Hi Turtle, I have some info about the D'Israeli who lived in Co. Carlow. The executor of his estate was one Hugh Cummins. Here is the link to the info on my Cummins website . http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cummins/D%27IsraeliCuming.htm Sue ----- Original Message ----- From: "Turtle Bunbury" <turtle@turtlebunbury.com> To: "Carlow Rootsweb" <irl-carlow@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 23, 2010 9:51:12 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] D'Israeli School, Bough Does anyone know anything more of D'Israeli School, Bough, Rathvilly, Co. Carlow? My notes tell me that it was completed in 1826 and designed by Joseph Welland, later Vice-President of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, for an uncle of Benjamin Disraeli, the British Prime Minister, who had won a National Lottery and decided to put the money to good use. D'Israeli died in 1814 and bequeathed £3000 for the establishment and support of a non-denominational school "for the education of the poor of Rathvilly". In 1818, D'Israeli's home at Beechey Park was sold by Hugh Cumming, the administrator of the estate of Benjamin D'Israeli, to James Eustace for £2400 Stg. Richard Corrigan published something on the D'Israeli school in Carlovina in 1970s, have you seen that ? did you spot the school re-opening item among the 1922 submissions to List ? I have been avidly reading the excellent historical content on this list for the last few months. Very fascinating reading and finally a Boles reference! Alexander Boles married Susan Pearson. 19th June 1894 Lisdrumgran. Father: James Boles Lisdrumgran seems to be in Leitrim???? Strange they are in a Carlow register. This is a somewhat local Boles though as this Alexander Boles lived near Abbeyleix where two children were born in 1898 (Evelyn) and 1900 (Herbert). The 1901 census has him at Knocknagrally or Kilkennybeg, Aghmacart parish. The 1911 Census has them still at the same place and has Alexander born in Leitrim and Susan born in Queen's county. They had four children living then and I found a 5th child of theirs in Tipperary in the 1911 census. The August 1920 edition of The Nationalist has a sale notice for Mr. Alexander Boles' residence at Levally Farm, Rathdowney, Queen's county. I lost track of them after that but they aren't my Bowles from Carlow and Ballickmoyler anyway just a near miss from county Leitrim. Very interesting in any case and it adds to my knowledge the actual townland in Leitrim where Alexander came from and that his father's name was James. Seeking information about the parents of Patrick, James and Andrew Kinsella listed below. Their children were born in Wicklow in Magnacool, Avoca, Killiegh, Meetings, Ballycoog, Threewells, Cronebeg and surrounds. Their surnames were spelt in some of the Kinsella variations. I have not included all children from each family, as I'm more interested in the parents. I'm wondering if the family/ies originated in Carlow. Reverend Michael Rafter was the Dean of Carlow College in 1824 Whilst helping one of my listers - I came across above man but does anyone know anything of this man Michael Norton of Castle Street listed as a publican in 1824. I feel he may be the first link to the Michael Norton I am seeking and of coures like all research there is a BUT - but were there more than one Michael Norton? So if anyone can answer that for me I dont need a Griffiths search though as I cant come that far forward yet with this man. Cara
someone recently enquired about Marlborough Clarke Douglas, he was a member of the Methodist community in Carlow. A plaque is erected to his memory on a wall inside the church on the Athy Road. He wrote a history of Carlow. Pat Purcell inherited his research papers in 1924. Marlborough wrote : The precise interpretation of Catherlough (Carlow) raises the hackles among otherwise amenable historians. Some state it means "Four-angled Lake", others claim it translates as "Four Lakes". But the translation most favoured is "Stone Fort on the Lake".
