    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Roll Call List
    2. Kimberley Walters
    3. Beattie Bell Drury Giles Hunter Leinster Lundie McElwaine Willis Sorry to be so late responding to the roll call - all my IRL-CAVAN e-mails got snagged and put into Junk mail and deleted for the last 2 weeks so I missed the announcement. Here goes: McELWAINE or McELWAIN - Greaghadossan Twld, Killinkere Parish, Cavan Andrew - late 1700's James - c. 1800, wife unknown Robert - b.c 1828, wife Eliza BEATTIE, b.c 1833 in Bailieborough - they had 12 children, most of whom we have some information on; there are a few we still need to explore and I will be happy to provide those details for anyone who can help us out. DRURY - Monaghanoose Twld, Bailieborough Parish, Cavan Henry - b.c 1810, wife Mary Ann MONTGOMERY William - b.c 1837, went to Melbourne, Australia, married and had family Henry - b.c 1838, wife Jane BELL b.c 1846 Mary Ann DRURY - b. March 26, 1866 - this is the only one of Henry and Jane's children that we have no information of beyond her baptism record from Trinity Pres Church in Bailieborough BEATTIE - Drumhilla, Knockbride Parish, Cavan Snell - b.c early 1800's - this is Eliza's father (see McElaine above) Charlotte - died in mid-1900's - had a store in Monaghan Anna - died in mid 1900's - ran a boarding house Bailieborough Willie and May - lived in Bailieborough in mid 1900's, Willie was an interior decorator Audrey - b.c 1947 Cynthia - b.c 1948 John - b.c 1950 Victor - b.c 1951 Linda - b.c 1956...............I would love to be able to find any of these children still alive to talk to - they are my only living link to this line. BELL - Uncertain location, but the logical thing is to look near the DRURY's as a start I have no names for Jane BELL's parents, but one of Jane's daughters emigrated to Ontario and married a Robert BELL in Mitchell, Ontario. I have information on this line, but only back to those who entered Canada - as Robert BELL's line also came from Cavan I am inclined to think that they were extended family of the original Jane BELL's line. Here are the names for the BELL's that settled in Mitchell, Ontario, all of whom were born in Cavan: Maxwell BELL - b. Dec. 23, 1823, wife Catherine VINCENT, b.c 1832 Robert BELL - b. April 1787, wife Elizabeth ANDERSON, b.c May 1792, they had 10 children: William BELL - b. Dec. 1, 1814 in Drumboon, Knocknashamar, Cavan, wife Jane McLAUGHLIN Ann Nancy BELL - b. Oct. 30, 1816, husband Henry GRAY Robert Thomas BELL - b. Aug 5, 1820 Maxwell BELL (see above) Elizabeth Ann BELL - b. Feb 11, 1825, husband William GRAY Sarah Jane BELL - Dec 5, 1826, husband Alex LINTON David BELL - b. May 1828 John BELL - b.c 1832 Maargaret Ann BELL - b.c 1832, husband John WATSON Alexander BELL - b. Aug 5, 1835........................we don't know if all these spouses were born in Ireland. We would love to find out about this BELL family from Cavan. LEINSTER or LINSTER - Bailieborough, Cavan John LEINSTER - b.c 1815, wife Mary Ann Montgomery DRURY (see above) - possibly after Henry's death? Mary Ann Leinster, b.c 1848, husband Henry KIRKLAND, married c. 1868 in Bailieborough they had nine children, some born in Bailieborough, then the family emigrated to Marrickville, NSW, Australia. I know some information on some of the children, but would love to connect with a living relative from there. Also looking for information on a George McELWAIN and Anne JOHNSTON family from the same area in Killinkere Other names that marry into the families are: Ireland: WILLIS LUNDIE GILES HUNTER - Joseph HUNTER b. 1820 in Lisnagiril, Killinkere, Cavan married Mary Anne McElwaine b.c 1829; marriage on April 6, 1848 in 1st Bailieborough Corglass. She was a sister to the Robert McElwaine above. Thanks to anyone who can help! Kimberley Walters walterskk@hotmail.com

    2. Thanks to all of your for the names of the films made in Cavan. I'll rent them now as we are traveling there this spring. Also, I'm not sure if anyone noticed my second question which was "What cemetery would the townlands of Drummolard and Drumformina in Killinkere Parish, church of Clanaphilip would people from that area have been buried." There is a small churchyard at Clanaphilip, but I couldn't find any family there. Thanks again.

