    3. Tom, Oopsies, lost the last one.  I remember as a child being told to abstain on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday, and we did as a family and a school. My wife and I still observe the rules, but we are not saints. >From what I have learned, Carlow was not touched by the potato famine as other counties because they grew beets instead of potatoes. I could be wrong about this. I am sure that most priests were pious, and observed the Lenten way. I doubt the workhouse chaplain was a fraud, but he could have been. Okay, first of all I'm Catholic so this isn't prejudice but the notion that a semi-starved person in a workhouse during the height of the potato famine would have to abstain from milk for Good Friday by request of his faith's authority .... damn that's upsetting.  Church Law?  I'll bet the chaplain sat down to a nice meal that evening. 3. As a child in Philadelphia during the Depression, my mother used to go over to the parish rectory where her grandmother cooked - she would give my Mom bits of extra food and table scraps from the priests so that the family could eat. Feast or famine...the priests didn't go without food or liquor. So much for a vow of poverty... 3. 1.Diocesan priests - Diocesan priests commit their lives to serving the people of a diocese, which is a church administrative region, and typically work in parishes, schools, or other Catholic institutions as assigned by the bishop of their diocese. Diocesan priests take a vow of celibacy and obedience. 2.Religious priests - Religious priests belong to a religious order such as the Dominicans, Franciscans, and Jesuits. Religious priests get their direction from their superiors within their religious order. Religious orders typically specialize in teaching or performing missionary work. In addition to taking a vow of celibacy and obedience, religious priests take a vow of poverty. Cheers Cara

    3. I definitely don't want to be the start of any anti-religious tirade on any faith. That's not the purpose of this forum but I think that what we can learn from records like this is that neither religion had any monopoly on power grasping, evil intentions or saintly behaviour. It doesn't seem to me very likely that the workhouse chaplain was on the saintly side. That's all. This is a new notion to me that Carlow did not suffer greatly from the potato famine. Does anyone have any Carlow-specific information about that? >From what I understood the workhouse in Carlow was packed full for some reason.
