    3. during one of his visits home to Carlow, I encouraged Father Paddy to write an article for Carlow Past and Present, ( I think you have a copy Michael, the issue with the green cover !) the following year I published the obituary reproduced here.. Paddy was the only son of Guard King from Brown Street. 3. Yes PP, I believe that is true regarding Guard Dinny Flynn, he came to Carlow in 1923 and remained here until his retirement in the 1970s, having served in no other station !. >From my youth there was Gaurd Hickey, Montgomery St. Gaurd Foley, Barrow Track. Guard Broughal, Pembroke, Guard Byrne, Killian's Crescent, Guard Kelly, Barrack Street, (he was the school attender guard !). Guard McHugh. Guard Behan. Sergeant Reidy, Sergeant O'Neill (who was in the GPO in 1916, and a terror to the travellers ( tinkers) in his time). Supertendent Feore ? . Everyone knew the guards by name at the time, most of them had lived most of their lives, raised families and owned property in Carlow. Have I forgotten a few !. When a new guard arrived it was the "talk of the town" for a while. 3. There were a number of Guards living close to each other in the Crescent: Byrne, Cronin, McHugh and I can't remember the fourth at the moment. Then there was O'Donnell whom I think was a detective. He and family lived further up the Crescent. John McHugh and family moved out to Tinryland but I think the rest remained in the Crescent for the rest of their lives.