    3. It is ok Maureen (Mo)...I happen to be a good friend of your cousin Dennis in Detroit!! He claims we are cousins...he says you had an aunt Catherine, I believe, Maguire. Any idea who she was? According to Dennis, the Fitzpatrick's of Glangelvin can see my Grandsmother's farm from their side of the hill which over looks Lough Allen. I almost went up to his Uncle's (your's too I assume) when we were there a couple of years ago, but we were running late, so we passed by his driveway....maybe we will make it this year. Dennis seems to think the uncles knew my uncle Vesty fairly well....who knows! Do you happen to have any idea who the Maguire aunt is? I can't seem to get an answer out of Dennis... When the Uncle from Dublin was visiting Dennis' father a year or two ago, he was suppose the ask him about the family and any ties. Maybe I will have more luck with the "other Mo". ;-) Best from Boston, Maureen Maloney At 09:37 AM 2/15/2004, you wrote: >Opps!!! There's another Maureen! 1. [IRL-CAVAN] ANGLO-CELT - OCTOBER 20, 1848 - COOTEHILL QUARTER SESSIONS
    2. ANGLO-CELT OCTOBER 20, 1848 COOTEHILL QUARTER SESSIONS Contempt of Court On Monday, Mr. James ARMSTRONG, attorney, applied to the court to have a man named Thomas OWENS committed for contempt, he having used threatening language to one of the practitioners, MR. James FORD. His Worship, after hearing the details of the case, ordered OWENS to be committed to Cavan gaol for one week. Another Case of Contempt. During the trial of a civil bill ejectment on Saturday last, the 14th instant, in which a Miss Isabella RUTHERFORD was plaintiff, and a man of the name of Patrick KINDELLAN defendant, and whilst Mr. Joseph DIXON, J.P., agent to the plaintiff, was being cross-examined by Mr. Edward M'GAURAN, defendants' attorney, the Barrister enquired from him if he had set him up a petition, and having been answered in the affirmative, his Worship said it was a gross libel on several gentlemen practitioners of the court, amongst whom he classed Mr. M'GUARAN, as defendant stated in it that he might not expect justice would awarded to him, as Tom OWENS was clerk to Mr. FORD, Hugh OWENS to Mr. ERSKINE, and James OWENS to Mr. M'GAURAN; on hearing which the latter gentleman declined to act futher on his behalf; and the Barrister having been informed by KINDELLAN that it was a man of the name of Sylvester CAMPAIGNE that drew up the petition for him, and that he did not instruct him to libel any of the attorneys of the court, his Worship directed one of the police to bring Sylvester CAMPAIGNE into court, who admitted that it was he had drawn up the petition for KINDELLEN, and the latter, on being sworn repeated his statement that he did not instruct CAMPAIGNE to libel or say anything against the attorneys in his petition when he employed him to draw it up for him, but merely to pray that his Worship would be good enough to give a favourable consideration when it came on to be tried; whereupon his Worship ordered CAMPAIGNE to be committed to the Bridewell of Cootehill for forty-eight hours for contempt of court. However, on it having been afterwards represented to him that CAMPAIGNE was drunk when he drew up the petition, his Worship ordered him to be discharged on Sunday morning. Another Case. On the trial of a civil bill process, on Monday evening, in which one Bridget PONSONBY was plaintiff, and James OWENS defendant, for £3 10s, the amount of an I.O.U. Thomas OWENS (father of the defendant) was brought from the bridewell to prove that his son was not of age when he signed it, and that it was passed to the paintiff to procure his (Thomas OWENS') discharge from the gaol of Cavan, where he was detained under a civil bill decree at the suit of the plaintiff. The Barrister informed Mr. Moutray ERSKINE, the defendant's attorney, that unless he would produce some other evidence to prove the minority of the defendant he would pronounce a decree in favour of the plaintiff, as he would not depend upon the testimony given by Thomas OWENS in favour of his son. ______________________________________________________________ County Cavan Newspaper Transcription Project

    3. Well, poor Denis sniffs too much glue... My grandmother was Maryanne McHugh (Mother McGovern Tullyveela, Corlough) she was from Derrynananta Glan. They gave a cousin the house -- Bea Curry (nee McHugh,Moneensauran), alive and wonderful -- for taking care of their mother. OK, as usual it gets complicated...my grandma & Bea are both 1st and 2nd cousins. Their mothers (McGoverns) were sisters from Tullyveela, Corlough. Both of their fathers names were James McHugh -- they were cousins. (1 from Moneensauran & 1 from Derrynananta). I don't have McGuires -- remember glue destroys brain cells. Denis and I might actually be cousins. Living with my grandmother in the early 1900s was Owen Fitzpatrick. He was the illegitimate child of Anne McHugh and ???Fitzpatrick -- Denis' uncle is a priest in Dublin -- he got it for us. My aunt, who grew-up with him, is 95 and won't spill the beans. Its been Denis, his dad Tom and my mission for years now. Tom (about 70) said that there was bad blood between our family -- and now he thinks this may have been it. Aunt Cassie mistakenly said she knew Annie -- then denied when I found out about Owen. I found an Owen McHugh -- and was so excited because I thought it was him (changed last name) alas was not him but is a cousin of my grandmother and Cassie. Their sister Bea went there when she first arrived in NYC. I had Master Genealogist program for years but they kept upgrading until I was losing my mind and I changed to FTM. Denis' gedcom was on the other program -- you have no idea how many times I wish I could see his. OK, so finally Maguires are in Denis' family (dementia). My family is McHugh and McGovern. I remember seeing the Vesty name somewhere years ago... Best from chilly NYC! 1. [IRL-CAVAN] Anglo Celt - Attempt at Murder - May 10, 1852
