Eastern Standard Time, carlowmike@gmail.com writes: Circa 1885 --among the donations to the building of a new church in Rathvilly the following friends of Rathvilly living in the USA were recorded as subscribers.............. A great thought to post a list like this, with names and addresses and cities. It just shows how far-flung the inhabitants of just one village like Rathvilly were, and why it's so difficult to trace them. Unfortunately my roots do not lie in Rathvilly, but i'm sure it will be a big help to some listers. We need more original thinking like this. It also reminds me of a story about my great-grandfather, who was asked to help solicit funds for a new Catholic church in Moneenroe. He knew everyone, so he would ask of both Catholic and Protestant alike. Should a non-Catholic demur, he would then ask if they would like to contribute to a fund to tear down the old Catholic church. Jack Langton

    1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] THOMAS SHIELS of Victoria, BC
    2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Tom, Thank you for picking up on BC versus CB. I guess I was too tired yesterday to pick up on it. However, it did literally "come to me in my sleep" and you beat me to it :-)) I checked on Wikipedia when British Columbia was first formed as a colony. It was only in 1858 but without Vancouver Island which was only added in 1866. So, someone born in Victoria (on Vancouver Island) circa 1835 and entered the US before 1860 (when Thomas first appears on the New Hamphire census) would have rightfully stated that he came from Victoria (originally a British fort location). Now I have to come back to the issue of the meaning of CB. I checked neighbouring pages of the 1851 census to see if CB also appeared on neighbouring pages. It does! In profusion! It therefore appears that the 1851 census taker, although French speaking (Descelles), used CB to mean "Canada Bas" as you first suggested. It may have been the popular way of saying it at the time. Language does evolve over time. To summarize, it looks as if the Montreal Shiells family in 1851 is another family, not Dee's (but possibly related!). Nonetheless, in the meantime, I believe that the issue of "Victoria" as a place of origin has been resolved. I suggest that Dee take a look at the history page for British Columbia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_British_Columbia ) to perhaps get further ideas to pursue her research. I don't know what Victoria/ Fort Victoria was like in 1835 when Thomas was born and that would be something to research further. Bye for now, Roger ******************** http://nolanfamilies.org ********************

    3. Dee.... I had a thought. Could Thomas have been saying he owed allegiance to Queen Victoria? Perhaps it wasn't a 'place' he was mentioning but a person. 3. Absolutely right Roger. Thinking about this a bit more, CB would stand for Colombie-Britannique which is British Columbia in English. I just looked up the official list of abbreviations used in the 1851 Census on the Canadian Archives site: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.005-e.html So Victoria is the most obvious Canadian one as Mary thought: it's Victoria, B.C. -----Original Message----- From: irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Roger Nowlan Sent: 29 January 2010 22:41 To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Victiria - "Thomas SHIELLS" aged 15 in 1851in Montreal Tom, Thank you for your input. 1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] "Victoria" as a place of origin
    2. Roger Nowlan
    3. Dee, In my last Email I had suggested Victoriaville, Quebec, as a possible origin for the place of origin "Victoria". I don't know who filled in the US immigration form and where but "ville" is town in French so that someone hearing "Victoriaville" might just write down "Victoria". Just like in English, if someone said that they came from Carlow town an official might just write down Carlow. Victoriaville is located between Quebec, a port city, and the New Hampshire border and could plausibly be a place where someone would stop for awhile before moving on to New Hampshire. Victoriaville was a point on the Grand Trunk railroad. A bit of a stretch but who knows? Regards, Roger P.S. I also found a Thomas Shiels, a Roman Catholic born in Ireland circa 1817, working on a farm owned by a Presbyterian farmer from Scotland, Archibald Camel, in Lanark county, Canada West/Ontario. *********************** ----- Original Message ----- From: <MacShea95@aol.com> To: <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 29, 2010 8:39 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Victiria - "Thomas SHIELLS" aged 15 in 1851 inMontreal >I have found that Thomas Shields was from Ireland (possibly Roscommon I am > not sure). 1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Victiria - "Thomas SHIELLS" aged 15 in 1851 in Montreal
    2. I have found that Thomas Shields was from Ireland (possibly Roscommon I am not sure). His father's name was Roger and his mother's name was Anna. He appears in the 1860 Census in Rollinsford Cty New Hampshire...............all this is wonderful but does not answer the original question as to why he would have put "Victoria" as either his birth country/or country of allegiance. Thank you again Roger for what seemed like the perfect answer but I don't think that is my Thomas. Back behind the wall......................sigh. Dee In a message dated 1/29/2010 8:25:03 P.M. 3. Dee, If Thomas was born in 1835 and went to Victoria county, New Brunswick, his name might appear in the 1851 and/or 1861 census for New Brunswick, or an early census for Maine. Lumbering people moved freely across the border at the time. 1. [IRL-CARLOW] A Pike.
    2. michael purcell
    3. A Pike was a steel or iron spearhead mounted on a shaft resembling a lance , produced by local blacksmiths. Its hook could be used to unseat a cavalryman or to sever a horse's bridle.

