Hi Pat, I am in Dublin as we speak and am heading to Co. Carlow tomorrow. I will be able to give you better advice in a few days. I think there is a really neat place to stay right in Borris. It is fairly new and wasn't there when we were here in 2001. We are staying at the Waterside Guesthouse just a couple of miles south and across the River Barrow in Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny. It is the same place we stayed on our last trip. I have ancestors from both sides of the river. As for the Borris Parish Records, several years ago I wrote a personal letter to the parish priest and told him the name of the person I was trying to find. All I had was her name and the fact that she had to have been born early enough to have married my ancestor, Patrick Joyce in 1804. I enclosed a small check as a donation in honor of my ancestors. Within a week or two, the priest sent me the exact record I needed with her date of baptism, names of parents including her mother's maiden name, and the names of her sponsors. The priest at that time was Father Nicholas Moore, but I don't know if he is still there. You should be able to go onto the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin website to find the name of the present priest at Sacred Heart Church in Borris. I'll let you know more about places to stay in a few days. This includes Roscommon Co. as well as Borris in County Carlow. Several questions from my fellow listers. what is the appropriate protocol to ask for records from the Parish Priest? Call ahead? Write ahead? Is there a physical central repository of data that I can visit in the county? ( I appreciate that much of it is online, thanks to you guys..) Will gladly take any recommendations for 'places to stay', preferably B&B style, in the Borris area.
