    1. [IRL-CARLOW] Michael Smyth of "Smyth's of Newtown" 1926-2013.
    2. Michael Purcell
    3. *Michael Smyth died 10th September 2013.* *Eulogy by Michael Purcell following Michael Smyth's burial in Newtowncemetery. * *Michael Purcell recalls the fun times, the music and the man.* * * *AN APPRECIATION.* *With the passing of Michael Smyth, so also passes a chapter of Carlowhistory. Among his many interests Michael loved talking about our heritage and was fascinated by the centuries old Smyth connection with Carlow. The Smyth family were first recorded living in Carlow in 1653 when Robert Smythe from Yorkshire purchased, from a puritan adventurer, 90 acres of land in "Botorduef" (now Newtown, renamed after the Newtown family). * *In 1742 Robert Smyth is recorded as holding a 5-day licence to sell only beer in Newtown.* *But it is as a "singing lounge" that many present-day readers will remember Smyth's of Newtown, with Michael playing the pianos or the Hammond organ.* *Revellers travelled from all over Leinster to entertain and be entertained in the famous cabaret lounge.* *Michael had a flair for encouraging the most reluctant of customers to stand before the mic. If they were offering to sing something he did not know, Michael would simply say "you hum it and I will play it" and in a short time he would be playing the tune as if it was an old favourite.* * For over five decades Michael, with a boyish enthusiasm and a fine ear, unerringly accompanied both amateur and professional singers, he could also manage to make croaky-sounding moaners, like meself, sound good.* *An accomplished pianist, but unfortunately not gifted with a singing voice, Michael loved nothing better than to let his fingers ripple over the keyboards playing everything from the classics to modern-day tunes.* *His love of music was an essential element in the formation of his character, encouraged by his parents from a young age, he attended piano lessons in Dublin and later perfected his musical skills with Dr. Karl Seeldrayers in Carlow. * *Michael played piano at every opportunity, a visit to the pub at any time of the day would find him playing in one of the lounges. Usually when playing for his own enjoyment Michael liked to play the compositions of Chopin, Beethoven or Mozart and often included pieces by neglected composers.* *Michael's favourites were the Irish bard Thomas Moore and the great German and Austrian composers, between tunes he would, with the incisiveness of a philosopher of music discuss their life and times. * *He would often introduce the playing of some classical piece by exclaiming " I will now play the Newtown version of this famous work" ( for us, Michael became our very own "Arthur Rubinstein of Newtown" ) he would then, with a gentle mischievousness, **proceed to play the piece with all the seriousness of a professional concert pianist.* *When in form he could play Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2, filling in for the strings section to perfection.* *In 2008 I gave Michael a Leonard Cohen CD, within a few minutes he was playing his own version of Hallelujah in a style that would have done Jeff Buckley proud. * *Michael held a life-long appreciation of Choral music and travelled long distances to hear choirs perform the classics.* *He travelled widely and claimed that whatever city in the world he found himself in he always managed to play a grand piano at some venue or other.* *He loved the United States of America, having visited there over 20 times. He became involved with the Tempe Sister Cities programme in 1990, and was a welcoming host to visitors from Tempe, Arizona, when he would lecture them on American history and amaze the visitors with his knowledge of the life and times of the US Presidents from Washington to Clinton.* *He would then play pieces from the Great American Songbook covering all styles from Stephen Foster to Michael Jackson.* * * *No matter where in the world he wandered Michael retained a love for his own place and parish and for over 50 years he was organist at St Patrick's Church, Newtown. In July 2006 he was honoured by Pope Benedict when he was presented with the Bene Merenti medal in recognition of his service to the parish.* *During all this time Michael continued to work behind the bar but wisely left most of the management duties to his brother, Paudge. * *Paudge's death in 2004 was a severe blow for Michael and although he never showed it, one got the impression that he never really came to terms with the vacuum created by Paudge's absence but with Michael any setbacks or problems were brushed aside with the comment "it's all going through life".* *Michael was interviewed by journalists and writers many times, we are very fortunate that Turtle Bunbury included Smyths of Newtown in his fine 2008 book "The Irish Pub" with superb pictures captured by James Fennell.* *In 1995 Carlow County Heritage Society recorded on video an interview with the Smyth brothers and filmed Michael, dressed in elegant "concert attire", playing for about an hour on the grand piano as part of the society's Living Memory project.* * **In latter years the handicap of failing health was not allowed to interfere with his piano playing, he sustained his love of music to the end. When he entered a nursing home Michael continued tinkling the ivories on the upright piano entertaining his fellow residents at the HillviewNursing Home in Carlow.* *A man who lived by the rules of truthfulness, honesty and integrity, his courteous approach, quite humour and soft spoken manner, allied to his musical talent served him well throughout his long life. * *Sometimes playing ( illegally ! ) into the early hours during his "concerts" , Michael, with an impish glint in his eye, liked to quote Thomas Moore -* *" Awake !, * *The heavens look bright, my friends* *Tis' never too late for delight, my friends* *And the best of all ways * *To lengthen our days * *Is to steal a few hours from the night, my friends".* * * *The very many grateful friends left behind will not be short of memories, I am privileged to be counted among them. M.P.*

    1. [IRL-CARLOW] Adjusted submission to Carlowigp.