These men in this list seem to have been seen with pikes in their possession that day or the pikes were found later in their possession and now they are providing their own affidavits or are providing affidavits from other upstanding citizens in support of their request for protection from prosecution. 1. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Nolan - PIKES & PROTECTION explained - I hope!
    2. Roger, Thank you for taking the time to reply. I suspected that was the case with the pikes and protection, just wasn't sure. Where in Canada are you situated. My family went to Canada originally. The a part of Ontario. Camden and the surrounding area. I've noticed the Nolan/Nowlan traffic on this site. The records I've seen in Canada have seemed to indicate a relationship with my Carrolls/Byrn(e)(s) as friends or relations from the Clonmore (Carlow) or Killabeg area of Co. Wicklow. At any rate thanks again for your time sir! Denny, Being Canadian, I am no expert on Irish history but, for those like Denny who may be wondering about "protection" and "pikes" here is my take on the historical context. In 1798, buoyed by the recent success of Independence movements in America (1776) and in France, there was also a Rebellion of sorts in Ireland, commonly referred to as the "Rebellion of 1798". County carlow was particularly hard hit although most of the military action seems to have been concentrated in Co. Wexford (Battle of Vinegar Hill, etc.). The French even made a landing in northwestern Ireland. To make a long story short the Rebellion failed and most of the United Irishmen were only equipped with "pikes" (a lance of sort carried by people on foot). The bearing of arms in Ireland had been strictly controlled in Ireland and very few of the common folk had firearms, hence the appearance of "pikes" on the scene, usually made by local blacksmiths. In Carlow, on an appointed day, all the "United Irishmen" (members of a secret Irish society, Catholics AND Protestants) and their leaders, many of them former yoeman (a sort of military policeman), converged on Carlow town to take the town from the military (there was also attack on Borris if my memory serves me right). The attack was to be a surprise but somehow the military were alerted beforehand and, again, to make a long story short, many of the United Irishmen were killed or trapped in burning buildings. Those who survived were offered "protection" from prosecution if they provided information, if my understanding is correct, usually the names of other United Irishmen e.g. who their captain was. In the end, I believe that many of the survivors were granted an amnesty. However, for the first few years following 1798, there seems to have been reprisals from both sides, a sort of settling of scores "outside the law". Those who took part in such actions (beatings, house burnings, etc.) were also called rebels. In my own family research I have identified I believe someone who died during this period. He is generally known to history as "Farmer Clowry" who was shot while working in his field. His tombstone in the Kellistown cemetery gives his year of death as 1800. His first name was Darby (Jeremiah) and his widow, Anne, applied for and received a Government pension around 1804 (source: Early Parliamentary papers of Ireland). My Canadian ancestor's mother was previously married to a James Clowry who lived in the same area as Farmer Clowry. I wanted to keep it short but there you have it. If anyone wants to add clarifications or make corrections jump in. However, I think that most people want to turn the page on this sad period in Irish history. 2. Like Roger, I also thought of Canada, but the other side.  I was thinking of Victoria BC.  (Which is very close to Seattle.)  If your ancestor came to the US via Canada I guess which of these Victoria's would depend on where he settled in the US - East or West. 3. Hi Dee, I have Sheil/Sheilds relatives: James - married Catherine Walsh @ 1865 Their children: John - born 1866 Thomas - born 1868 James - born 1871 William - born 1874 Mary Elizabeth (my grandmother) - born 1878 James was Church of Ireland and Catherine was Catholic so they decided to raise the boys Protestant the the girl was raised Catholic. Here's what I have come to understand from family lore: John was divorced in England and he went to the "south seas". Thomas emigrated to Washington state, James moved to Dublin, William went to Belfast, and Mary E. came to America in 1921. What is the date for your Thomas' citizenship papers? ----- Original Message ----- From: <MacShea95@aol.com> To: <IRL-CARLOW@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 28, 2010 10:01 PM Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Victoria > Since this is the list with the most gifted members I am going to put out > another query.
