I usually don't like to comment on political or religious matters online but .... Okay, first of all I'm Catholic so this isn't prejudice but the notion that a semi-starved person in a workhouse during the height of the potato famine would have to abstain from milk for Good Friday by request of his faith's authority .... damn that's upsetting. Church Law? I'll bet the chaplain sat down to a nice meal that evening. Minutes of Carlow Workhouse 1857. Resolved : That the Roman Catholic chaplain applied to the Board to give the Roman Catholic paupers a substitute for milk with their breakfast tomorrow "being Good Friday" as they are required to observe Fast and Abstinence by church law...The Board acceded to his wishes and ordered the Master of the Workhouse to provide water as a substitute instead of milk. =======================================
