    3. Thank you Roger for the information and have printed it out and will save and hopefully one day soon I can find a connection to your Nowlans but you are much further back than I have been able to go.. I did notice the name of GORMAN as sponsor that you sent listed below and Bridget GORMAN m William HUDSON and also noticed you had a Michael GORMAN b 1900?-1973 s/o James GORMAN. You will see below my Philip GORMAN (1834-1910) was the s/o a James GORMAN.and Catherine McGRATH: It really gets confusing when they repeat the same first name so much. 1786 09 Nowlan, Honor parents: Nowlan, Thomas , Catherine sponsors: Gorman, David; Whelan, Anastasia Grange 1788 09 00 Hudson, William m. Bridget Gorman sponsors: Curren, James; Whelan, Valentine My Great Grandfather: Edward MALEY, Jr. s/o Edward, Sr. and Catherine WHALEN MALEY was b Feb 1860 Pesotum,Champaign Co.,IL m 20-Feb-1884 Tolono,Champaign Co.,IL Rose Ann "Annie" GORMAN b 2-Nov-1863 Pesotum, Champaign Co.,IL was the d/o Philip GORMAN b 1-Aug-1834 Ireland (I don't know where in Ireland-wish I did) and Rose Ann McNALLY b 15-Dec-1824 County Tyrone,Ireland. Rose Ann McNALLY *1824-1913) was the d/o Francis McNALLY and Sarah McCAFFERTY which I do not have any information on them other than possibly they lived in an area near Killeter,County Tyrone where their first 2 children: (Rose (1824-1913) and Hugh McNALLY (1827- 1920) m Sarah O'NEIL) were born and then moved to Tievemore,County Donegal,Ireland, in the town of Pettigo where the other 6 children (John ((1829-1916) m Ann MAHER and m 2nd Mary O'REILLY; Edward (1830-1913) m Ellen ?; Thomas (1834-1888) m Elizabeth McKENNY/KENNY m 2nd Catherine McCAFFERTY; Susan (1835-1901) m William P. McCAULEY; James (1841/44-1926) m Sarah CUNNINGHAM and Sarah McNALLY (1846-1898) m Edward BATES) were born. The McNALLY'S first went to NY, but where in NY and whether their parents were with them is unknown. I haven't been able to locate a ship's record showing the ship and when they came to America. They may have come over piecemeal and were dispersed throughout the records and perhaps hidden in this way. Being Irish immigrants, Roman Catholic and both families in the same town and working for the railroad, and going to the same Church it is easy to imagine how they met and were married. John McNALLY took a job in the 1850's in Chicago,IL for the Illinois Central Railroad and was eventually joined by his brothers and sisters at the railroad towns of Arcola, and Tolono, Illinois. Philip GORMAN (1834-1910) parents were James and Catherine McGRATH GORMAN b in Ireland but I do not know where or when and if they came to the USA. We seem to have some common christian/surnames in our family. I just haven't been able to make any connections in Ireland to my family. Which for me would be if I could find out who Catherine WHALEN/WHELEN/WHELAN's (1820/22-1896) parents and siblings were would bring me one more generation closer and where they were born in County Carlow,Ireland. Catherine WHALEN (1820/22-1896) and Edward MALEY,Sr. (1820-1892) had the following children: Michael (1850-1936); Francis "Frank" (1852-1919); Philip (1854-?); Mary (1857-1903): Edward, Jr. (1860-1893); Patrick 1862-1882); John Lawrence O'MALLEY (1867-1901); Anastasia (1870-1871) and James 1872-1929) MALEY. Appreciate the information that you did send. Gives me something to go on. Carlow I know that there was a "Whelan" family in the Ballon area in the middle to late 1700s. In the old Ballon cemetery are buried a "Thomas Whelan" and a "Winnefred Whelan alias Nowlan", perhaps his wife (as we shall see later). You can look at the two tombstones by entering "Whelan" as the seach term in the memorials section of my website. http://www.nolanfamilies.org/gallery/search.php Both Thomas and Winnefred seem to have died in the 1790s. >From the 1785-1795 Ballon-Rathoe parish records I also have the following other Whelan/Whelon information which appears at the end of this note. In the nutshell there appears to have been several Whalen/Whelan/Whelon families in the Ballon area in the late 1700s. Given the number of Nowlan/Nolans in the area, not surprisingly several of the Whelans married Nowlans. Based upon Irish naming patterns it would also appear that a Thomas Whelan was the father of a Bridget Whelan who married a Martin Nowlan in the late 1700s. As such Bridget was also likely the sister of the Thomas Whelan who also married a Nowlan, Winifred, in the 1780s. Bye for now and good luck with your Whalen research.
