Email this morning from : Ippm2003@yahoo.ca Hello Michael, My husband and I met you last May in the Carlow Library. We were visiting from Canada and looking for information about the Crawfords of Tullow. You might remember that George Crawford was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary and you subsequently sent me a newspaper article about him. Just to refresh your memory: My great great grandfather, William Crawford married in Ottawa, Canada, 26 May 1874 at the age of 28. His marriage record says that he came from "Ireland" and that his parents were George and Margaret Crawford. Family lore is that he came from Carlow, Ireland. Crawford appears to be a somewhat uncommon name in Carlow. In the Griffith's Valuation (1852) there is only one George Crawford in Carlow, living at The Course, Parish of Tullowphelim, Townland of Tullow. A George Crawford died in Tullow on November 21, 1885. His death certificate indicates that he was on a police pension. There is a service record for a George Crawford in the Royal Irish Constabulary which states that his home county was Cavan and that he was posted to Kildare and then Carlow. According to his service record, this George retired from the RIC in 1862 after 25 1/2 years of service. He received a pension. In Slater's Directory of 1870 for Tullow and the Village of Ballon, there is a George Crawford listed as a provision dealer, Market Square, Tullow. This may be the same George, now in a retirement occupation. There is a burial record for a Margaret Crawford (April 18, 1886) in Tullow. I have not been able to find a copy of her death certificate at the Office of the Registrar General. According to George's RIC record his (unnamed) wife came from Kildare. George's police record states that he was transferred to County Carlow in August of 1843. My great great grandfather William Crawford was born about 1846/47. I have not been able to find a record of the birth of William or any siblings in County Carlow. I wonder if William's baptism might be recorded in the Carlow Presbyterian or Methodist records (or possibly some other Protestant group)? You mentioned that you had a transcript of some of these records that your uncle had made. Could I prevail upon you to have a look? This is a brick wall that seems almost unsurmountable and I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me. Marilyn Lappi Edmonton, Alberta Canada
Marilyn There are quite a few Crawfords in Ireland but it is essentially a Scottish name. The son of a Co Wicklow family that I am researching married in Wicklow in 1871 a lass named Turnbull whose father was serving in the Wicklow Rifles. The whole family had come from Roxburgh in Scotland where the father had been demobbed from a British regiment. So, I am just offering the possibility that your George Crawford "may" have been recruited to the Irish Constabulary from Scotland.