A tribute from Nationalist and Leinster Times newspaper owner and editor, Liam D. Bergin. Nationalist, January, 1965. Carlow mourns the passing of Desmond Early. Mr. Desmond Early, who died on Monday, the fortitude of a long and fatal illness over, was one of the most lovable and respected citizens of Carlow. In his case one can say, without overworking a cliche, that he was truly one of "nature's gentlemen". Carlow grew to know him when he returned from another career in the Far East to take over the legal business of his father, William Early, who died in the late 1930s - the old firm of P.J. Byrne, Solicitors, Dublin Street, Carlow. The late Desmond Early , who had already chosen another career in foreign parts, set out to qualify as a solicitor. An active athlete since his schooldays, he played Rugby Football for Trinity College Dublin and for Carlow. Mr. Early was for some years a director of the Graigue-Cullen Corn and Coal Company. He took an interest in many charitable works, and in recent years he was prominently associated with the foundation of the first Cheshire Home in Ireland, at Shillelagh. There was none more popular than Desmond Early both in his professional life and as a sportsman. In his legal business he set himself standards of service and integrity all interlaced with a dominating concept of Christian charity, which was always reflected in his personal and professional dealings with people. It was his refinement of character that he could rarely bring himself to see evil in any man, and certainly never to speak disparagingly about anyone. Carlow people , and his friends far-and-wide, who lament the early death of Desmond Early, feel with his widow and young family the profound loss of a man who enriched all his contacts in life by his example as a sincere Christian gentleman. He will have more than most of us to recommend him before the Divine Judge.

Hello I am new to the list and had been concentrating my searches in Wicklow. As the area of interest is close to the border with Carlow and Wexford I'm branching out. My ggg grandmother was Eliza Kehoe, married to Arthur Byrne circa 1818. They were tenant farmers on the Fitzwilliam Estate in the townland of Coolross/Coolruss. Just across the road from them is the townland of Urelands/Newry. In Newry in 1827 I found a Michael Kehoe age 49 according to the FW rental papers. His wife was 42. Given that reporting of ages was unreliable, it is possible that they were the parents of Eliza. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters reported living with them. Michael was a labourer. They had 3 acres. In 1824 Michael Keyhoe in the Tithe Applotments, had 8 acres and paid 9s7d in rent. No family information is given. In 1839, Michael Keoghoe was age 65 and his wife 55. Two sons and a daughter were still with them and they had 4 acres 2 rods. In 1848 Michael was 70 and so was his wife. They had 5 acres, one son and one male servant and one female relative living with them. In 1850 both were 72 and one son was with them. That's the last I found of them. Two of Art and Eliza's children had Kehoe sponsors: Owen and Martin. I have no idea if they were related to Michael of Newry. They were baptized in the RC church in Clonegal. I only have records for the baptisms of the four youngest of Art and Eliza's family as records started in 1833 after their oldest children were born. I have the history of that parish "A Christian Calling" and have not found anything particularly helpful there except the 1824 tithe applotments above. Any information or suggestions where to look would be much appreciated. Ann Burns Ottawa ON

Many thanks for sharing this information Turtle. I'm researching Richard Brough and every little bit helps. Carlow, written between 1754 and his death in 1774. I've transcribed the complete diary which can be found here http://www.turtlebunbury.com/family/bunburyfamily_lisnavagh/bunburyfamily_lisnavagh_thomaskilldiary.html or a potted version (with background) here at http://www.turtlebunbury.com/family/bunburyfamily_lisnavagh/bunburyfamily_lisnavagh_thomasbunburyofkill.html ... In the diary, Thomas refers to a number of people with whom he has financial dealings. Some of these wee tenants, others employees and others perhaps just acquaintances. Among the names he mentions are: Ta. Chritchly, Fran. Harvey, Pat Whelan, Jemy Cloy, Sam Baxter, Maurice Baxter, Thomas Fleming, Mrs Jane Pierse, John Kelly, Mr Martin, Robert Snow, Jack Nowland, Murtagh Naile, Thomas Kennedy, Dunoghue, James Reilly, James Kenney , Mrs Shrigley, Rev Mr Enraght, Johnny Clery, Geo Dunbar, Lucas Jackson, Frank Thornhill, Robbin Jones, Jemmy Byrne, James Card, Samuel Card, John Hutchinson, Geo Wallace, Mr Nicholas Roche, Rich Brough, John Drumgold and Murtagh Neale (almost certainly a tenant as, in 1757, he paid ?on account of his last Michelmas rent ?61-16 & a half-penny?), Simon Mercer, Billy Lockwood, Stephen Nowlan, George and Lewis Burwell Martin, James Agar, Lemuel Schouldham Esq and Poley Molyneux. I hope this diary can be of help to some people ... needless to say, it was a fantastic find for me. (Thomas was the father of Benjamin Bunbury, the magistrate who made such an impact in Carlow in and around 1798).
