Can anyone suggest how I might proceed? Regards Ted Flack Brisbane Australia

    3. In searching for help for Ted on his Flack name, I went looking for the site that has records on births, deaths, marriages, that you can partially see and then purchase. What happened to it? I have it bookmarked as this, https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi_main.cfm but get an error message now. I have tried breaking it off at various places, as well as googling, but can't bring it up. Would some kind soul tell me what it is? BTW, Ted, in my Comerford line, most of them changed their name to Comiskey during The Troubles, I think. But for a chance remark by my aunt, I would not have figured it out for a long time--but that Irish Times site does list it as an alternative. nancy

    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Irish Civil Index on Familysearch Site
    2. I recently told the support team at familysearch.org that a relative's entry in the civil birth index does not appear in the on-line index (on Record Search pilot) for that year, nor do three others from that birth index page that I searched for randomly, suggesting the page was skipped or misentered. They said I should keep a list of the errors I'd noted, as it might be possible in the future to correct the index (a notice of that capability would be posted). I'd suggest that everyone who has photocopies of actual civil registrations check them against the on-line index, as time permits, and note any discrepancies so that they can someday be corrected. This is a great resource, but it clearly still needs work. Diane Culhane

    3. I have listed beneath the names, places and dates of the last dozen or so deeds I have posted to my web site this week. Recently, I have received a few emails asking why I am making deeds my focus. I find it to be one of the most productive ways through brick walls when it comes to that class of people who had leases of land. As a result of my work in this past week, I have been able to connect a few dozen more people in my tree and also I have been able to add details about dozens more. For those of us whose known ancestors stretch back into the 1700s, this is sometimes the best way to make progress. And I continue to share these transcriptions with others on the lists, in part because sharing feels good, but also because I am always hungry to learn more. The updated tree can be found at: Family Tree: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=silverbowl The deeds can be accessed either at What's New: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/misc/whatsnew.htm or else on the page: where I have hyperlinks to all the deeds: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/Wills_and_Will_abstracts.htm As always, I appreciate learning of any errors that need correction. I also try to correct case-sensitive errors as some searches won't work when I get them wrong (example "WIlliam" instead of "William". Also, as always, enjoy and let me know if you find family.
