    3. Hi Jane, As much as I would like to, I don't come to Dunedin very often. Twice from memory in all the years I have been in New Zealand. I am really surprised to find out how the Databases the different FHL centres hold, differ. I usually go to the Upper Hutt one. They have Indexes of Irish Death from 1864 to about 1922 I think and also Indexes to Griffith's Valuation (Ireland) I must hop into the Centre in Wellington one day and see what they have got there. It must be disappointing for you that they are thinking of closing in Dunedin. 3. Hi Meg, I am reasonably new to this thread. I thought I was on a winner here with this site you suggested, but I find myself going around in circles as I usually do with Irish sites. Your instructions were wonderfully clear but I think I must be doing something wrong. I am ok up to the step where you click "Civil Registration". Most of the dates here are out of the range I think I need, but I clicked on the fourth one down "Death records of Ireland 1864-70 with index of deaths 1864-1921" which may include the death of the person I need. This gives me a page titled Family History Library Catalog.I click "View Film Notes " and get a page with two columns. One headed "Note" with listings for Index of deaths year by year and the other headed "Location Film" with FHL BRITISH Film and various numbers listed. Where do I go from here. I can't get a page where I can actually see a film. Am I supposed to or am I doing something wrong? Sorry to be such a bother. 3. Dear Meg, This is absolutely wonderful. Although volunteers at the FHC are most helpful, information about Irish Research is often a bit of a Mystery. I have already learned a lot from your recent Emails and I am certain everybody on the list will agree. Thank you very, very much. This is a whole new approach to finding the films one is looking for. If films are ordered here in New Zealand your Local Centre will keep them for you for about 3 weeks before they are sent back to "whereever" they get them from. I was just going to order an Index for Marriages for the 3rd time, but perhaps I won't now! The good thing about the Marriage Indexes is of course: if you know the name of both Groom and Bride they should both be listed with the same Volume and Page Numbers. Happy Easter and kind regards Inga. 3. Hi Cathy The links for databases as below are:- www.irishgenealogy.ie (use the free search, 3.6 million records, link in green banner at top of page) www.ulsterancestry.com Useful tools, but probably most expensive way to purchase certificate. Within the years of statutory registration the copy of the entry in the register is much more personal, having original signatures, (except marriage, where these will be in the parish book), and less expensive than the official extracted information on certificate dated "today". The first link is good in the fact that it appears to have indexed events before 1864, and having found my ggrandfather's death in 1895, (FHC Death Index) age 50, was able to then find an 1845 entry for - hopefully - his baptism. 3. Dear Meg, That is a very generous offer. I think you will have a busy month ahead!! The LDS Centre I go to has the Death Indexes but one has to order Indexes for Birth and Marriages. 3. Also thank you from me, Ava. I "found" my husbands grandmother and have sent for her Birth Certificate, hoping to find where her Fathers family came from in Ireland. Best wishes Inga. ----- Original Message ----- From: "AC" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 30, 2007 7:40 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-CAVAN] Online Irish Databases Hi Jean and Karen A couple of sites with index databases for Ireland below. The first has Cavan birth records (I've found my family names there,) www.irishgenealogy.ie (free search) and the 2nd link covers other Ulster Counties, but not Cavan, www.emeraldancestors.com and both are definitely worth checking if you are looking in the areas they cover. I don't know the scope of records they each offer, but worth a look anyway. Best Wishes Ava Connelly -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. 3. Dear Ava, Would you mind posting those links again? I just joined the email list and seem to have missed the message. Thanks, Cathy AC <[email protected]> wrote: Hello again, I'm sorry for any misunderstanding, and hope you didn't spend too much money, I offered the links as a means of narrowing the field. May I add that I used the databases as an overview, and then visited Family History Centre to obtain more specific register details from the Index films, I have not ordered certificates as yet, but in the near future, armed with the registration info, Quarter, Volume and page number, from the indexes at FHC, I will purchase from GRO in Dublin. Price for this is,(I think), 4 Euros. (Unless Meg can suggest a better method?). Of course as Meg points out if the parish register was filmed FHC can order the film and certificate can then be printed out from that if facilities allow. Rather expensive, but will give me a lead as to the name of her father and hopefully pinpoint what town she is from in Tyrone. Thanks again Priscilla Researching Nelson, Park Lee from Tyrone

