    1. [IRL-CARLOW] Rudolph Erich Raspe 1795
    2. Michael Purcell
    3. Undated letter from Jeffery Wandesforde of Sussex Court, London addressed to Pat Purcell [ circa 1930s, the following is abbreviated from a six page letter ]. Your name was given to me by the County Hall in Carlow as a person that might possibly help me trace information on Rudolph Erich Raspe who lived in Carlow during the 1790s. He went to Ireland following the gold find in county Wicklow where he lived at Avoca near Wicklow town. He was living in Carlow in 1793 where he is recorded from family letters as living in Painstown. He was associated with the Wandesforde mining enterprises in the area. He is next recorded as visiting the Mint Office in Cork City to assess finds from the area, he contracted cholera and died at Muckross in 1795. He was well known as the author of The Fabulous Adventures of the Baron Munchausen. Any assistance you can give will be much appreciated.

    3. I am afraid Mick & helpers you may accept that in the present day IT environment plagiarism is rampant, comments, pictures and indeed whole articles are reproduced without credit or acknowledgment as to the source of the material unless you can prove that such work, research and labor has been plagiarised for a thesis, dissertation or financial gain you are restrained in any legal procedures and can only depend on common courtesy and decency of the user to credit their source. Of course if the protagonist is a disciplined student or academically trained researcher publishing the work as their own then that is a different matter and should be brought to the attention of the relevant authority. It is a pity that this practice might inhibit further publication of extracts from the PPP as such extracts are of considerable assistance to genealogy researchers and a remarkable source for students of history, Noel. 3. Thanks Noel, good question, not sure what to do regarding the Pat Purcell Papers, we have about 500 Informations + Statements etc. typed up but have now to reconsider publication. In future we might just publish extract or summary of the content of such documents. Our concern has come about following the discovery that extracts ( in particular a 1809 Statement sworn by Ann Fowler ) from carlowigp were used with no acknowledgment whatever to carlowigp, Michael Brennan or the Pat Purcell Papers this despite the fact that at the end of the piece several other sources were thanked and acknowledged. That is the main reason we have stopped posting extracts from the PPP. To make matters worse when I contacted the "author" he replied "of course the PPP is credited as the source" strongly suggesting that I was too stupid to be able to detect his acknowledgement of the carlowigp, Michael Brennan or the PPP. That is all I can say for the moment as we are in discussion with a legal advisor concerning this. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] Nolan Connections
    2. Jj Woods
    3. Hi Roger, I have just discovered a possible connection with the Nolan clan. In 1871 a Matthew Nolan, of Barraderry, married Catherine Clynch on July 10th. I think she was from Killalesh(?) and may be a great grand aunt of mine. A son, Sean O'Nolan, was born April 30, 1872 and I believe he died in New York in 1945 and was buried in Malden, Massachussetts. A son, Michael, born July 11, 1874. A son, James, born August 28, 1876. A daughter, Catherine, born April, 1879. A son, Matthew, born September 25, 1881. A daughter (?), Mary Ann, born 1883. A daughter, Marieann(?), born June 1886. Do you have these or know anything more about any of them? J. J.

