Susan. Thank you so much for the information. I am fairly new to this and I was beginning to think I would never get anywhere with my Irish side of the family. I keep hearing that most of the Irish records were destroyed in a fire way back. I will certainly check out the sites you mentioned but I dont have very much to go on, its hard toknow if you have the right person. Joshua came to Australia in about 1859, so I dont think Ellis Island would help unless they have other countries passenger lists? Our family was not Catholic, so thats a start. Once again, thanks for taking the time. Hello, You might want to subscribe to the "Fermanagh-Gold" list. There is someone on that list named Wiggins that may be able to help you. Regards Pauline

Hi Evelyn, Thanks for the information. I don't have much to work with so I will give it a go. Diane, I should probably clarify - I don't think you should order directly from the web site (if that is how it is done, all automated). Look to see if there is a mailing address for the Center, and write a letter. Diane, No, I don't know how to learn the Parishes without paying, that is the down side. I like using it where I have the Parish records already, and as I start expanding into other relatives' branches, I can do a quick index search to at least give me some years to look at. The handwriting can be hard to read on some old records, so anything helps to ease the eye strain! The marriage records have also helped me determine whether or not there is one at all, if the bride was from a different parish, or if they just aren't to be found. So if you don't know what northern Irish county to look in, the web site can help. Some people who can afford it have been able to find their ancestors, so that is the up side. The only thing I can think of to help you save money is to order just one of the Thomas records - it should give you a Parish and then you can at least start somewhere. (But it won't hurt to ask, when ordering, if both Thomases are in the same parish, so that you won't have to go through this again. Or ask if all the Johnstons are in the same Parish. The response might say yes or no, or actually list the Parishes in their reply. You can hope anyway!) Best of luck, Susan Cavan records web site: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi.cfm?CountyID=4 On 1/27/07, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > Susan: > > Since you gave Joy such excellent advice, I'm going to try my luck. Diane, have you tried poking around the PRONI site? It is a huge site, supposedly (one of) the bible of Irish research, but I always have a hard time working my way through it--very frustrating, as I feel like the answers might be there, if only I could figure out how to reach it :). And Cavan is one of the Ulster counties. Nancy
Susan: Since you gave Joy such excellent advice, I'm going to try my luck. I believe the father of my Cavan greatgrandmother was born in Armagh, along with his three brothers. Their names were James, John, Thomas and Edward Johnston and they were Catholic. In the CSI index, I find 4 James Johnstons, 4 Johns, and 2 Thomases from around the right period (no Edwards). If I knew the parishes, I might be able to figure out which parish the three came from and order the microfilm. Paying 20 euro apiece for 10 records is beyond my budget. Can you suggest another way to simply learn the parishes? Diane
Susan, thanks for sending that White page form (which also takes you to all of the other forms). I went looking for them at www.ellisisland.org and darned if I could find any of them. I thought they were so helpful! Maybe I just missed them, but I'll mark this site for sure. Nancy
Joy, In addition to the other advice provided by the others, I have a few suggestions. I don't know what databases you have searched, but I sometimes like to look at the Griffiths Valuation online database (free) that sometimes can give me an idea where to look for a Surname, even if not everyone was listed in Griffiths: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php There are a few Samuel Wiggins listed. And there are a few Wiggins in County Cavan. Then I search a Records database of 11 counties (Cavan is one of them) that will show me if there are any Catholic Church records of a Surname available: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi_main.cfm#Counties They have 160 Wiggins Baptisms and 9 Marriages. 25 Baptisms are in County Cavan. (To find out more than county, name, and year, you have to pay for the records to be sent to you.) To search in County Cavan only, click here: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi.cfm?CountyID=4 I also like to post or search Message Boards for my Surname and County of interest. I noticed no one has posted about a Wiggins in Cavan, so you probably should post what you know there. Who knows, maybe a fellow descendant has also searched and not found a reference and decided not to post. Someone has to start! http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wiggins/mb.ashx Two people have posted the surname Wiggins on the County Cavan board, found here: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.cav.general/mb.ashx I also like to search Ellis Island (or Ancestry.com passenger lists) for my Surname of interest and County name. I always hope that a niece or nephew has come over to stay and lists their townland and father's name along with my relative or his family as the person they are coming to stay with. Use Stephen P. Morse's One-Step web page (white form) to search Ellis Island - found here: http://www.stevemorse.org/ [The Ellis Island search engine has missed too many of my relatives that Morse's web site found.] So these are just some places to give you further ideas. If you like what you see in the Griffiths list, your next step might be to look for church records on microfilm that would cover the townlands you are looking for. Not all parishes are microfilmed, however. And you have to know if they are Catholic or not. If you need further explanations, don't hesitate to ask. My cousin has asked me to see if I can find out a little about what sort of glass blower her great grandfather was. Charles SULLIVAN of Ireland married Helen Reilay/Reiley/Reulay in 1874 She is hoping he had a connection to Waterford Glass I think. Were there lots of places in Ireland where glassblowers were at work or could this occupation indicate where they lived? Any suggestions appreciated. Marg A of Oz
I am in the process of arranging a Trip to Ireland and of course I intend to spend some time in Co. Cavan. Can anyone who lives there or has been there reccommend places to stay. Thanks, Debbie
The Farnham Arms is an ok hotel in the middle of town, within walking distance of the library and the Genealogical center as well as the major churches and cathedral. It is clean and comfy-but on Friday nights the town is often filled with raucous young people-no threat, just lots of them and having had drink, most are noisy. The Kilmore is further out of town heading back to Dublin, clean, comfy , less noise. There is a guest house near the bus station called the Bridge Guest House-and my family has stayed there. It's clean, sparse and well priced. Good luck. There is a B& B out near the Kilmore called Roseborough-it is probably in the Ireland Golden pages (phone book). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deborah Annandale" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 26, 2007 5:32 PM Subject: [IRL-CAVAN] Trip to Cavan >I am in the process of arranging a Trip to Ireland and of course I intend >to spend some time in Co. HI! Either information has been lost regarding your family in Co. Cavan or as Karen said, they might be from a Cavan townland in another county. I too have looked in Cavan for Hunt & found nothing. Other counties with Cavan as a Townland are - ANTRIM, ARMAGH, LONGFORD, MAYO, MONAGHAN, DOWN, LEITRIM, LOUTH, DONEGAL & TYRONE. Good luck! I'm still searching. T'rah, Cynthia
