    3. In the aftermath of the Battle of Carlow in May 1798, Michael Brennan of Arles is seeking a Protection in accordance with a Proclamation drawn up by Magistrate Benjamin Bunbury. Extract from "Protections" Journal of Dudley Hill, under-Sheriff . Michael Brennan, of Arles, Labourer, had a Pike. Was to be a Captain. Did not go to the Battle of Carlow.. Sworn by Michael Headon at Cockpit Lane in Carlow. (Note added 2010 by Michael Purcell. Michael Brennan may have been part of the large group from Queen's County who intended to take part in the Battle but when they saw that Graigue Bridge was manned by the Durham Fencibles, armed with Grapeshot, they were ordered to retreat. The group then advanced on Ballickmoyler. Tom La Porte take note.)

    3. Note taken. Thanks Mick. Is this our Michael Brennan's ancestor Michael Brennan? Supposedly there were more lives lost at Ballickmoyler and at Providence Lodge when the rebels arrived there but I have never seen any reference to any legal actions which may have resulted other than the claims for compensation for the houses which were burned down that day. I don't suppose anything will turn up in the Carlow papers though as I believe there was also a court in Ballickmoyler. I wonder where those papers ended up?
