Thanks Susan. I've written to the Mass. Archives in the past & have had no luck with finding their marriage record or their first daughter's (Marguerite) birth record. Thanks for having a look to validate this. Mary's husband Winfield is a whole other mystery & I often wonder if he/they were running away from something, but he's not connected to Cavan so I'll spare you the details. It's possible that W. A. Davis could be him, but like you say it is hard to tell. I'll have to keep that in mind and see if I can make something of it in the future. Sometimes the smallest clues eventually help unravel a mystery, so I appreciate your time on this. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Susan Daily Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2007 5:51 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-CAVAN] CONNELL and BROGAN I tried to find their daughter, Marguerite W. Farther back, though, I shouldn't rule out finding records under the O'Connell name -- if I ever find anything at all! :-) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Dennis Reiley Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2007 7:47 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-CAVAN] CONNELL and BROGAN Actually Nancy both names are correct as they are the same. The British spent considerable efforts eliminating the the "O" from names to make them sound more British. The "O" - along with the Gaelic language - has been making a comeback since Ireland's independence. Those prefaces found in most Celtic names means you search with and without. That includes "Mc", "Mac", etc. - Connell, Neil, Reilly, etc. is the critical part of the name. Hi everyone, I just joined the list. After years of searching for my great grandmother, who I was told was named Mary Marguerite O'Connell, it is looking like I had the name wrong all along and that it's actually CONNELL. I now have a blend of family tales & fact, but starting more and more to supplement with official records thanks to the clues provided by those family stories. SO, I am hoping to learn about Mary's parents and siblings. I have no confirmed information about Mary from the time of her birth in Cavan (about 1884) through the 1910 US census when she makes her first official appearance. Though I haven't untangled all of the fact & fiction, the details I do have are below. If anything sounds even remotely familiar, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks! Nancy ======================================================== * = Per family stories; no record has been found. o Mary Marguerite CONNELL, born August 15, 1884 in County Cavan (possibly Kells?)* o Parents: Daniel CONNELL and Rose BROGAN (per brother James' death certificate) o Siblings: Frank*, Peter*, Rose*, Elizabeth*, James o Emigration: 1901 to St. Cloud, Minnesota via Montreal and formerly of Cloughbally (per Canadian Border Crossing record; needs confirmation to prove a match) o Reason for Emigration: to train to be a nurse* o Spouse: Winfield DAVIS (aka CORBETT); married about 1904 possibly in Charlestown, Massachusetts* o Occupation: Nurse in Boston area after leaving St. Cloud; worked for Dr. Ring* o Other Residences: Pike and Lincoln, New Hampshire (per 1910-30 census records) o Death: April 25, 1941 in Lincoln, New Hampshire (per death certificate) o James CONNELL (Mary's brother) and his niece Margaret McELROY, drowned in West Newton, Massachusetts July 17, 1924.