Karen Ann Blackwell's birth date certainly predates the keeping of civil records. One possibility chance is to find someone who can check church records for baptisms or registrations of births--if you know which denomination. Some of us have found the Cavan Research Centre to be very helpful; that web site is _http://www.irish-roots.net/cavan.asp_ (http://www.irish-roots.net/cavan.asp) . Be prepared for some months for the Centre to start going on your file; very busy, but do a good job. There is a Genuki web site which seems well maintained and provides links to other sites: _http://www.sierratel.com/colinf/genuki/CAV/index.html_ (http://www.sierratel.com/colinf/genuki/CAV/index.html) If you are just starting Irish research, you might also have a look at the LDS Family History web site, go to the Library, and check the Catalog for location Bailieborough in County Cavan _http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp) . That has been useful. Records in Cavan are irregular for various reasons--this takes tenacity. Regards. Dan Wagner ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [IRL-CAVAN] Registration INDEX films for Ireland
    2. Meg Greenwood
    3. Have noticed this thread and may be of some assistance. The FHC nearest me has the INDEX films for births, marriages and deaths in Ireland from 1864-1958. Some gaps here and there but most films are here for most of Ireland [not Northern I. after 1922]. These are the same films it was suggested you rent. If Cathy or anyone else wishes me to check the INDEX films for the Registration data [year, name, surname, district of registration, volume, page # and nothing else, no parents, no residence, no ages except for deaths], you will need to send me a NAME, a SURNAME, a YEAR and an expected PARISH or DISTRICT. At least a COUNTY. The Registration districts for Cavan are Baillieborough, Bawnboy, Cavan, Coothill, Enniskillen, Granard, Kells and Oldcastle. Am told they are generally the same as the Poor Law Unions. I can't do a lookup without a YEAR to begin the search. The films are constructed year by year, not surname. Beginning 1864 as the books closed on Dec 31, all the names were gathered at the Registrar's offices and sent in for publication in full years worth of names for the entire country of Ireland that were Registered. Beginning 1878, the names were sent in by quarter years [3m spans] so there are 4 quarters of names per year. Each quarter year's books are alphabetized by surname just like the full years before [meaning its 4 times the work to look up names]. The INDEX covers all counties in Ireland. One bonus is for Church of Ireland is that marriages were recorded for that faith beginning 1845. It was the official religion for Ireland, so only those marriages were required to be recorded. Quaker, U.P., Roman Catholic and all others were not officially recorded, they were in books kept at the local church. Only a few of these books were filmed. 1864 marked the beginning of mandatory Civil Registration meaning all births, marriages and deaths were by law recorded at the local Registration Office. To find out if any of your parish of interest's records were filmed, go here and select KEYWORD SEARCH. Enter the word PAROCHIAL IRELAND to see if its records were filmed. There will be 462 returns. You could enter the parish name with it...but spelling must be exact which is a problem. Just scroll through the returns and you'll see all the films the FHC's have for Roman Catholic births, etc in Ireland. The FHC in my city is 8 minutes from my house, I work there as a non-churchmember on Wednesday evenings. The building has been closed 2 weeks for remodeling, it just opened up this past week, construction debris is still everywhere but we are open. I enjoy doing lookups but please send me as much information as you can [not a GEDCOM] and understand that without a year or brief span of years, I'll not be able to find what you seek. If you are asking about a very common surname [MURPHY, O'CONNER, O'DONNELL], I'll be happy to send 'your' Patrick or Mary....along with dozens of others and let you scratch your head]. Won't do any lookups on the GAUGHRAN and COLLINS one until I hear details of what is needed......Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA >
