    1. [IRL-CARLOW] A question for Turtle
    2. Kaye Cole
    3. Hi Turtle, I've just begun writing about Edmund Gardiner Fishbourne and thought you might be able to answer a question for me. Edmund entered the Navy in 1824, and at this time patronage was extremely important. Who among your illustrious forebears would have been a likely patron to recommend him? Was there anyone from your lot actually in the Navy at this time? I'm aware of Edmund's later letter re the Order of the Bath, which he did finally get in 1859. Now I know more about the dreadful Niger expedition I think he well deserved the decoration! I'll be grateful for anything you can tell me Regards Kaye Cole

    3. Hi Kaye, Thanks for this. The Niger was indeed a wretched affair but I'm afraid I am not sure who - if any - of my forebears were Captain Fishbourne's patrons. Is there a suggestion that one of them was ... Captain McClintock Bunbury, whom he wrote to in 1850s, was a 24 year old Lieutenant in 1824 so not sure how much influence he'd have had then .... On 11th September 1823, Lt McCB was appointed to the Tamar 26 under Captain Sir James John Gordon Bremer, fitting in the River Thames. Five months later, on 2nd February 1824, he was appointed to the Samarang 28, on which ship he would serve for much of his remaining naval career. There's a vague possibility that Captain McCB himself secured patronage through his connections to the naval family of Rowley (http://www.turtlebunbury.com/family/bunburyfamily_related/bunbury_family_related_campbell.html) but I'm afraid I know no more of Fishbourne's early years ...
