    1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Rev. PETER NOLAN of BALLON/KILLANE + Thanks to ALAN McGRATH
    2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Hi all! I wish to add my thanks for the fine work done by Alan McGrath which is sure to open doors for many family researchers for years to come. Now, picking on my last posting regarding Rev. Peter Nolan here are a few more details. In the "History of Ballon and Rathoe, Vol. 1" y Fr. Peadar Mac Suibhne [Fr. Peter Swayne] we find on page 112 information on the Killane Nolans and a Rev. Peter Nolan. The information in the book was based upon interviews conducted by Fr. MacSuibhne in the 1950-1970 timeframe and, at times, appears to be almost verbatim as is the case for the reference paragraph given at the end of this note. Based upon my research, I have identified at least 3 Nolan lines (Shangarry, Kilknock and Ballykealey Nolan lines) in the Killane area and, at times, it is hard to know to which Nolan line Fr. MacSuibne is refering in his History of Ballon. That is pretty much the case for the reference paragraph from page 112 reproduced at the end of this note. You will find in it mention of Rev. Peter Nolan towards the end of page 112 where it is said that he was "buried at the back of the sacristy in Ballon" which, now after the last church renovations, I would take to be just below the church window facing the cemetery. I have been there and the writing on the large tomb found there has long vanished but I believe that it was the one alluded to by Fr. MacSuibhne. If anyone in the Ballon area or in the Carlow area in general knows anything about the tomb of Rev. Peter Nolan in the old Ballon cemetery I would really appreciate it or better still I would appreciate knowing who his parents were. He was buried in what seems to have been an elaborate tomb (sometime after 1832) but yet no one seems to remember him anymore. In any case, without further ado, here is the reference paragraph from Fr. MacSuibhne's book: "Pg. 112 - KILLANE NOLANS Nolans, Killane, came from Myshall. Hugh Nolans, the Plucker's grandmother, was Miss Brophy, Shankill, the mother of Father Nolan, who is buried in Myshall; he was off the mission. Two Frs. Nolan, Fr. Tom, Abbeyleix, and Fr. John, P.P., Kildare, were evicted from Lisgarven and went to Ballinrush. Ter Cummin's people came from Kellistown. They were called Cummins. Cummin's related to Nolans, Burrin Side, Mrs. Nolan, Muinebheag. The Nolans related to Cummins were most likely at Cranaha, a big place, but a long way down the fields. The gate is at the Fenagh side of Morrisseys, and at Morrissey's side of the road. A very old family. They left the place to a niece who married a Ryan. They sold it out. There was a Miss Lalor there. These Nolans were also related to the Kilkeen Nolans. The Kilkeen gardens are there still, at the back of Ballon Hill. They were evicted from the McCormacks where Simon Maher has the land. Ter Byrne, uncle of Ter Cummins, came from Acann and got into the place. The Kilkeens owned a good deal of Leckys and were evicted. Fr. Peter Nolan, who is buried at the back of the sacristy in Ballon, is of this family." If anyone has information on the persons referenced (e.g. "Hugh Nola, the Plucker"; "Nolan, Burrin side) or the locations mentioned (e.g. "gate ... at the Fenagh side of Morrisseys", "Kilkeen gardens", "the McCormacks where Simon Maher has the land") I would appreciate them getting in touch with me so that I may be able to "decipher" the above paragraph from Fr. MacSuibhne's book. In my opinion, it holds a lot of information but strongly tied to a particular time, place, social context and use of language.
