Thank you, Mike. I am trying to reconcile the disappearance of my g-g-grandfather after his second marriage in 1881 after the death of his first wife Sarah Jane Lemon in 1875.. I recently received a snippet that the person thought he had died on May 22, 1911 at the asylum. His name was Charles Thomas Farley and he was born in Dublin about 1833-34. I was wondering, if this is him, when he was admitted and why. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated Gratefully, Michelle ----- Original Message ----- From: "michael purcell" <carlowmike@gmail.com> To: <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2010 12:06 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Carlow lunatic Asylum > it is considered private...but the lists are there ...if you have one name > I > could check for you , mick > > On Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 9:47 PM, frances heidel <fradel@comcast.net> > wrote: > >> Michelle, Wouldn't that information be held as strictly >> confidential? Didn't they institutionalize people for being more than heavy drinkers?? i wonder if they ever came to the realization that once the drinking stopped, they were perfectly normal and didn't need the institutionalization. Well in that time frame they will be registered deaths and be at the GRO, and probably in their a lot of others - remember each death had to be registered so whether the person in charge of the institution signed the paper or the coroner or an undertaker they could be located in a burial records in the registers at the GRO. And that didnt matter where they died, be it in a poor house or in a home of some other name, they were registered - not in the beginning mind you but in 1910 -1911 they were fined if they did not do such a thing and if the man died in a Asylum, there were others responsible for his death being registered. Cheers Cara
