    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Anglo Celt - resend of November 30, 2003 transcription
    2. Kay Stanton
    3. "The Anglo Celt" Cavan; Thursday, February 7, 1856 ANOTHER FATAL OUTRAGE. - On Tuesday night last, two brothers named M'DONNELL, residing near Butlersbridge, in this county, were so badly beaten at their own house that one of them died on yesterday, and the life of the other is in imminent peril. It appears that some parties returning from the fair of this town passing by their dwelling place, challenged them to make their appearance, and they foolishly responded, whereupon they were attacked. And the issue was as we have stated it. Theophilus THOMPSON, Esq., J.P., of this town, took the dying declaration of the deceased as well as the information of the other, and A man named M'CONNELLl, his wife, brother and sister, with two others, have been lodged in gaol. An inquest on the body is being held this day. We think it but right to state that M'Connell and others of the prisoners were observed to be the worse for liquor when leaving the fair. Various causes are assigned for the outrage; we refrain from stating any of the! m until we see what will be substantiated upon the inquest. THE ARMY. - George MOFFATT, Esq., sons of the late Rev. George B. MOFFATT, of Drumlane Glebe, lately passed his examination at Sandhurst for a commission in the army. The young gentleman, who is only about sixteen years old, was educated at CREGHAN House School, by the Rev. R. D. ALLEN, and it is not less creditable to his instructor than to himself, that at so early an age, he was enabled on that trial to obtain fourth place from amongst a large body of much more adult competitors. THE WEATHER. - The time, that has elapsed since Christmas, was most unfavourable to the agriculturist. First the frosts so hardened the ground, and then the thaws and almost constant rains rendered it so soft that nothing could be done with it; only for the considerable amount of work that was got through in the early winter, the country would be badly off indeed. Nor is there any appearance of a clearing off as yet; all last night the rain fell most copiously while the winds blew like a very hurricane. MARRIED. - On Wdnesday, the 30th ult., in Knockbride Roman Catholic Church , by the Rev. Patrick BRADY, P.P., assisted by the Rev. Charles O'REILLY, P.P., uncle to the bride, Thomas SMYTH, Esq., of Carrickallen, to Margaret, daughter of Peter CAROLAN, Esq., of Enagh. (The following is a DEATH, but was not indicated as such.) On Ash Wednesday, at his mother's residence, Cavan, Master Geoffrey GARDE, son of the late Rev. William Garde, Wesleyan Minister.

    3. Listers; one of our number suggested that "The Quiet Man" might have been filmed on the Dingle Peninsula (sic). "Ryans Daughter" was filmed on the Dingle Peninsula". Both areas are "BEAUTIFUL when one actualy gets to drive through them, and take the time to see the country side which most tourists don't do, but travellers do! Robert Mitchum played the male lead in the picture, the female lead was played by a prominent British actress named Sarah Miles. 3. Listers Patricia Kostelnik writes that she knows of 2 films made in Cavan: 1.) The Playboys 2.) The Run of the Country This is, according to my wife's cousins, is correct. How do I know this? That's a good question and I'm glad that somebody asked it. According to my wife's cousin, Philomena Smith McCaffrey and her Auntie Maggie Smith The Play Boys was filmed almost in its entierty in the wide spot in the road known as "RED HILLS" which is where Auntie Maggie lives, and has lived since the year they discovered dirt, and where Philomena grew up before marrying Mr. McCaffrey. Many of the extras in both films were Smiths, all related to Auntie M. and Philomena. "The Run of the Country" was also filmed in the RED HILLS and Killebandrick area. Once again the Family Smith found gainful employment as extras in the film. Some of the extras also used in this film were the cows which belonged to one of the Smiths. I saw "The PLAYBOYS" on tape about two weeks after I returned from Ireland which included a 4 day visit to that Town in May of 1998. It was easy to recognize landmarks, even the telephone box outside the post office that I used to call home and approve my daughter's request to replace the Alternator on my Chevy Corsica. The main Pub in Red Hills is known as "THE PLAY BOYS, and is just opposite the long north leg of the village Triangle. Its owned by one of the SMITHS. The other Pub, located on the short south side of the triangle is also owned by Smith relatives. The "QUIET MAN" may have had its village scenes filmed in Cong, County Mayo, but John Ford selected outdoor sites from an area of about 36+ sauare miles around that village. I picked up that juicy tidbit from a young lady publican in the village of Carna, which is near Clifden. I do love my 15 minutes of fame! If you are familiar with Cavan town, you can't miss it. Lovely graveyard and very old, but also sadly neglected.
