    3. it would appear all Nolans-Nowlans were recorded by Dudley Hill as Nowland in June 1798, when the remnants of the United Irishmen in Carlow were forced to seek a Protection from the Magistrates or face the consequences. Here is one such entry in the "Protections" Journal of Dudley Hill, under-Sheriff. Laurence is obliged to state who acted as Captain of his group. Laurence Nowland, of Ballycroge, Labourer, Sworn a United Irishman by a Man at Rathvilly, Michael Keefe to be Captain.

    1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] 1798 "Protections" list + NOWLAND vs NOWLAN vs NOLAN
    2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Mike, Thank you for looking up Nolan entries in the 1798 "Protections" list. Do you have access to Tullow court records from 1798 relating to the presumed conspiract to murder Sir Robert Cornwall of Myshall? This is likely where the names of Henry Whaley/Whalley and James Nowlan/Nowland would reoccur. As regards the spelling of the NOLAN family name don't pay too much attention to that. Following is a summary of my observations for Co. Carlow. The "Nowland" spelling seems to have been first used in the mid-to-late 1600s (perhaps having to do with the socoal status of having/leasing "land"). For example, in the late 1660s, "Garrett Nowland" was leasing land on the Ballykealey estate and, in the late 1700s, there were still "Nowland" families leasing in the Ballon area. On the 1787 Ballykealey estate map the following Nowland names are recorded as leaseholders for the various lot numbers given. "Connyborrough" - Cunnaberry townland ------------------------------------------------- #1 (19+ acres) - Patrick Nowland #2 (1+ acre) - James Nowland #3, 4 & 5, 6 with house and garden - (7+ acres total) - John Nowland #7 & 8 - Jockey Nowland - (6+ acres) On "East side of the road from Castledermot" ------------------------------------------------------- [RN: next to "Capel" (sic Keppel/Kepple) land] #22 & 23 (43+ acres) - Rev'd Doctor Nowland [RN: Ballon parish priest; first name Nicholas] South of Ballon Village going towards Crowe's Crossroads in Killane) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ #49 (32+ acres) - Thomas Hayden #50, 51 & 52 (40+ acres in Killane) - James Kelly #53 & 54 (26+ acres in Ballyranell) - John Nowland NOTE: I included James Kelly and Thomas Hayden in the list above as they are relevaant to my own family research. Based upon an analysis of Carlow tombstones, the Nowland spelling seems to have been used up to the late 1800s when the "d" was dropped. In my romps through Carlow cemeteries I only found 3 tombstones with the Nowland spelling. They were those of: - James Nowland (c1742-1762) in Clonegal - John Nowlan (c1750-1788) in Dunleckney - Thomas Nowlan (c1763-1811) in Ballon; married to a Mary Cummins In the late 1700s the Nowlan form seems to have been most prevalent with the general population. For example, in the Ballon-Rathoe parish records for 1785-1795, Nolan families are recorded using the "Nowlan" spelling. The "Nolan" spelling only seems to have caught in the early 1800s. By 1851, two-thirds of Nolan leaseholders in Co. Carlow were using the Nolan spelling. The other third used the Nowlan spelling. Some leads I'm finding are pointing towards Rathmore as the potential place or marriage for these people. 3. Yes Maribeth we are lucky they recorded so much detail. Another Hannah Jackson statement was published on the Carlow site some time ago but the statement posted yesterday has a few changes, it is made a day later and Benjamin Bunbury has become involved. It seems he advised on the wording of such statements and on what might be admissible or acceptable to the Magistrates of the time. One noticeable addition is the full title of King George, this is common on all Bunbury's documents. Besides I don't think that Carbery Hendley was a Magistrate ?. Here is another statement concerning that same incident but with even more detail added and again Bunbury adds his signature. I am grateful to Turtle Bunbury for his assistance and advice concerning the Bunbury Papers. The Examinations of Mary Kersy of Tullow in the County of Carlow Servant to Mr. John Brough of Tullow aforesaid taken before Carbery Hendley Esquire one of his Majesty's Justice of the Peace for said County. The said Examinant being only sworn on the Holy Evangelists and Examinant say that on or about the Twenty seventh day of April last - Examinant being called up by Hannah Jackson on the morning of said day in her said Masters House in Tullow aforesaid she found Walter Magee and two other men whose names she has since heard are Henry Whaley and Daniel Horahan and in sometime afterwards James Nowland and James Gillespy joined said Magee in her said Masters House and the said Henry Whaley demanded the Key of the Parlour door of said House from this Examinant which Examinant gave the said Whaley whom opened the Parlour door and the said Henry Whaley and said other Persons went into said parlour and remained the for sometime. This Examinant sayth the said Magee told Examinant that he the said Henry Whaley had been for sometime that morning in an Outhouse waiting for an opportunity of getting into her said masters House and that as soon as Hannah Jackson who was then a Servant of the said John Brough's, had opened the door, he the said Walter Magee put a cocked Pistole to the said Hannah Jackson's Breast and then he and said other persons got into said dwelling House and forcibly kept possession thereof fore sometime and threatened to take possession of the Remainder of part of said House until said Master who was above stairs with his family in bed made his appearance. Her Mary *X *Kersey Mark Sworn before me this 6th day of July 1782. 1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] 1782. .....+HENRY WHALEY/WHALLEY+ ..... + JAMES NOWLAN???