    2. Kay Stanton
    3. "The Anglo Celt" Cavan; Thursday, May 20, 1852 ATTEMPT TO UPSET THE RAILWAY TRAIN. - A diabolical attempt to upset the carriages on the Midland Great Western Railway, was made on Thursday near Athenry, by placing large stones to such a position on the line as would render it impossible for the train to have escaped; but, fortunately, the villain was detected almost in the act, and the obstruction removed before the arrival of the train. The fellow acknowledged the offence, but stated in extenuation that he was starving, and was anxious to et into jail. - Galway Vindicator. ATTEMPT AT MURDER. THE LAND QUESTION. - We regret to learn that upon Saturday evening an attempt was made to murder a man named Hugh LEONARD, who lives on the property of Lord Enniskillen, in the vicinity of Crum, and between that place and Enniskillen. The particulars of the case, as the (sic) have reached u, are shortly these:- A man of the name of LUNNY, who died some twelve months ago, occupied a farm of twenty acres on Lord Enniskillen's estate, at a place called Cornans; Lunny's own life was the last in his lease, and after his death his widow made an arrangement with the agent to continue in possession. Subsequently, a demand was made upon her to give up three acres of the best of the land; this she refused to do. The agent then took proceedings against her and, obtained a decree ejecting her altogether from the farm which ejection he executed on the Wednesday before last Easter Sunday. The agent would allow no compensation although Lunny had built a good house on the farm with suitable offices, standing him in upwards of £300; and the widow had the rent paid up punctually. This harsh conduct naturally gave great offence to the people of the neighbourhood. The farm was then given to Hugh LEONARD, the person whose life was assailed. On the evening named he was "taking up a gap," whe! n a tall man of sallow complexion and without whiskers came to him and asked if he wanted a servant "boy;" Leonard replied in the negative. The man next asked him to point out Mr. Ferguson's house; while Leonard was in the act of doing so, with his arm raised, the man fired a pistol at him, shattering his right shoulder, from which two balls have since been extracted. The man then coolly asked where did a Mr. Hanna live, as he had to pay him a "friendly visit also: gut Leonard fled without waiting for further "discourse." The assassin then walked down to the edge of Lough Erne, where some parties were waiting for him in a boat and who ferried him across. Several persons have been arrested on suspicion and lodged in Enniskillen gaol.

    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Anglo Celt - Rice Death, Cootehill Union - May 6, 1852
    2. Kay Stanton
    3. "The Anglo Celt" Cavan; Thursday, May 6, 1852 DEATH. Died on Tuesday, the 27th of April, at his residence in Nappagh, near Shercock, Thomas RICE, Esq., of that townland, deeply and universally regretted by all who knew him. Mr. Rice was a Poor-law Guardian of his native (the Drumgoon) electoral division of Cootehill union, from the formation of the union, until the dissolution of that board under the sealed order of the Poor-law Commissioners in 1848, in which capacity his untiring exertion on behalf of the suffering poor endeared him to that class, whilst his judicious discrimination and economical expediters of the rates equally endeared him to the ratepayers. As a landlord, he was kind, _______ to his tenantry, as a son, a husband a father, his conduct was always dutiful, affectionate, and edifying. The benevolence of his heart and the amiability of his nature won for him the respect and esteem of all his acquaintances. His tedious and lingering illness of more than two years' duration he bore with the fortitude a! nd pious resignation of a sincere and devout Christian; and, retiring from this world for a better - for a world of eternal bliss and happiness - he left no enemy behind him. His early decease leaves in the circle of his society a void which will not soon be filled up. He leaves, too, behind him an aged father, a disconsolate mother, a sorrowing widow, and six young children to deplore his early death. Three vessels, crowded with emigrants, left the port of Limerick this week for the United States. A large number of the Society of Friends have arrived in Dublin to attend the May meeting. Amongst them are more than usually numerous arrivals from America. 3. Including the correct spelling of Belturbet! BY ME! WEBBER -----Original Message----- From: Dick Webber [mailto:grappadw@bellsouth.net] Sent: Friday, February 13, 2004 8:14 PM To: John Kelly; Cavan County Rootsweb Cc: Jane Pearson Subject: Beturbet Catholic Church Before I forget, as a genealogist researcher, please correct the spelling of my WEBBER surname! That's mighty important stuff! Fr PJ Corrigan opened up his Church archives to us in May 1998. We did the research ourselves. I'm sure if you offer him some financial "appreciation", he or his successor will accommodate your USA CHURCH tax-deductible contribution! Not sure of his Church's name but assured if you write to the Roman Catholic Church in Belturbet, he or his replacement will get it! Wish you Luck! My question concerns your travels through BELTUBERT I believe my ancestors lived or near that location. They were Roman Catholic do you recall the name of the Catholic Church and or the name of the Priest there? The way you wrote of your search it seems the Priest m,ay be receptive to a request for baptismal records . Do you think he/they would be willing to do such a lookup? Thanks for taking the time to read this mail .
