Roger _ I have just noticed your message and I presume that you know that the list which you give is a little different from Bill Dillon's report on those headstones in Kellistown. As far as I know you have all the texts that I have but just in case you missed out on anything I will clarify ! In No. 11 on his list which is your second one - Edward and James Nowlan; he has the age as 39 years whereas the journal has it as 30. The text for the John Hanlon stone is as follows on his list "Here lieth the Remains of John Hanlon of Laughe and his wife Alice Hanlon, alias Kehoe, the latter Departed this life February 24th 1788 @ --- yrs, the former July 29th 1780 aged 70 years." Let me know if you want me to go there and check these out - or maybe you already have done so. I hope you are both well - have you another visit to Carlow planned ? Ronnie -----Original Message----- From: irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Roger Nowlan Sent: 02 July 2010 19:15 To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Cc: Susie Warren Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Journal for the Memorials of the Dead - NOWLANs in KELLISTOWN Susie, I want to thank you for your transcriptions from the JPMD. In searching through them I found what I believe could be a link to my Nowlan family and I wanted to share my finding with the others on the list. In the Kellistown cemetery transcriptions I found the following: ++++++++++++++++++++++ 'The next five monuments are in the Nave of the old Priory':- _____ "This stone Erected by EDWARD NOWLAN (- -) Memory of his Wife BRIDGET NOWLAN who Departed this life 16th of April 1700 aged 52 years also two of their children Lord have mercy on their souls Amen." _____ I.H.S. "This stone erected by EDWARD and JAMES NOWLAN of Shrule near Carlow in memory of their Father and Mother also CATHERINE the Beloved and Affectionate wife of JAMES NOWLAN who departed this life the First of March 1785 aged 30 years She was Sanctified with Every virtue and after a tedious illness was called to receive her reward in a better world Amen." ______ "Here lieth the body of THOMAS HANLON who departed this life September the 6th 1786 aged 24 years. ______ "Here lies the Remains of JOHN HANLON of Laughe and his Wife ALICE HANLON alias KEHOE, the latter Departed this life February 24th 1789 aged 70 years. May they rest in Peace Amen." ______ "This stone was Erected by Mrs. ANNE KINSELLA of Upper Church Street in the City of Dublin Baker to the memory of her Beloved Husband PATRICK KINSELLA and their child who Departed this life the 27 of Novr 1820 aged 36 years." JPMD, Vol V, 1901 - 1903 , CARLOW, Page 151. ___ The details above have been transcribed from the Journals titled, "Journal for the Memorials of the Dead" which can be found at County Carlow Library, Tullow Street, Carlow, Co Carlow IRELAND. +++++++++++++++++++++ The second transcription of particular interest as it could fit with what I know of my ancestor James Nowland and hence opens up a new avenue of research. My ancestor James Nowland married Mary Clowry (alias Shortall) in 1793 in Ballon. The witnesses were a James Brennan and a Maurice Dawson. Mary had previously been married to a James Clowry in 1784 suggesting that James might also have been married earlier. The James Nowlan Sr. mentioned on the tombstone above married someone named Catherine sometime before 1785 and had at least two sons James Jr. and Edward. I don't know when the tombstone was erected but, if this James Sr. would be my ancestor, then James Jr. would have been from a first marriage for James and Edward from a second marriage namely to Mary Shortall who we know had at least two sons, Peter (c1796) and Edward (c1798). If the James Sr. mentioned on the tombstone is my ancestor then the tombstone would have been erected sometime in the early 1800s, recall that the son Edward in my family was only born around 1798. FURTHER REMARKS I also note that the tombstone in Kellistown makes the link between traditional Nolan territory (barony of Forth; Ballon area) and traditionnal Brennan territory (area where counties Kilkenny, Carlow, Leix and Kildare are at their closest, the Shrule townland being in this area). This observation is particulary noteworthy for me as a James Brennan was a witness to James Sr's marriage to Mary Shortall in Ballon in 1793. Well that's about it for now! The James Sr. mentioned above may or may not be my ancestor but I thought I would share with you a new line of investigation in my own family research. Ronnie, Thank you for your feedback and corrections. Rosie and I are both doing well but still very much involved in our grandchild's life, babysitting 3 days a week. I can no longer do genealogical research as intensely as I did before but I do some when I find time, like now, in the context of our national holiday (July 1). Even though I would just love to spend more time exploring my roots in Ireland, I am also deeply spending time with our grandson Simon in his formative years. Rosie and I plan to go again to Ireland but most likely not sometime soon. Our son Michael and daughter-in-law Christiane are expecting their next child in December so that will again bring demands on our time. For now I must content myself with online contact with other researchers but there is nothing like on-the-ground research and we hope to make it to Ireland perhaps in two years from now.