    3. This is the last time that I will be able to check our genealogical records as I am giving most of the records to Carlow County Library next week. The entries recorded below might not relate to Declan's family, I can find no refs to Pat and Mary O'Neill-Reddy having children baptised in Carlow Cathedral . There is a record for death of Pat Reddy, aged 19, Baker's son, Barrack Street, April, 1896. Pat Reddy, Staplestown Road was baptised 1876, son of Mary Neill and James Reddy. Michael Reddy, died, aged 16 in Jan 1897, Baker's son, Barrack Street. James Reddy, Bap. 1881, Staplestown Road, son of above couple. Anne Reddy died aged 15, Baker's daughter 1890, Barrack Street. James Reddy, Baker, died 1893, aged 46 years, Barrack Street. The papers of the Browne-Clayton-Browne estate/family of Browne's Hill are in Carlow County Library, some details on this link. 3. that's fine I will send you another account by Mary Leadbetter, my very last effort re the Castle will be to check out the The Irish Magazine 1813, there was a report in the Carlow Sentinel of 1832 that it was recorded in The Irish Magazine of 1813 that frost of that year had contributed to the collapse of the castle, ( a year before the good doctor Middleton ! ) this is not recorded in any other source , best not mention this unless one views the actual report in the magazine which I hope to track down next month !. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] THE DEMISE OF CARLOW CASTLE, as recorded by Brewer in 1824.
    2. Turtle Bunbury (History)
    3. THE DEMISE OF CARLOW CASTLE, as recorded by Brewer in 1824. This noble pile was constructed on a slight eminence upon the west side of the town overhanging the river Barrow. It was of a square form flanked with a circular tower at each angle. The doors were remarkably low and narrow and the apertures for the admission of light consisted chiefly or entirely of loop holes. From the grandeur of its proportions, and the favourable character of its situation, which allowed a free view of its massy towers and rugged sides from the various roads which lead to the town, this august pile constituted a feature of peculiar magnificence in the architectural display of Carlow. But folly and presumption have recently deprived the pictorial examiner and the antiquary of an object so well calculated for their gratification. The manor of Carlow including this noble monument of antiquity passed in consequence of an unredeemed mortgage from a late Earl Thomond to the family of a Mr Hamilton, his Lordship's law agent, who are the present proprietors. By this family a lease of the castle was granted in the year 1814 to a physician named Middleton who had formed the project of establishing in a Maison de Santé for the reception of lunatics and who speedily commenced operations with a view of rendering the building amenable to his purpose. As the loop holes in the walls were not sufficient to give the requisite light and ventilation, and as the thickness of the walls contracted undesirably the space of the rooms, this person, confiding in his own skill, undertook to enlarge the windows and diminish the thickness of the walls without calling professional knowledge to his assistance. For the latter object he laboured by a process rather new in practice, namely that of blasting the walls with gunpowder. He had proceeded far in his improvements when the pile, which had for so many ages derided the efforts of the battering ram, yielded to this more fearful mode of assault and more than one half of the castle fell to the ground.! Only the western side, comprising two of the angular towers is now remaining. This tremendous downfall occurred at the hour of nine in the morning, a time at which the workmen had suspended their labour, and happily no life was lost. The huge masses of ruin incumber the whole of the mount, except the west side, and mix with cottages at its base, which are inferior in size to many of these ponderous fragments. A man who was a witness of this unusual accident described the spectacle to the present writer in very lively terms, and observed that the downfall was so slow in operation that a person had sufficient time to escape from the sphere of destruction (as was the case with himself) after viewing the portentous and amazing nodding of the towers. The immense pile gradually disparted into vast masses, which broke with difficulty into fragments less mighty. Many gigantic pieces of the ruin rolled to the very doors of some humble cabins on the opposite side of a road at the base of the castle mount. >From “The beauties of Ireland: being original ‪delineations, topographical, historical, and biographical, of each county’, Volume 2, by James Norris Brewer (‪Sherwood, Jones, & co.‬, 1826)

    3. Templeshelin is in Wexford, near Adamstown. I visited there last fall because the church was Church of Ireland and a family story of our Irish Catholics says that one branch of the family came from a Protestant parson. My branch of the Catholics I believe is from Marley, St. Mullins, Carlow, but their cousins were from Wexford. We have one marriage record only for one of the cousins from the RC church at Adamstown, and possibly the mother of this woman at Templeshelin in the 1834 tithe applotments. We think the mother's father or grandfather may have been the CofI parson (Rev. Lucas) so I wanted to see what was left of Templeshelin. There were only a handful headstones there and not much in Cantwell's Memorials of the Dead which I accessed at the Wexford City library. I was also interested in the Parslow name, because, back in Marley, in looking at the provenance of Marley House, I saw that a Parslow family was living there in the early 1900s. I don't know of any relation of my people to Parslows but my people lived next door. This link http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jacob-722 has information in a posting way down at the bottom about Parslows buried in Templeshelin. Regards, ~Linda S.
