    1. [IRL-CARLOW] 1819 Piece of land in Carlow
    2. michael purcell
    3. 1819. Sworn before Gilbert FitzGerald, Joseph Glinn states that he owns a piece of land in Tomduff these thirty years past and he proffered to let the piece of land to John Clare of Tomduff for the sum of Eleven shillings and four pence halfpenny yearly but this year John Clare did not agree to take the said piece of land or did he give him any title or possession whatsoever. However in the absence of Joseph Glinn from Tomduff John Clare did felloniously Inter said land without consent or knowledge of Joseph Glinn, he has found his piece of land Tilled by John Clare and the ditch leveled and other landmarks removed, and when Joseph Glinn demanded his land from John Clare, he refused giving him his piece of land back but on the Contrary John Clare did forcibly keep possession of said piece of land and told Joseph Glinn that he would do as he pleased with the piece of land and no thanks to Joseph Glinn.

    3. re: can somebody point me to a book/ resource where I can get some true answers. I don't think there is any one book. The more I read about Irish history from a range of different perspectives, the more I realize how nuanced history is and that power unchecked - no matter who wields it - always ends badly. Try reading a mix of history, poetry, fiction, memoirs and then after doing that, squint and look sideways and then you might have it. And if this message gets through (it seems that my email is easily bounced by this list for some arcane technical reason), I have been putting more material up on my site - the most recent concerning JACKSONs and Drogheda. 3. Michael, If you have yesterdays Œdownload¹, you have essentially a backup of the website on your computer. Any New material, added to that backup, needs to be uploaded to the website, then both sites are in Œsync¹. They are mirrors of each other. The next day, add material to your computer¹s site, and upload only what is new or changed. Using Dreamweaver, there are settings when you set up a ŒSite¹ that will automatically upload only changed material. I would be happy to help you get this set up. Other Web Editing programs will probably do the same thing. Another idea is to make Œsub¹ sites within DreamWeaver, that would address the contents of one major sub Folder. 3. I definitely don't want to be the start of any anti-religious tirade on any faith. That's not the purpose of this forum but I think that what we can learn from records like this is that neither religion had any monopoly on power grasping, evil intentions or saintly behaviour. It doesn't seem to me very likely that the workhouse chaplain was on the saintly side. That's all. This is a new notion to me that Carlow did not suffer greatly from the potato famine. Does anyone have any Carlow-specific information about that? >From what I understood the workhouse in Carlow was packed full for some reason. 3. As a child in Philadelphia during the Depression, my mother used to go over to the parish rectory where her grandmother cooked - she would give my Mom bits of extra food and table scraps from the priests so that the family could eat. Feast or famine...the priests didn't go without food or liquor. So much for a vow of poverty... 3. Hi Michael With my own rootsweb site, my publishing program keeps a local copy of the rootsweb site so that I do not have to download it each time. I make my changes whenever I want to on the local copy and when I select update now, it just compares the local image with the rootsweb image and transfers only the files which have changed. Last evening I connected up and updated about 32 pages on my web site in about 4 minutes. Even if your web publisher program won't do that I think there are utility programs which will maintain a local mirror image for you so that updates are done that way. Tom -----Original Message----- From: irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-carlow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Michael Brennan Sent: 01 March 2010 14:02 To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Carlow Website where next? Hi Everyone I am looking for some advice. The Carlow website has got to a stage where its too big to handle as one website. There is more than 2500 pages (not including images) and of course its growing daily. It now takes anything from 10 minutes on a good night to 30 minutes on a bad night, to download from the server so that I can up load new material. I know, that sounds Irish! In order for me to upload new material to the website I have to access the server and wait for all of the files and images to download and then it takes another 10 to 30 minutes to upload the new material. The times do vary depending on the day of the week. Some days the link breaks and you have to go back and start all over again. Have you ever sat in front of your PC and watched files transfer from one location to another? very boring! I am thinking about splitting the website into two different website; one for Records and one for Documents. I want to use Rootsweb (and I know that decision is not going to sit well with everyone) because they are the most reliable and of course its FREE. There are so many different sectors within the Rootsweb organisation http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~websites/international/uk.html I am not sure which one would be the right one to sign up for so I would like to hear for any Carlow List member who has knowledge / experience in this area and can give me advice on where to go next. 3. Hi Michael, I have not been active on the site lately but still monitor the activity via email. I just wanted to thank you so much for all the work and time you devote to the site.  I hope to become more active in the future.  So much more to do! Mahalo nui loa, Gail ----- Original Message ---- From: Michael Brennan <mjbrennan@blueyonder.co.uk> To: irl-carlow@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, March 1, 2010 10:01:53 AM Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Carlow Website where next? 3. Tom, Oopsies, lost the last one.  I remember as a child being told to abstain on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday, and we did as a family and a school. My wife and I still observe the rules, but we are not saints. >From what I have learned, Carlow was not touched by the potato famine as other counties because they grew beets instead of potatoes. I could be wrong about this. I am sure that most priests were pious, and observed the Lenten way. I doubt the workhouse chaplain was a fraud, but he could have been. Okay, first of all I'm Catholic so this isn't prejudice but the notion that a semi-starved person in a workhouse during the height of the potato famine would have to abstain from milk for Good Friday by request of his faith's authority .... damn that's upsetting.  Church Law?  I'll bet the chaplain sat down to a nice meal that evening. 3. many Baptism and Marriage Registers were photocopied in the 1970s by Pat Purcell. Due to storage problems I had to dispose of most of them but some I used as aids in delivering Genealogy courses. I have finished with all that now and have in recent times disposed of the remainder. I suggest you write to the Parish Priest of Rathvilly, he might be able to help.