    2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Mike [Purcell], Did you come across another Tullow court for 1782, where Henry Whalley/Whaley is mentioned in connection with a similar incident if not he same one described below. I recall reading a similar account about a year ago but this time also mentioning a James Nowlan, a yoeman in Tullow at the time. In the account I read Henry Whalley was described as a yoeman in Tullow. Henry Whalley's name also resurfaces in the late 1790s (1797/98) as someone providing assurances for a James Nowlan who was included in a charge of conspiring to murder Captain Robert Cornwall of Myshall (head of the militia stationed there at the time). The source of my information for the latter is only second hand and is found on page 296 of the Nolan book "O'Nolan - A People's History" published in 2000 and co-authored by Fr. John Nolan (initial draft in 1920s) and Art Kavanagh. Here is relevant excerpt from page 296: "... Three men who were accused of conspiracy to murder Robert Cornwall of Myshall got bail. One of them James Dougherty was bailed by Michael Nolan of Killane. A James Nolan was bailed by Henry Whalley while a Patrick Doyle was bailed by Sir Richard Butler and Lawrence Nowlan. Nolan and Doyle were accused of being United Irishmen." Based upon an analysis of names appearing together in baptismal and marriage records for the Ballon-Rathoe parish, especially with that of a James Brennan, believed to have been a yoeman in the Tulllow cavalry led by Sir Richard Butler (prior to 1798), I was able to piece together that my ancestor was likely the James Nowlan of Tullow mentioned in the 1782 court record I described earlier. I also pieced together that my ancestor James also likely had a brother named Michael Nowlan, married to an Anne Brennan, who was a yoeman in Killane. In the baptismal records the name of a Lawrence Nowlan also appears as a possible brother to James and Michael, the yoemen. From one of the books by Father Swayne (Padraig MacSuibhne) I also know that Sir Richard Butler , captain of the Tullow cavalry (pre-1798) was at one time headquatered on the Kilconnor townland (essentially close to and west of the Killane townland; this is the area southwest of Ballon Village). I also read someplace that Sir Richard Butler was believed by some to have been a secret supporter of the United Irishman. In any case, truth or fiction, strictly based upon by own personal family research, I believe that the James Nowlan and MichaelNowlan, yoeman, in my family tree were the "James Nolan" and "Michael Nolan of Killane" mentioned in the Nolan book excerpt given above. I also found a transcription for a tombstone erected to the memory of a "James Brenan" and his wife "Margaret Shortall" buried in a cemetery (Upper Grange) close to Goresbridge (across the river from Balllyellin, Co. Carlow; a former barracks town I believe). Birth dates and timeframes support him being the same person as the James Brennan who was a yoeman in the Tullow cavalry, serving under Sir Richard Butler. My ancestor James Nowlan was also married to a Shortall (a very uncommon name for Co. Carlow; their main county of origin is Kilkenny). To summarize, I am interested in any court records where the names of James Nowlan, yoeman of Tullow, and Michael Nowlan, yoeman of Killane, might appear. Also, the record involving James Nowlan/Nolan being bailed out in 1798 by Henry Whalley would be of special interest. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] Surname Roll Call List
    2. Linda Shipman
    3. Hi, Can you put my research surnames on your Carlow Roll Call Registry? If so, this is the information I'd like posted: LENNON, LYNAN, LANNIN/FITZPATRICK Mary LENNON immigrated to Wisconsin from Co. Carlow and first shows in WI in the 1850 census, married to John FITZPATRICK with two children, John aged 4, James aged 2, both born WI. Mary's Father was Denis LENNON. Family history is she travelled with her sister named Rose or Roseann to the U.S. Her brother was a hosteller (unnamed), and the family worked on a large estate (unnamed) in Carlow. Research, so far, indicates there were several Denis Lennons in Carlow; Civil Parishes of Fennagh; Lorum; Myshall and Sliguff. She was RC. Soon to be conducted research in the Myshall and Bagenalstown RC church records will hopefully show some results. For more info on these two lines go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~leshipman/fitzpatrick.html 26 Jan 2010 Thank you, Linda Snyder Shipman leshipman1@att.net

    3. Anne Buckley has made a very interesting discovery on the 1911 Census for Carlow Urban; there is no TULLOW STREET. It is described as YELLOW STREET: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Carlow/Carlow_Urban/Yellow_Street/ Michael Brennan County Carlow Website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/ My Laois Page: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mjbrennan/index.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Anne Buckley To: mjbrennan@blueyonder.co.uk Sent: Monday, January 25, 2010 8:50 PM Subject: 1911 Irish Census Michael, Thought you might like the following piece of info. or then perhaps you already know about it. In the 1911 census, Tullow Street in Carlow is recorded as Yellow Street. I wasted a lot of time looking for a family until I realized the error. I haven't seen anything about the mistake on the Carlow list & thought the information might save some researchers some time & effort. Thanks for all you do. Anne.

There seem to be ways to correct a surname error, couldn't find a way to correct a townland spelling. Jack Langton .
