    3. Ellen--First of all, let me say thanks for doing these lookups. I'm sure all of us appreciate it. I am looking for John Lawrence Boylan who emigrated from County Cavan in 1833 and lived in Staten Island, New York until about 1860. He then moved to Illionois and farmed here until his death. His wife's name was Bridget Slattery and they married in New York, I'd appreciate anything that you could find. Again--my hat's off to you. 1. Re: [IRL-CAVAN] USA death certificates OFF TOPIC
    2. Meg Greenwood
    3. USA Death certificate acquisition depends on what state it is. Mandatory Registration began at statehood which varies for almost every state. Original 13 colonies go back to late 1700s but not sure if each and every one of them began registration the same year. To confuse matters more, every state 's registrations are a bit different. Basics are there, but other questions vary widely if any others were asked at all. Most certificates did ask parent's names, but if they were not known, it was simply written 'unknown'. Another problem in the US is that death certificates can sometimes only be obtained by members of the immediate family, depends on the state again. One volunteer at the FHC here had applied for the Death registration of her mother which occured perhaps 5y before the written request. They returned her application and asked for the mother to sign it first. Uhhhh, the worker wrote back and explained that it should have been obvious why the mother could not sign her own death certificate request. Again the document came back with pointed notations showing where her mother needed to SIGN the request. This time the volunteer just SIGNED the request with her mother's name. She promptly got the certificate. I made a request for a 1933 death certificate in Nevada, had to state my relationship to the deceased so I wrote 'Niece', it worked and I was sent the paper. The LDS church maintains a booklet of forms for every state in the union to request a certificate by post. If you need a JPG of any state's request form, write to me and I'll scan one and send it. Most states do have an online form for such requests. Google [for example] California death certificate application. The first hit was what you'd use to order. There are also guidelines for requests with pertinent years of availability. Good luck....you may need it ! 2. It all depends on the informant. If they know and want to give it to the person taking down the information. Sometimes they don't know, or only know of the person, like a friend or neighbor. An obit might have more if it was in the newspaper. Local societies will look for you, sometimes for free. Gary in CA USA

    3. Dia ghuit, a Hilda, I have had that first edition book for a long, long time. I refer it frequently, as it's contents, though only slightly genealogic, covers other scientific pursuits, as well as the earliest history of the Kingdom of Kerry, but when it comes to the List of sponsors/subscribers, what you read is all there is. The fact the Peter Murray was a veterinary surgeon should be of great help on learning much more about him; i.e., available newspaper reports; trades directories; minutes of veterinary associations, the college where he studied, etc., Sorry, Hilda, that I can't add 'flesh to the skeleton', If I could ,I would. **** Replies to the List Only, Please ***** Pádraig Mór, An Sean Gabhar ----- Original Message ----- From: Hilda Cooper To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 9:56 PM Subject: [IRL-CAVAN] Fw: [IRELAND] Fw: PETER MURRAY, VET SURGEON, TRALEE Hello Padraig, I think I might have sent this message to you to the wrong email address. 3. CAVAN WEEKLY NEWS, Friday, November 24, 1876 DEATH. CLIFFORD - October 21, at Almora, India, of Jungle Fever, R. H. Clifford, M.B.S., Collector in the Azamgher District of Bengal, aged 45. He had completed his full 20 years' service as Resident Magistrate in India, and could have now retired on the largest pension granted to any Civil Servant. A LIFE SAVED AND A LIFE LOST. - On Monday afternoon a little boy named Andrew GRAHAM, 5 years old, residing at 3 Fitzwilliam-lane, Dublin, accidentally fell into the lock of the canal at Mount-street Bridge. A man named James BEGGS, aged 50 years, jumped in, and endeavoured to save the child, but became exhausted in vain attempts to bring him to the bank. Andrew KAVANAGH, the lock keeper, seeing the little boy and the man Beggs struggling in the water, came to their assistance, and succeeded in bringing the child to the bank, but Beggs sank and was drowned. The child was removed to Sir Patrick Dunn's Hospital, and was subsequently sent home, being nothing the worse. Beggs' body was recovered after a considerable time, by dragging the canal, and was removed his late residence. THE KNIFE IN WATERFORD. - At the Waterford Police-court on Monday morning Patrick WALSHE was charged with having stabbed a man named James CONWAY in the hand and thumb on Saturday night. It appeared that they were both under the influence of drink at the time of the affray, but Walshe had threatened before that he would "do for" Conway. Dr. BROWNE, who dressed the injured man's wounds, stated that if the cut on the hand had been an inch further back the prisoner would have kept his word and really "done for" Conway. Walshe was sent for trial at quarter sessions. At the same court Michael MURRAY was charged with stabbing a man named T. CATHRON in the face, at Ferrybank, on Sunday evening. They had some altercation about a woman, in the course of which Murray inflicted a wound with a penknife, which he was seen to throw away immediately afater. He also was sent for trial at quarter sessions. (County Cavan Newspaper Transcription Project)
