>From circa 600 there was St. Mary's Abbey on Castle Hill in the area adjoining where the Boot Factory was built in 1906.... ...the present-day St. Mary's Church is the Church of Ireland building alongside Castle Street........... from Penal times there was a Roman Catholic chapel also called St. Mary's near Shirley's Garage on the Dublin Road ........in 1787 Dean Staunton built a church , again known as St. Mary's, where the Cathedral now stands............in 1828 the foundation stone was laid for the Cathedral.......part of the old Staunton church was incorporated into the new structure........ I recall Aidan Murray telling us that the Bishop's seat was in Tullow prior to that,........... where the bishop's seat is placed is called "cathedral" so I guess Tullow church would have been Cathedral up to 1833!... ...Carlow Cathedral opened 1833......
