Carlow @1804, emigrated to Peterborough Canada about 1830. May have brother Edward born about 1795 who lived in Ballykealey Townland in 1820's and also emigrated to Peterborough about 1834. 3. Maribeth, Meg, : What I do know about -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (1) James Nowlan/Nolan b.c. 1803 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1830 : Peterborough & Waterloo Counties, ON James Nolan (c1803 - 1873) - from Co. Carlow, Ireland Catherine McNertney (c1804 - 1883) - from Ireland Children: Anthony (1829), Mary Ann (1831), Martin (1836), Ellen (1838), James (1840) and Michael Hugh (1843) and -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2) Edward Nowlan/ Nolan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1834 : Douro township, Peterborough Co., ON Edward Nolan (???? - ????) - from Co. Carlow, IE Mary Eustace (???? - ????) - from Ireland Children: Bridget (1819), Martin (1821), Patrick (1822), Laughlin (1827), James (1830), Thomas (1831), John (1834) and Mary Anne (1839) is found in more detail at my website on the following page: http://www.nolanfamilies.org/index.php?country_id=5&region_id=7 Edward's family was born mostly in the Ballon area and from RC church records it is evident that they had a connection to the Ballykealey and Cunnaberry townlands. As for James' family it is hard to be specific. James only married when he was in Canada. However, it is interesting to note that the first name Martin appears in both families and that they both initially settled in the Peterborough area. !!!Another interesting fact is the first name "Michael Hugh" as a child's name for James. In my research I have uncovered two brothers Michael (c1787) and Hugh (c1795) went to New Brunswick around 1833 and worked in the forest there. They died in the late 1850s and are buried in the Grande-Aldouane cemetery, near Richibucto, NB (where my ancestor Peter married in 1828). I have no definite proof of this yet but I believe that the Michael and Hugh mentioned above, known to have been brothers (and who, in their wills both generously contributed to the building of an RC church in Richibucto), were sons of Michael and Judith Nowlan of Ballinvally. What I know of the couple Michael and Judith Nowlan of Ballinvally is the following:l Hugh Nowlan baptized March 1795; parents: Michael & Judith Nowlan godparents: Bryan Brien, Ann Brien; (husband and wife; Ann believed to have been a Nowlan of Ballinvally) Ballinvally ++++++++++ There is also another baptismal entry of possible interest, as follows: 1793 02 14 Peter Nowlan, Parents: Michael & Judith* Nowlan godparents: James Brennan, Ann* Nowlan; Killane !!!However, it would appear that the first names above of the mother* and godmother* were inadvertantly interchanged in the record. Based upon an extensive analysis of all records 1782-1795, in my opinion the record should read: 1793 02 14 Peter Nowlan, Parents: Michael & Ann* Nowlan godparents: James Brennan, Judith* Nowlan; Killane. +++++++++ To summarize, it is possible that the James Nolan of Peterborough may have been a son of Michael and Judith Nowlan of Ballinvally who had a son named Hugh, a presumed brother to James, in 1795. It is also possible that the latter Judith was the "Judith Cullen married to a Nolan" who was supposedly an aunt of Cardinal Cullen and somehow related to Bishop Nolan of Tullow. If this is true then the "Hugh" honoured here would have been Hugh Cullen of Burrenside, the ancestor of the Ballon -area Cullen. The fact that a Michael Nowlan of Killane, possibly Michael Sr., was buried July 19, 1832, may also be relevant to the stories of James in Peterborough in 1833 and Michael and Hugh in New Brunswick in 1833.
