    1. [IRL-CARLOW] O'Neill birth mystery

    3. I am hoping that a knowledgeable Canadian will be able to help me with my query. My great-grandfather James Neil (O'Neill in Australia) was born in Newtown. co Carlow in 1859 and he married Anne Lowry in 1883 in Bagenalstown and emigrated to Australia in 1885. James' father was James Neil, a stonemason and his mother was Mary Lalor (Lawler). His sister Elizabeth, born around 1866, also came to Australia. I have just received her marriage certificate and it says that she was born in Albany, Canada. On the birth certificate for her second child, it states the same. I have looked for Albany and found a Fort Albany but can't tell if this is a likely port or not or could they have meant Albany, New York? If the family left Ireland to go to Canada, what is the likely port through which they would have entered? How can I find indexes of births for Canadian provinces? Of course, the Canadian birth could also have been a fib for one reason or another. Many thanks for any help. Cathie