    2. Michael Purcell
    3. *From the Pat Purcell Papers.* * [ with corrections to previous submission from Michael Purcell, Sept. 2008 ]* *Relating to 1803 Statement signed by "Kilwarden" - - Viscount Lord Kilwarden ( Arthur Wolfe of Forenaughts, a Kildare man) he served as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench in Ireland.* *He was piked to death by followers of Robert Emmet on Thomas Street, Dublin on 23rd July during the failed Rising of 1803.* * He was travelling in a coach with his daughter, Marianne and his grandnephew, Rev. Straubenze Wolfe, when their coach was attacked by some of Emmet's group.* * When requested to identify themselves it is recorded that Lord Kilwardenput his head out through the coach window and exclaimed "It is I, Kilwarden, Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench". The insurgents could hardly believe their luck at such a prize. All three passengers were dragged from the coach by the mob.* *Lord Kilwarden was piked, some soldiers came to his aid, he died a few hours later. * * His last words were "murder must be punished ~ but let no man suffer for my death, but on a fair trial, and by the laws of this country".* *His grandnephew was piked to death, his mangled body was removed to Dublin Castle. * *Kilwarden's daughter, Marianne was rescued by a local man who brought her to his house on Thomas Street.* * In 1798 Lord Kilwarden made representation to have Wolfe Tone's life spared. It was hinted at the time that Wolfe Tone was the illegitimate son of Lord Kilwarden* *Lord Kilwarden was a regular visitor to the Browne family in Carlow, on many occasions he presided at trials in Carlow Court House.* *Rev. Richard Struabenze served for a short time as Rector at Dunleckney, Carlow.* *A portrait of Richard Wolfe was sold in 2010 at a Dublin auction house, I drew attention of the sale to a present-day descendant of the Wolfe family, I was requested to purchase the picture on their behalf, when handing over the picture I gave the original of the 1803 "Kilwarden" document from the PPP to the family*

Carlow. <http://www.thesilverbowl.com/history/JACKSONs-NashesQuarter.html>This page pulls together references to deeds and a few other bits that I have surrounding Esther JACKSON and her leases at Coolmana, aka Nashe's Quarter in Co. Carlow. I have also appended a tentative family tree - rather more of a shrub actually, as well as a similar one for her SHARP family. This is all in the hopes that we may be able to tie them into another tree of JACKSONs. Possibilities include JACKSONs in Carlow, Wicklow, Kildare as well as Lanark Co., Ontario, Canada. 1794 July 16 Lease <http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/1794Jul16-WICKLOW-JACKSON.html>. NAMES: Right Honourable Robert Lord Viscount Wicklow aka Robert HOWARD; Esther JACKSON née SHARP of Coolamanna aka Coolmana aka Nashe's Quarters; Joseph BARKER; Sarah BARKER née SHARP; Samuel ALCOCK; Elizabeth ALCOCK née SHARP; Samuel SHARP late of Knockballystine; Benjamin BURTON of Burton Hall; Robert SHARP of Garretstown; James McNAVIN; John WILSON; William SALE or SALL; John PIRIE; John CAHILL; Edward KANE. If the hyperlinks do not work, then you can always find the pages by clicking on "NEW" on my website (address below) and looking under the date of this email. 3. Marilyn There are quite a few Crawfords in Ireland but it is essentially a Scottish name. The son of a Co Wicklow family that I am researching married in Wicklow in 1871 a lass named Turnbull whose father was serving in the Wicklow Rifles. The whole family had come from Roxburgh in Scotland where the father had been demobbed from a British regiment. So, I am just offering the possibility that your George Crawford "may" have been recruited to the Irish Constabulary from Scotland. Bill -----Original Message----- From: irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Michael Purcell Sent: Monday, 9 September 2013 4:20 PM To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Crawford Tullow. Email this morning from : Ippm2003@yahoo.ca Hello Michael, My husband and I met you last May in the Carlow Library. We were visiting from Canada and looking for information about the Crawfords of Tullow. You might remember that George Crawford was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary and you subsequently sent me a newspaper article about him. Just to refresh your memory: My great great grandfather, William Crawford married in Ottawa, Canada, 26 May 1874 at the age of 28. His marriage record says that he came from "Ireland" and that his parents were George and Margaret Crawford. Family lore is that he came from Carlow, Ireland. Crawford appears to be a somewhat uncommon name in Carlow. In the Griffith's Valuation (1852) there is only one George Crawford in Carlow, living at The Course, Parish of Tullowphelim, Townland of Tullow. A George Crawford died in Tullow on November 21, 1885. His death certificate indicates that he was on a police pension. There is a service record for a George Crawford in the Royal Irish Constabulary which states that his home county was Cavan and that he was posted to Kildare and then Carlow. According to his service record, this George retired from the RIC in 1862 after 25 1/2 years of service. He received a pension. In Slater's Directory of 1870 for Tullow and the Village of Ballon, there is a George Crawford listed as a provision dealer, Market Square, Tullow. This may be the same George, now in a retirement occupation. There is a burial record for a Margaret Crawford (April 18, 1886) in Tullow. I have not been able to find a copy of her death certificate at the Office of the Registrar General. According to George's RIC record his (unnamed) wife came from Kildare. George's police record states that he was transferred to County Carlow in August of 1843. My great great grandfather William Crawford was born about 1846/47. I have not been able to find a record of the birth of William or any siblings in County Carlow. I wonder if William's baptism might be recorded in the Carlow Presbyterian or Methodist records (or possibly some other Protestant group)? You mentioned that you had a transcript of some of these records that your uncle had made. Could I prevail upon you to have a look? This is a brick wall that seems almost unsurmountable and I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me.
